Mia
Mum and I moved here from Spain some years back. I had missed some years from school because we were always changing cities. This is where we have stayed the longest, I got to complete high school and even got to have a best friend.
I suppose not all wishes come true. However, one of my greatest wishes was granted. My best friend and I applied to the same college and we were both accepted.
Sophia and I lived on the same street. She is two years younger than I am, but we are so cool that you won't even notice the age difference because she seems to have grown faster than her age.
I started high school late and that is the reason why I'm 22 and just starting college.
Mum insisted we came to Denver when we're we thought of moving again. She insisted Denver had the best schools for me. She said Denver was very populated with so many different individuals and I needed to get exposure and she hoped it changed my fashion sense and manly behaviour.
My behavior wasn't that bad and my fashion sense wasn't that terrible. A few big trousers and loose tops here and there, I only wore tennis shoes. I never wear skirts or gowns or even tight jeans except in a compulsory situation. Many say I'm a tomboy but I don't agree, I'm just different and I like it that way.
Mum was right, this city was occupied by so many individuals and the campus wasn't an exception. Everybody is busy rushing to God knows where.
It's just school, I don't know why they are taking it so seriously.
"Ouch" I winced in pain when someone bumped into me in the hallway while I was struggling to get to my class for the day.
"Watch where you go." The guy said to me rather than apologizing. What a jerk!
"Excuse you, you could at least say sorry. You bumped into me" I roared at him.
"Watch it, babe. You don't want to get on his bad side, he's bad news around here." A girl whispered to me.
If only he knew that I was bad news too where I came from.
"I'm warning you, watch it." He said once more. I decided to just let it slide this time. It's my first day in school and I don't want to be in the bad books just yet. I gathered my stuff from the floor and tried to find my way through the crowd. By the time I got to class, lectures had already started.
I took a seat in the back even though there were many empty seats in the front, I couldn't risk eyes gawking at me while I moved past them to the front seats.
The teacher kept saying things about business this and business that and I couldn't follow her pace. But then she suddenly mentioned something that caught my attention.
She mentioned the Adams Enterprise.
Who hasn't heard about the Adams, they are one of the richest if not the richest family in Colorado as I have heard ever since we got here. They own a very successful business and I have always dreamed of joining their team.
I don't know what the sons look like and it seems most people know them, especially my best friend Sophia who never stops blabbing about one of the brothers.
"He will be here tomorrow for some sort of orientation regarding your field of study. As you all know he was one of the best students we've had here and ever since he took over Adam's enterprise it's been doing well, he is a role model." she praised him.
"He must be the current president of Adam's enterprise" I whispered to myself.
I honestly have no idea what he looks like since I just moved here, but I hear people say he is very handsome and dashing. Sophia once said he looks like an Egyptian god: what a hyperbole and, that he's cold-hearted as ice too.
Don't blame me for not knowing all these things, I'm not a social media fan because there's a lot of faking out there.
Most of the things on social media aren't real. Most of them let us see only what they want us to see but, we just decide to get carried away. Then we feel oppressed, then grieve over meaningless things and the list goes on.
My best friend Sophia and I met up for lunch break at the cafeteria.
"How is your first day" she asked me
"Boring" I dragged on the word to let her know the intensity but she just laughed at me.
We ordered our food and took our seats.
"My teacher said something about one of the Adams coming to give us an orientation tomorrow" I blurted out and Sophia spat out the food in her mouth, some of it touched my left arm.
"Where are your manners girl, easy" I told her
"It must be Logan Adams, oh my God. It must be him" I don't know why Sophia is always so dramatic
"Zip it up, people are beginning to stare" I told her
"I don't care Mia" she whispered to me then she swiped her head to look at the faces staring in her direction in the cafeteria. She mouthed sorry.
"I thought you said you didn't care" I asked her
"Yes, I said that at the moment because I was carried away" she responded and I just sighed.
"Why are you so excited anyways when I heard people whispering in class today? They said he was gay" I told Sophia
"Oh please, those are just rumors and people love saying things to gain attention. He once had a fiancée, so how can he be gay" she asked me
"What if the fiancée thing was all just a camouflage to cover up his real identity, you never know" I questioned again
"Stop saying those things. You are always talking evil, try to look for the good in others even if it's little"
Sophia said to me, it was obvious I made her angry.
"Ok fine I'll stop talking, just please stop acting all dramatic over this Logan of a guy. I'm not even sure he knows of your existence" I told her, causing her to frown even further and I giggled.
We just ate in silence.
"Can I join you for class tomorrow?" she asked me out of the blue
"No Sophia. Why would you want to do that?" I asked her even though I already knew the answer.
"Isn't it obvious enough?. So I can see Logan Adams" she admitted shamelessly
"We don't study the same thing Soph" I tried to remind her
"It's just one day; hours even, not up to a day" she tried to convince me
"Suit yourself" was all I had left to say.
She rolled her eyes at me and continued eating her food.
"Do you know where the Adams mansion is?" Sophia asked me again out of nowhere
"Why do I care?" I replied with another question, it was none of my business.
"You don't want to know huh?" She asked again causing me to laugh
"You seem very eager to tell me" I said
"Yes Besty and I will" she says
"Ok spill it" I urged her
"Cherry Hills Village" she said excitedly
"Oh I see, that's cool" I complimented
I heard Cherry Hills Village is one of the richest residences in Colorado. I know Cherry Hills is an expensive community and has expansive estates, it's no surprise if the Adams live there.
The bell indicated it was broken over, so we both left for our respective lecture rooms.
"Hi I'm Henry, Henry Parker" the guy seated next to me said.
I didn't respond immediately, I took a while to observe him from head to toe. The first two students I spoke to this morning didn't give me the good vibes and I didn't want any trouble with a third student.
"Hi, I'm Mia" I returned the courtesy after I had finished talking to myself in my head.
"Nice to meet you" he said
"Same here" I responded
He looked flushed, was I that charming? or maybe there was something on my face?
"Is there something on my face?" I asked him
"Yes" he said
"What, where is it?" I asked and continued trying to wipe off whatever was there.
"Beauty" he said
"Sorry?" I asked him
"Beauty. You are so beautiful" he said
"Thank you" I was the one who blushed now
"Where are you from?" Henry asked me
"Why?" I asked him
"I can tell you are not from here, you are not purely American" he said to me
"You are right" I confirmed
"So what are you?" he asked me again, making me chuckle at his question
"I'm a Mestizo"I said
"I see" he said
"So which of your parents is American" he asked me
"My mum" I said
"So you are a pure breed then?" I asked Henry with a small chuckle
"Yes" he said
"Well, you're welcome here Mia" Henry said
"Thank you" I said to him for about the fifth time since we started our conversation.
