MY UNUSUAL ROMANCE
Chapter 1
Eileen felt bored while listening to her class. She placed her hand below her chin, where it holds the weight of her head. She isn't the type of person who takes her classes seriously. Her best friend, Olivia, is a smart and responsible student, unlike her. Although many said that Eileen and Olivia are opposite to each other like sun and moon, they surprisingly get along.
Even when they were young, they've been together ever since. Eileen has always been delightful to be friends with her. Well, her personality may contradict hers, Eileen doesn't really mind.
She sighed tediously while watching her teacher rambling confusing words that escaped from Eileen's ears. She can't bear it anymore. She just can't wait for the bell to ring.
When she turned her head slightly at her right, she caught a glimpse of the guy sitting just a distance away from her. Sean, the guy she has been crushing on, looks so dashing today as always! His round, hazel eyes sparkle against the sun. That dazzling copper hair that compliments his milky white skin. His smile has always been charming and lively. Even when he's listening to our teacher's lesson earnestly, this just adds to his charm and appeal! Truly deserving of his title "One of the Ikemen guys"!
Before Eileen got stuck on her daydream, a stern yet gentle voice called out to her. "Eileen."
She snapped out of it then turned her head to her left. A girl with silky black hair looked at her with a straight face. This girl is none other than Olivia. She had a cool and reserved demeanour, but despite her distant and reserved nature, there was a profound beauty that was impossible to ignore. Her fair skin glowed like porcelain, and her dark hair fell in soft waves past her shoulders.
"Focus on class. The teacher is discussing." When she spoke, her voice was low and calm. It's stern yet gentle. Eileen might be wrong, but perhaps she's only gentle towards her.
"I can't help it. Sean is just too charming!" She whispered to Olivia.
"Still, you have to pay attention to class." Olivia replied.
She's always been like this, so serious when it comes to classes. Eileen's family have always been fussing her that she should imitate Olivia's ways such as focusing on her classes, studying her notes, and listening to the teacher's discussions. However, whenever they scold Eileen, it just passes through her ear and eventually gets carried away by the wind. This greatly concerns her family.
Fortunately, Olivia keeps her on the right track. She would lend her help to her dear witless friend. The witless friend looked at her with gratitude and appreciation. Although she's strict and stern, she's always been lenient and patient towards Eileen. Perhaps she should show her gratitude by treating her to a meal.
The class has ended and it is now time for lunch. Eileen took out her lunchbox and placed it on her table. Olivia also does the same. When they started eating, her eyes followed the dreamy guy, Sean, as he stood up from his seat and walked away from the classroom.
"Liv!! Did you see how majestic Sean is???" Eileen squealed.
"Mhm." said Olivia.
"Ahh.. How I wish that Sean will notice me.."
"Mhm."
"Don't get me wrong, I don't mind watching him from afar, but can you imagine? Sean talking to me?" She said while giggling.
"Mhm."
"You only keep saying 'Mhm'!" she glared at her best friend. "Are there any other comments you can share??." she added.
"...Mm." Olivia didn't respond any further and took a bite of her meal.
Eileen sighed dejectedly and stared at Olivia for who knows how long. It would be great if this best friend of hers at least give her a meaningful reply, just a few words of encouragement, rebuttal, acknowledgement, retortion, anything!
Yet, the only reply she received is a simple 'Mhm'.
It's not that Eileen is making a big deal out of it, nevertheless she's just concerned about her best friend's social life. She rarely talks to people and thinks about nothing but her studies. Since Eileen seldom studies, perhaps she just doesn't understand the value of it. In Olivia's case, she seals herself away from the people, ignorant of the ways of the world. It's like… being imprisoned in your own little world. Just you and yourself. How miserable can that be? Eileen just won't allow it!
After all, she's her best friend. Her companion. How could she bear seeing Olivia alone in the future?? Eileen must do something about this, even if she would go snooping around Olivia's private matters.
"Eileen, what's the matter?" Olivia's voice surged through Eileen's ears. She looked at Eileen dubiously. Ah, Olivia must've seen her facial expressions when she formulated her plan to bring Eileen's aloof best friend out of her sheltered life and make her shine out there.
Eileen perked up from her seat and suggested. "Why don't we have a walk around the school after we eat? I'm sure you'd like to see some scenery."
"I can't. Mr. Borjah asked me to help him in the faculty." Olivia said nonchalantly.
Eileen was stunned. "What?? But, we spend the majority of our time during lunch break together!" True, Eileen and Olivia are like two halves of the same whole. They're almost always together. If they want the company of the other, they would just call each other and ask to meet up. Every lunch break, even if they're doing nothing, they would spend it together side by side.
That's why Eileen was dumbfounded.
"I'm sorry. I'll make it up to you later." Olivia said in a soft yet stoney voice.
Ah, this won't do… Eileen never really wants to be alone. She always finds her other half if she doesn't want to be lonely. Although she doesn't want to admit it, her mood will be in a state of grief, solemnity, and sorrow if Olivia wasn't by her side. "Don't worry! I'll accompany you. I'm sure Mr. Borjah doesn't mind." she suggested.
"You sure? You'll get bored." Olivia said.
"Nothing will make me bored! Now, when are you going to the faculty? Shall we go right away? So we can finish early." Eileen said.
Olivia looks at her, skeptical. "...If you say so. Let's go." With that, she went out of the classroom and proceeded to go to the faculty. Of course, Eileen willingly followed.
On that day, Eileen wished that either Mr. Borjah shouldn't have asked Olivia for help or she shouldn't have volunteered to help Olivia at all. It's the first time in her life that she spends her lunch break doing the most boring task of all time!
