Thane looked over to see who had managed to draw Snape's ire within the first few minutes of the class only to see the boy with the lightning bolt shaped scar staring back at Snape definitely, "No Professor I was just answering Ron's question."

Harry explained as he gestured to the ginger headed boy seated next to him. Snape's eyes narrowed clearly not buying the poor excuse, "Well then Potter I have a question of my own, please tell me the difference between monkshood and wolfsbane?"

Harry fell silent clearly not knowing the answer, but another hand shot into the air almost immediately and Thane looked over to see it was Hermione who was practically on the edge of her seat hoping to be called on.

Seeing Hermione vibrating in her seat Harry grinned, "I don't know but I think Hermione might have a clue. Why don't you ask her?"

A small bout of laughter emerged from the Gryffindor students which was quickly silenced by a glare from Snape, "For a clear lack of respect five points will be deducted from Gryffindor and any further remarks will be punished even more severely."

This time it was Slytherin's turn to laugh which also received a look from Snape in response though it was considerably less hostile, "Now can anyone tell me the correct answer to my initial question?"

At first no one raised their hand besides Hermione who had never lowered hers, despite this Snape was reluctant to call on her and was about to move on when a lone hand at the front of the classroom rose steadily into the air.

Turning around Snape fixed his gaze on a Slytherin boy with curly brown hair pulled back into a bun with a slightly aloof air about him and an intricate tome closed on the table in front of him, "You, what is your name?"

"Thane Carter, Professor," Thane answered confidently, "And to answer your question, there is no difference between wolfsbane and monkshood. Both are aliases for the same plant called Aconite which is a mundane plant that is toxic to the touch. Most commonly used in the Wolfsbane Potion but also a key ingredient in the Wideye Potion. Which is an antidote for the Draught of Living Death."

The class fell into a deafening silence as Snape regarded Thane with an evaluating gaze, "Correct you are Mr. Carter, but can you tell me the recipe for Wideye Potion?"

"Six snake fangs, four measures of standard ingredient, six dried billywig stings and two sprigs of Aconite." Thane responded smoothly without a single stutter drawing another round of mystified stares.

A small smile spread across Snape's lips, "Correct again Mr. Carter, twenty points to Slytherin for such a well articulated and knowledgeable response. Now without any more delays we will begin today's lesson."

Thane turned to face the front of the class as Snape pointed his wand at the chalkboard causing words to appear out of thin air. Though he didn't miss the glares sent his way from Gryffindor and Slytherin. But for once Thane found he didn't need to suppress any feelings of embarrassment or shame and with a slight grin he raised his chin in the face of the spite sent his way.

"Today we will cover the basics of brewing including the technical terms and instruments used so you may correctly interpret any recipe you may lay eyes on."

"Class is dismissed for the day, I will see you again first period on Wednesday with your report on the twelve uses of dragon's blood."

Gathering his Grimoire, Thane stood from his desk and made his way to the door only to be stopped as Hermione practically appeared out of thin air to block him, "How did you know about the recipe for the Wideye Potion?"

Thane stared at Hermione for a moment not expecting such a demanding question, "I read about it in the textbook."

Heromine rolled her eyes, "I know that, but I checked and it's not listed under the first year or second year curriculum. You expect me to believe you're already reading Third Year material?"

"I don't care if you believe me or not," Thane replied as he moved to walk around Hermione, "Just because you can't accomplish something doesn't mean others can not."

Hermione sputtered, clearly taken aback by Thane's demeanor but by the time she formulated a response Thane was already out the door.

Reaching into his robes as he walked up the spiraling staircase outside the potions room Thane looked at his schedule on a piece of paper to find that he and the rest of Slytherin had charms class with Ravenclaw.

Reaching the top of the staircase Thane paused at the top as he frowned, realizing he didn't have the slightest clue where the charms room was. Looking around Thane found that the rest of his house had left him behind and Thane couldn't help but grumble at being stopped by Hermione.

Realizing he was just wasting time Thane broke out into a brisk walk down the hall before he eventually arrived at one of Hogwarts many moving staircases. Taking the steps two at a time Thane rushed up the staircase only to freeze as the stone wall next to him shook with the sound of two massive boulders crashing together.

A section of the wall rippled as the stone bricks moved aside to reveal a hidden passageway. Looking around Thane wondered if someone had cast a spell only to find himself alone in the stairway.

Turning to look back at the passage Thane only hesitated for a second before entering the hidden path, if he was going to be late Thane might as well go on a little adventure and make his tardiness worth it.

As soon as he entered the passage the wall closed behind Thane casting him into complete darkness. Holding out his hand Thane conjured a small orb of light that moved to hover in front of him illuminating the passage and the only way forward.
