Chapter 39 - Chapter 39:Popularity knocks at the door

The morning rays begin to burst over the horizon, painting the earth a soft orange color and marking the re-emergence of the sun upon this land. As a backlash this is accompanied by the retreat of the moon, the rise in temperature and the awakening of the villagers, although some people were already awake.

"Advance soldiers!"

*Relincho* *Relincho* *Relincho*.

With the sound of the reins hitting the horse, their hooves stomping on the hard ground and shouts of command coming from a man dressed as a samurai. About twenty people mounted on horseback, well equipped for this time and with a clear military formation entered the village at full speed.

"Where is Lord Asahiko and his companion!"

Stopping his advancing horse at full speed, the samurai grabs one of the villagers by his clothes before lifting him up easily and threatens him with his sword as he speaks.

"I. Me. Over there in that house."

Going white as a sheet at first, while also sweat drips all over his face. He thinks about it for a few moments, but as he sees the other soldiers withdraw their swords from their scabbards he points in a particular direction before speaking.

"Next time there will be no mercy. You five go behind, four others at the ends and the rest with me. We're going to make a strong impression."

Tossing the villager aside as if he were trash not worth his time. He starts giving orders towards his troops, which completely surround a rather small and simple wooden house.

Christopher/Asahiko pov.

"Ha... Nothing better than when work comes right to your door and you don't have to go looking for it."

Peering through a small hole in the sliding door, he watched as a good number of troops on horseback slowly surrounded the entire house. I could go out and brainwash them with charm to find out what they are planning, but a slight strange odor wafting from their body stops my action. Although after analyzing them in more detail I can tell they are completely human.

"What 's going on?"

"Welcome to reality, now about the situation... Well, I have no idea. Though it looks like we're about to find out."

Ignoring the monotone voice behind me that obviously came from Kikyo, I pushed my palm against the door and spun on my heel, facing her before greeting her with a few words, then getting into the business about what's going on until something interrupts us.

*knock* *knock* *knock* *knock*.

"Mr. Asahiko. Please respond."

"Coming."

Signaling with her eyes for Kikyo to take a seat at a table the house had, she arranged my attire and hair before opening the door with a good-natured smile on my face. The man on the other side was a full-fledged samurai, being quite tall and stocky, added to the full armor he wears makes him look like a full warrior.

"I passed, though you must excuse us for not having anything to entertain you with. On the other hand, that will help us get into the subject at hand more quickly."

"I couldn't ask for anything more."

Hearing his words, I moved away from the door before sitting to the right of Kikyo and I start to wait until the samurai sat down in front of us. We look at each other's faces for a few seconds, almost as if we were analyzing each other, though it must all be over and letting out a sigh he begins to speak.

"Excuse the scrutinizing look, I was only trying to observe if you fit within the testimonials given by others. But that golden hair color and the beauty of your companion have convinced me."

Concluding his words and taking his helmet before placing it on the table, so that he can properly see her face. His whole body straightens up like a spear, to then place a most serious look on his face and begins to speak.

"My... our lord has acquired a strange illness. We have called doctors, monks and priestesses from all possible places, but none could determine what is the cause of such a situation."

His face darkened completely as he spoke about that incurable disease, even his impassive face shows small cracks of pain, though he continues with his story.

"Just when we were ready to accept it... we heard rumors about a powerful Onmyōji and his companion, who is a great healer."

I understand that they have come specifically for Kikyo, though I have certainly managed to observe how she treats the injured before or after completing the assignment... Will she be able to treat an illness?

"Please, I beg of you! He is a good lord and even if you cannot find a solution to the problem... We will simply accept it!"

Listening to the end of her words and considering the situation, I turn my face towards Kikyo due to the fact that they require her abilities, not mine, then she decides what happens next.
