About a week into living with the miner's family, Sylas decided to name them all. When she noticed the miner started sleeping on the floor in front of the bed using the blanket he had in the cave to make for more room on the bed; she knew at that moment she needed to name them. The miner is now Guy. The smaller boy, Mario. The larger boy, Luigi. The wife is now Rose, she got that name due to the increase of roses being planted around the house. She loved roses. The rest were named after characters from games Sylas enjoyed throughout her life as a man.
Sylas never had a pet. "You're too young to own one." His father would tell him when he was 17 and any other time he asked in his life. His mother would tell him stories about how terrible of a pet owner his father was. "He had to flush so many fishes down the toilet." She would laugh about it. Afterwards, she apologized for laughing over the loss of life.
Pet names and giving people names has never really been Sylas's thing. He gave Valentina a pet name once. He used it once.
"Hey Val!" Sylas said at the start of a tutoring session. Valentina was arriving with her boyfriend. They were the last to arrive for the day, and everyone was already starting on their homework.
"Hey-"
"Val?" Mark interrupted Valentina. "She doesn't know you like that."
Everyone laughed. Sylas clenched his fist and raised the corner of his upper lip. He hid his face for most of the tutor session.
Now, 2 months after the reincarnation of Sylas as the Unnamed Terror of Dracaelfia, she awakes in the morning to a screech. Around the same time as the screech Sylas heard the howling of the wolf that shook the world. The moonlight peered through the window in the kitchen. Mario and Luigi were jolted awake by the noise as well. Sylas leaped out of bed and ran to the door, stumbling a bit. In those 2 months she grew to 5 feet, for the past 2 weeks her growth has steadily been occurring.
She opened the door and started a sprint to the barn. Around the time of her growth slowing down, her senses gradually became better. The taste of Rose's stew had become much sharper, she could tell every ingredient used without actually watching her cook. She heard the echoes of the screech as she ran out of the door. She felt sweat on the door. The farm was vaguely illuminated by the moon, but she could see the outline of the barn. As she sprinted closer to it, she smelled blood.
Of the 7 animals living on the farm, excluding chickens, 6 of them resided in the barn. Two were seen as the most violent, the pigs. The last 4 were pairs of cows and goats. In the 2 months Sylas stayed on the farm, the pigs were always handled by Guy. The boys were in charge of the goats and Sylas was in charge of the cows with Rose. Each animal pair had a pen within the barn. From the entrance on the left side were the cows, next to them the goats. Across from the goats was a pen for the horse, the 7th animal. Next to the horse's pen and across the cow's pen were the pigs.
When Sylas got to the barn, Rose stood in front of the cow's pen shaking. The animals were going wild. The pigs oinked, the goats bleated, and a singular cow mooed with sorrow. The other cow, the bull, was bleeding out of its neck. It laid on its side. Rose said something to Sylas, but the message was lost. Sylas walked up to the bull and stared at it for a moment before crouching down and looking at its wound. It was stabbed at its neck.
A small puncture wound, she deduced. Blood was pouring out of it slowly. Sylas deduced that the wound must have been deep, but it managed to not hit any major veins or vital arteries as the bull had yet to die. Its eyes were slightly opened, and it moaned. Sylas got up and walked to the front of the pen. There was no sign of forced entry. The gate to the pen was wide open. She checked the other pens. The pigs were the first suspect as they were the most violent and had tusks that were frequently used to attack Guy. However none of the pigs had blood on any of their tusks.
"Perhaps they washed it or licked it away? Either way there is no sign of them breaking out of their pens. Neither are there signs of the bull's pen being broken into. Perhaps they jumped? I shouldn't underestimate a pig."
Sylas walked over to the goat's pen.
"They are no good either. The gate is secured and their horns grow towards the back of their bodies. It's more likely for me to stab the bull with my horns than the goats." Sylas's horns had grown a few inches and her chipped horn repaired itself.
Sylas walked back to the bull's pen. Rose had been standing there thinking the entire time. She had a brown coat on with boots that matched. The nights were getting longer, and it was cold. Sylas was still in her maroon dress, she was barefoot. She put her hand to her chin, "Who did this? We don't have a lot of animals to begin with, not to mention the work is super grueling. Sure this means less work for us, but that also means less money. The dragonborn already took so much. Guy is always leaving somewhere with his horse and never returns with more money or even supplies. I don't even think he's been mining lately either. Where is his pickaxe? I never saw it past the first day. Where is he right now?"
Darkness fell over the land. NEIGH! Sylas looked to the entrance of the barn, where she heard the galloping of the horse. Guy stood at the entrance with his head down. As light returned to the land and warmth touched the cold ground, Guy entered into the barn.
Guy had cut off his beard, he wore a stained white tunic and brown pants with his black coat unbuttoned. His eyes were heavy. He reeked of alcohol with a tinge of lavender. He walked up to Sylas, she looked up at him. His brow curved towards the bridge of his nose, veins popped out of his forehead as his frown made him look 10 years older.
Sylas took a step back. Rose yelled something to Guy, Guy didn't respond. He looked at the bull and sighed. "A sigh?" He handed Sylas a knife, grunted and pointed at the bull.
Sylas examined the knife, it wasn't shaped in the way that it would produce the puncture mark on the bull. "Wait, he wants me to kill it?" An image of Sylas in her previous life being stabbed by April's boyfriend flashed in her mind.
Sylas trembled, she slowly walked over to the bull, her calves throbbing. She fell to her knees. She swung the knife well above her head, her horns penetrating the inner part of her elbows. Rose yelled something at Guy, he did not respond. Sylas looked back. "Chk'ulehy!" She snapped back at Guy's bark. She stared at the bull's eye. Her mouth was dry. Her breathing got heavier as she closed her eyes.
"I wonder if you have any last words Mr. Bull? I was thinking of a name for you. Odin or Moodin. I was trying to give you a unique one since everyone else-" Sylas gulped. She could feel a light breeze run past her. "This is so wrong. Why is Guy making me do this? What was that face he made? You know Moodin, I can't understand them anymore than I can understand you. What are their grunts and words, but moos and oinks to me? And I have the audacity to give any of you guys names. I don't know you all like that."
"Chk'ulehy!" Guy screamed again.
Sylas jumped. She opened her eyes. She swung the knife into the bull's eye. Closed them. Brought the knife back. She swung again, blindly, around the same area. She opened her eyes to see the knife in the forehead of the bull. Its other eye rolled back as Sylas got up. She backpedaled into Rose who hugged her. Rose once again yelled at Guy, he did not respond. Almost like a zombie, he dragged himself to the bull, pulled out the knife, then cleaned the blood off of its blade.
"Don't worry Odin. I'll find the one who did that to you." Sylas said with a frown.
Guy grabbed Sylas's arm. Rose tried to drag Sylas away from Guy, but he pushed her arms away and pulled Sylas. Sylas screamed, "Hey!" His grip was tight. Sylas gave up trying to fight back. She walked with Guy who placed her on the horse. He went back to the barn and talked to Rose, who talked back to him. As they had a conversation, Sylas's mind was running.
