Chapter 4 - The Fifth Mission (3)

Aaron had to walk for a full day and night before he could find the nearest town. The path had been a bit tiresome since he wanted to run, and those weird bear-like monsters got on his path pretty often, but at least they worked to increase his army further and make him stronger.

As Aaron approached the town, he couldn't help but notice the towering walls that enclosed it. The walls were made of stone and seemed impenetrable. As he got closer, he saw that the town was surrounded by vast fields of grains stretching as far as the eye could see.

The fields were filled with golden stalks of wheat, dancing gently in the breeze. Aaron could hear the moving of the grains as the wind blew through them. The area itself was bustling with people coming and going. It was clear that the people here depended heavily on the surrounding fields for their livelihood. The air was filled with the sweet scent of freshly harvested grains, and Aaron couldn't help but feel a sense of peace at the beauty and abundance of this place.

"I want to make things work out this time… I need to use my previous experiences to not fail," Aaron thought as he walked in.

Aaron left his skeletons behind since he only wanted to gather information. He didn't have to fight now. Still, he couldn't help but feel that there was something weird in the air. At the same time, he looked like a random traveler; the people working in the fields looked at him with eyes filled with suspicion.

Some guards armed with spears were also walking around, keeping their eyes on him. They didn't do anything, but it was obvious that they would do it if they had enough reason to do so.

Eventually, Aaron reached the gate of the city, and he felt even more eyes on him. He wasn't different at all from the people there, and he wasn't acting in a weird way, so their suspicions seemed a bit… suspicious.

The houses and buildings around didn't seem that much special. They were mainly made of stones. Still, Aaron knew that there were no mountains in the area. Kilometers and kilometers of fields were surrounding the place, so they found other means to get those materials.

"I suppose the bow is making me stand out… There are some people with weapons aside from the guards, but they probably live here and are well known, unlike me," Aaron thought while looking around.

Aaron had planned to hear a few things to get information, but everyone was silently looking at him. He couldn't buy anything to make them relax more since he didn't have money either. It was also unlikely that anyone would sell anything to him at that rate.

"If I can't just ask anything, I suppose I can just follow the big wagons and carriages leaving the city," Aaron thought. "Still, while this place looks peaceful enough, the people sure are wary of outsiders… are they worried about spies?"

Aaron needed more information to come up with something more conclusive and detailed regarding that. While he found some places like shops, inns, taverns, and libraries, Aaron didn't have the chance to visit them or relax even a little bit. He soon found a large group of wagons leaving the city together, and apparently, they were being guarded by a bunch of guards on horses.

"This will do," Aaron thought. "The skeletons will only be able to follow me later at night, but it can't be helped in this situation."

It was noon, and while he would stand out even more, Aaron didn't want to waste time. When he receives his missions, usually, it is only a matter of time before things get dangerous, and he doesn't take failure lightly.

The group of wagons and the guards left the city first and soon began to open a large distance between them and Aaron. He just walked and kept doing so even after he crossed the northern gate of the city. He could only speed up once the people of the city could no longer see him, but he did well following the wheel marks on the road alongside the horses' footprints.

Aaron increased his speed when he had the chance, just enough to keep the same pace as the horses' gait while pulling the wagons. Thanks to that, he was able to keep the same rhythm during the whole afternoon. When it was sunset, he found some lights in the distance and confirmed that the group stopped there.

"I am pretty deep in their territory to find villages and towns now… considering the size of that town and how developed it was, I guess that this country probably has the same proportions as France in the fifteenth century," Aaron thought while looking for a place to camp.

The area had some undulation around, so Aaron soon found a tree in one of the tallest areas. He had a clear view of the surroundings. Even amidst the darkness of the night, he would be able to notice anything and everything approaching. He thought that the first thing he would see was his skeletons approaching in a couple of hours, but instead of that, he found some heavy cavalry marching toward him…
