Dr. Rotten stared at the girl wide-eyed for a while. He found himself doubting whether he had asked the right question... but it was only for a second.
He knew he had; it was the preliminary build-up that he had applied to all the other subjects with success.
So what was wrong with this one?
"Let us repeat that again," he said in that calmly measured voice. "What's your name?"
"Hilsa," the girl answered, barely blinking, which meant the procedure was working just fine.
He reached towards the tablet on his desk and double-checked the details, just to be sure. He frowned.
The name on the record was Katie Frost.
Could it be that his assistant had made a mix-up of the girl's details? This was becoming disruptive.
He didn't have time to comb through the records or interrogate his assistant.
If the subject's thoughts were left to roam without pinpoint guidance, there was a risk that she would snap out of the trance.
