The tension in the air became palpable after Sara confessed her feelings. It was as if time stood still, freezing the moment in place. The silence that followed felt suffocating, and Sara struggled to bear the weight of it.
Jason stood there, seemingly oblivious to Sara's heartfelt declaration, lost in his own thoughts. Unbeknownst to her, his mind was clouded, as if something else had taken control of him. His senses were dulled, and rational thinking seemed almost impossible. Sara's words barely registered with him; all he saw were her lips moving. It was as if a primal force had taken over, with only one concern: the whereabouts of Ella.
Meanwhile, William had been trailing the pair, sensing that something was amiss. He feared that Sara may have harmed Ella, and he knew that Jason, under the influence of his inner wolf, could lash out in a way that would hurt Sara, either physically or emotionally.
As he observed them exchanging words, William's apprehension grew, and he braced himself for the potential consequences of Sara's confession. As he waited for Jason's response, William wasn't prepared for what came next. "Where is the Vam?" Jason asked insistently, seemingly fixated on this mysterious entity.
Sara, taken aback, retorted, "Why are you so obsessed with the Vam? Did you not hear anything I just said? Are you willing to throw away our friendship for someone you've only known for a week? This is exactly why I had to remove her. She must have done something to you, maybe put you under a trance or hypnotized you.
Let's go back; I believe William can help you," she spoke carefully, reaching out to touch Jason's face.
However, Jason's reaction caught everyone off guard. In a swift motion, he seized Sara's hand mid-air, gripping it with such force that she let out a sudden yelp. This left William with no choice but to intervene.
Jason's icy touch sent shivers down Sara's spine, his hands seemingly as cold as ice, embodying the sudden chill that had overtaken his heart. Emerging from the shadows, William's voice pierced through the tense atmosphere as he demanded, "Let her go!"
Sara, trembling with fear, found herself utterly terrified by Jason's sudden transformation. The man she once knew seemed to have disappeared, replaced by a terrifying figure. Despite her pain, she mustered the strength to speak through her anguish, "Jason! You promised you'd never hurt me. I stood by you day and night, loving you with all my heart. Is this the only thing I get in return for my love?"
For a fleeting moment, her words seemed to penetrate Jason's consciousness, prompting him to release Sara and retreat. It was as if a glimmer of humanity had resurfaced within him, as he began to comprehend the truth. However, in the blink of an eye, the beast within him reasserted control, leading him to make a devastating accusation. "You killed her because of your stupid jealousy!" he declared, delivering a blow that cut deeper than any physical wound.
As William sensed the escalating danger, he hurried closer to the unfolding scene and urged Sara, "Sara, tell him where the body of the Vam is." Despite her shattered state, Sara turned her head and gazed at the pit, conveying everything that needed to be known. Without hesitation, Jason advanced and leaped into the pit, leaving Sara to collapse to her knees in despair.
"Why is he behaving like this?" she asked, desperately seeking an explanation from William. "I think you just killed the One," he replied, his words causing Sara's eyes to widen in shock as the gravity of the situation sank in.
William, sensing the escalating danger, rushed closer to them and urgently said, "Sara, tell him where the body of the Vam is." Despite feeling broken, Sara turned her head and gazed at the pit, silently conveying all that needed to be known.
Without hesitation, Jason walked forward and leaped into the pit, leaving Sara to fall to her knees in despair.
"Why is he behaving like this?" she asked, desperately seeking an explanation from William. "I think you just killed the One," he replied, his words causing Sara's eyes to widen in shock as the gravity of the situation sank in.
It had been precisely 30 agonizing minutes since Jason impulsively leaped into Pit Zero. Sara and William anxiously waited for him to emerge. Amidst their apprehension, they discussed the perplexing revelation.
William told her, "How... I mean, it's not supposed to happen. When did Vams become eligible, even worthy of being a wolf's One? It's naturally wrong, totally abnormal, and simply madness."
"I can't believe it myself, but it looks like Jason was never like us," William said. Sara introduced a new twist to the whole situation with her next question, "What do you think he will do to me once he comes out?" "He won't hurt you, I will ensure that," William reassured her. However, Sara found no comfort in his words.
It was evident that even though William was more experienced and skilled than Jason, the beast within Jason was on a whole different level.
Apart from daylight transformations, Jason's healing was god-like, his strength unmatched, and his rage-filled attacks could easily overpower William at any time. Of course, when William said he would ensure that, he never envisioned a confrontation.
William expressed his intention to try and reason with Jason, reminding him of the oath he had sworn to protect Sara, and hoping that Jason would listen to him.
"He hates me more than anything right now," Sara said, her eyes welling up with tears. Attempting to comfort her, William explained, "Listen, the Jason you just spoke to is not the rational guy you know. It's his beast in control, and we all know that when the beast takes over, a wolf's humanity is turned off. If she's truly dead, Jason might be hurt, but knowing how strong he is, he will get over it." Sara gazed directly into his eyes. His unwavering assurance provided her with a glimmer of comfort, and she hoped that his words would indeed prove to be true.
After what felt like an eternity, they heard a sound emanating from the pit. Simultaneously, the sandy ground near them began to bulge, and then Jason emerged from it. However, to their astonishment, he came out empty-handed, which was indeed strange.
It became evident to both William and Sara that Jason would never cease searching until he found what he was after. "She isn't there," he shouted, surprising both William and Sara. "What, I... I swear, I saw her fall into the Pit," Sara exclaimed. "I'm tired of this. Tell me what you did to her!" Jason was about to approach them, but William stood up and addressed him, "Jason, listen to me. Why would she lie to you? You've known her since childhood.". "I have nothing left,"
Jason broke down and said.
"You still have an army to lead?" William reminded him.
"Yeah, tell them I'm never coming back!" Jason concluded, turning and starting to walk away, William chased after Jason after seeing Sara crying, feeling a sense of unease at the sight. "It's okay, he will come back when he gets over it," William assured Sara.
William returned and he was now holding Jason's horse by its reins. There was writing on its side, seemingly carved by Jason with his bare claws.
Once Sara saw the writings she no longer believed what William said to her.
She observed the seriousness and coldness with which Jason spoke.
They returned to the camp, where the wolves were waiting for them. The wolves bombarded them with questions. When Glover asked about Jason,
Sara gave him a straightforward answer to his liking, "Forget him, he's never coming back."
