Chapter 23 - Kayden: As Long As I Don't Laugh, They Will Be The Joke

Hearing Winston call Kayden as 'browney', Shiro Ayame held back her laughter but failed at it, "Pftt!"

"Hahaha! The nickname Winston gave you sounds like that of a dog!"

However, in response to Ayame's mockery, Kayden's face remained calm as he thought to himself, 'As long I don't laugh, they will be the joke.'

Ignoring Ayame's mockery, Kayden started driving the car under Winston's instructions.

Kayden didn't even bother to correct Winston since he knew it was futile. As much as he hated to say this, the strongest amongst them was Winston due to Winston having two pistols as well as superb marksmanship.

He knew that even if he had the same two pistols as Winston, he wouldn't be as good as Winston in terms of using them.

If not for his space storage bracelet, he would believe that he's dragging the team down.

Driving the car in the streets, Kayden would often evade zombies in his path. Furthermore, he also ignored any survivors who were calling for help since he didn't want any useless teammates.

Even Kayden didn't want himself to be useless, so why would he allow others who were even more useless than him to join and bring down their team?

If he wasn't worthy to join Winston and Ayame's team, Kayden would have gone solo since he didn't want to take advantage of them.

Noticing that Kayden didn't pay any heed to those survivors calling for help in the streets, Winston nodded in approval, "In the zombie apocalypse, you can only help those who have value and are also trustworthy."

"The food we currently have would only last for six months so adding more deadweights in our group is counterproductive to our survival. Especially you two since you are players and if you die, you die in the real world."

"Us NPCs can still be rebooted after the game is completed so our lives aren't that important. However, the game reboot will also erase our memories and that might still be considered as death. But we don't have much of a choice unless Aspro allows us to keep our memories."

"Even if we NPCs survive the zombie apocalypse, our memories would still be erased as long as the game is completed."

Hearing Winston's explanation, Kayden was confused, "I thought you were a player. A special event NPC had told me that only special event NPCs can know of their existence as an NPC."

"On the other hand, the average NPCs wouldn't have any memories of their existence as an NPC. I assumed you are a player since you have E-grade special event items. A special event NPC told me that other NPCs wouldn't be able to find them, let alone obtain their special event items."

In response to Kayden's doubts, Winston answered, "There are a few NPCs in this game who are an exception to that. Even if they aren't special event NPCs, the game developer had allowed them to know of their existence as NPCs just to increase the difficulty of the game."

"Of course, you can also approach those types of NPCs such as myself to form an alliance with each other. Like you, even us NPCs don't want to die. So if the players are capable enough, we NPCs will also form an alliance with you."

"Also, not all special event items are obtained from special event NPCs. My gun evolved into a special event item due to the influence of the zombie virus."

"Some normal items in this game are evolved by the zombie virus as well as due to the law of the world. Not only humans, plants, and animals, but also inanimate objects can evolve due to the zombie virus."

"However, the chances of that happening are very low so don't expect too much from it. Just smearing zombie viruses on an item won't make it directly evolve into a special event item. It needs a certain special event for it to evolve into a special event item."

"Even I don't know the full requirements of an item's evolution. But if we are lucky enough, we might be able to find special event items without having to encounter a special event NPC."

Hearing Winston's explanation, Kayden and Ayame felt fortunate that they teamed up with Winston.

After all, having an information advantage was very important in a game. Kayden and Ayame knew that only players like them who had such fortuitous encounters would have such an advantage over most players.

Ayame didn't even encounter any special event NPC or obtain any special event items. She knew that if she hadn't met Kayden and Winston, she wouldn't be able to know of its existence.

However, as a top game streamer in Blue Star, it was already within Ayame's expectations for this game to have such features. At most, learning this information from Kayden and Winston only proved her guess.

This time, it was Ayame who asked Winston, "How can we know if an item is a special event item or not?"

In response to Ayame's question, Winston just shrugged, "You mostly won't know. Some special event items like mine are indistinguishable from the original. Only after using these two pistols of mine that I discover that they're stronger than the usual pistol."

Before Ayame could ask another question, Winston ordered Kayden, "Turn left and we'll arrive at my house."
