Logan
"You see, I used to be very good. I was a committed employee and I loved my job so I worked with diligence, concentration, and care. I loved my aunt more, she raised me together with her only daughter when my mother died" he narrated. I mentally asked myself why he was telling me all this.
"I'm not interested in your family life or anything of that sort. Cut to the chase" I said impatiently.
"Trust me, you need to hear this story" he added and smiled.
"My aunt had given up on love, but your father came. My aunt thought Lady Luck had finally decided to smile at her. He made her fall for him and then left her. She couldn't take it. Do you know that she became miserable and tried so many times to take her own life?no, you wouldn't know" he said
"Your aunt should have known that she was falling for a married man" I said in anger
"Shut...up. Your father shouldn't go after other women when he knows he's married and can't marry them" he said to me. This point made sense to me but I don't support anyone. I think my dad and his aunt are both wrong.
"So you came back for revenge, for what my father did to your aunt?" I asked him
"Yes, we planned it all. Selena and I, Selena is my cousin, rings a bell now?" He laughed
Pieces of the puzzle gradually started to fit and my heart sank to my stomach.
"Selena?" I asked in a shocked tone
"Wasn't it enough that she left me at the altar, what more do you want?" I asked him
"Everything, Selena's mother is in a mental home as we speak" he told me. It now makes sense why I never saw her mother, but she said her mother had died.
I'm not surprised because our relationship was all lies anyway.
"You were her target and the company was mine. The information that was leaked during the production of a new product was all my doing. All the missing money you are talking about, it's all me. But all of this is not enough compared to what your father is doing to women" he screamed.
I couldn't restrain myself, I walked over to where he was seated and punched him in the face.
"Is that all you've got?" He asked me.
I threw him to the floor, mounted myself on him, and gave him countless punches till he began bleeding.
"Stop boss, you'll kill him if you continue at this rate" Kevin tried to stop me.
"I didn't offend you, it was my dad so why are all of you after me?" I lamented
He laughed with his burst face.
"You are not innocent, everyone knows what your father does. Everyone knows that Henry Smith Adams is a wicked woman predator and you all know about it so you ought to take the heat as well" he laughed again like he was high on something.
"You are lying, you and Selena are not related" I finally said
He just continued to laugh.
"You can call her right now if you want, go on call her" he mocked me
"Kevin, call the black guys"I ordered.
"Boss, maybe he's telling the truth" Kevin said
"There's no way on earth he's telling the truth, call them now" I insisted
Kevin stepped aside from us to make a call.
"You are going to tell me who sent you, you get me?" I held his chin up with my right hand and said.
"There's no one, I work for no one. You just can't accept it because you think Selena hurt you again. If it's any consolation, after breaking your heart and leaving you at the alter she wanted us to quit but I couldn't. She got satisfaction, I needed to get mine" he smiled in my face.
"Well I hope you have" I said before quickly sending a text on my phone.
Four men in black entered my office and carried him away.
"Where are you guys taking me to? hey get your hands off me" he struggled against their grip but to no avail.
"Bring out every bit of truth in him, I don't believe what he says" I ordered them.
"Yes sir" one of them answered before they all left my office.
"Cancel all my remaining appointments for the day" I told Kevin and left my office.
My vision was blurred for a while, but I had to get a grip on myself. He can't possibly be telling the truth, how much betrayal can a heart that loved truly possibly take, I questioned myself.
The memories all came rushing in like they wanted to consume me and it suddenly felt like it was just yesterday that Selena shattered my heart and I have never moved past it. Everything I didn't want to feel, I'm now feeling them all at once. It just hurts so much.
I made it to my car in one piece without breaking down. I knew where I wanted to be at this moment, I wanted to confront Dad for sure so I drove to the house.
"Logan, son you are here" my mum said as soon as she caught a glimpse of me.
"Where's dad?" I asked her
"Why, what happened? Why are you so tensed?" She asked me
"Mum I need to talk to Dad right now" I simply said
"Your father is not at home" she said
"Damn it" I said with gritted teeth and a clenched fist.
"I'll see you tomorrow mum" I told my mother and was heading to the door almost in the same second I said it.
I needed to vent all these emotions and frustration. I kept driving nonstop. After two hours of driving and banging on the steering wheel, I parked somewhere stepped out of the car, and almost screamed my lungs out.
I felt better coupled with the cool evening breeze that hit me.
"I'm okay, I'm going to be okay" I repeated it five times like it was a mantra.
I got into the car and drove off back in the direction I came from.
I didn't even know where I wanted to be at the moment but I came across a small tavern and decided to stop there for a while.
I packed my car outside and headed directly to the bartender.
"Give me the strongest substance you have" I told the bartender
"Coming right up sir" he replied
A few minutes later, he served me. I didn't bother to check the content before drinking.
"Another glass. Keep refilling till I say otherwise" he commanded
The bartender did as I instructed, from one glass to another. I just kept drinking and it felt really good.
My phone started boozing. I checked to see that it was my younger brother, Lorenzo. I'm sure my mother must have asked him to keep tabs on me.
"Logan, where in God's name are you right now?" he asked me.
"Don't use that time on me. I'm still the eldest" I said
"Mum is worried about you" he tried telling me.
"I'm not a kid, I can take care of myself" I told him
"Why were you looking for Dad earlier today?" he asked me
"It's none of your business" I said
"Where are you right now? I'll come to get you Logan" he said but I didn't respond. I just ended the call and switched off the phone so no one would be able to disturb me.
The tavern suddenly became too loud aside all the music playing in there. I looked around and to my left was a group of youngsters arguing or something.
"You told me it was a boy's night out. What are you doing with her?" I heard a lady shout.
"Oops she caught her man" I whispered to the bartender and he laughed.
A guy walked up to them and told them to stop the ruckus, I believed he was the tavern manager or so.
I just relaxed and kept watching, because the alcohol was spreading and taking full control of my body.
The girl from the site of the commotion walked past me and headed towards the exit. How is it possible she smells so nice despite all the alcohol in here? She smelled like sweets, maybe like lavender and I was enchanted. I followed her without even knowing.
"Don't you know smoking is bad for your health?" I asked her standing a few metres away from her.
"Don't worry I won't die early"she said but didn't bother turning around to look at me.
She was further into the dark while faint colored light from inside fell on me.
I laughed.
"What's so funny?" she asked me
"Just, you are so sure you won't die early. Nothing is certain in life" I told her
"You must have experienced a lot" she added
"Do you want some?" She asked me
"Nope, I quit a long time ago and so should you" I tried advising her
"Oh, so you smoked before" She turned this time to look at me and for some reason, I didn't like the expression on her face.
"You?" She asked like I was some ghost or mafia drug lord. I couldn't see her face clearly, did she know me from somewhere but she was just a kid.
Then she plunged at me and kissed me. I was taken by surprise but I didn't push her away, I kissed her back and it felt so right. Her lips held a faint taste of vodka and cigarettes she just smoked but the blend was delicious and satisfying.
She pulled away from me and lowered her head towards the floor.
"What was that?" I asked her after the kiss trying to catch my breath
"You just smoked again" she smiled and ran into the darkness.
