"I… Yeah, I got...killed by low rank zombies as a 3rd rank hunter."
"It's a shame I can't drink alcohol anymore. I hope I could go back in time and correct all my mistakes."
"Wait, why can I still feel my.....body!?"
There was a muffled voice that became more clear as seconds passed by.
"James..... James, you seemed to be lost in your thoughts even at your graduation ceremony, huh?"
"The voice that I had already forgotten because of those rotting bastards who chased me till.....death!?"
"Is this a.....dream?! "
"I guess this is how it feels when people die. Do they remember the moments that mattered the most in their lives when they are on their way to afterlife?."
"Just relax, you little brat." said the voice from earlier.
"Leave him to his own, darling." said a humble yet concerning voice.
"These words.....were the last one that I heard from the both of them. They were my foster parents, Emily Smiths and Johnny Smiths, who raised me like their own."
James opened his eyes to take a look at them, thinking it was a dream. He found himself sitting on a chair waiting for his name to be called upon on the day of his graduation ceremony. Both his parents were looking at him proudly.
"There's no need to worry about it".said his mother, holding his hands gently.
That gentle touch made him remember the most cheerful memories he had before the apocalypse destroyed this happy family.
"Hey son, you a wimp or something!?" said James's father after hearing his mother.
While he was reminiscing all those memories with his mother's, his father's awful memories came along with them. But he was still glad to meet them again.
Before he said anything, his name was called upon the stage. His parents helped him up the stage. James looked at both of them from the stage and remembered right after he receives the degree, a stream of pale yellow light Will appear flowing all over the place and disappear after a few moments.
Everyone was shocked after they saw the light appear and disappear. But they didn't think much about it as if they didn't see it and went on with the flow of ceremony.
James and his parents went home early to prepare for celebration.
They all were silent and no one mentioned that strange phenomenon at the ceremony. Mother went to do the dishes after they had a lavish dinner and father sat down beside his study after telling James, "You should have some rest today, you must be tired."
He had no reason to refuse because he knew it was a dream, and he may not wake up after taking some rest.
He entered his room with a sullen face and stuffs his mouth inside the pillow, saying, "At least I saw them for the last time. Now, please stop this dream." after closing his eyes, trying to sleep.
A strange voice that looked down upon him said, "But, isn't this what you wished for. Humans are really the most unpredictable beings." He was shocked after hearing that voice.
When he opened his eyes, he saw himself in a huge library, where there were millions of books moving on their own. He was already flustered by the voice he heard, and now he was suddenly in a majestic library, he was on the verge of collapsing. Out of curiosity, he asked, "Are you a god?" The strange voice replied, "No, I am The Star Library System, and you are my host. I will help you survive the apocalypse, which you already know about."
Puzzled with the fact that he was in an unknown library, and the most important thing was that it also knew about the emergence of apocalypse.
"Don't dilly-dally, do you, accept me as your aid to survive in this soon to be apocalyptic world?" A transparent blue rectangular structure appeared with the options "YES" and "NO".
At that moment, James realized that he was no longer in a dream, but he travelled back in time when the apocalypse had just begun.
Without thinking any further, his hands reacted before he knew and touched "YES".
A stream of light enveloped his body when he clicked "YES" and he experienced pain as if there were millions of ants biting all over his body. The pain was immense to make him fall unconscious.
When he woke up, he found himself lying on the floor with his T-shirt drenched in sweat. He changed his clothes immediately, but he noticed that he was not tired anymore, and his skin was more whitened than before.
For a moment he didn't believe in what he had experienced, but one thing for sure, he was reborn at the beginning of apocalypse, and he had a chance to turn his fate in a different direction.
"You have successfully achieved the requirements to enter and leave the Star Library at will, Host."
"The library from earlier?"
"YES" replied the system without any delay.
"How do I enter it?"
Before he knew, he was already in the library, sitting at one of the vacant seats of the huge table. "You can enter here any time you want."
Though he understood what it said, but he still had a question, "How will you aid me?"
The system issued a quest the moment he raised his question.
"Hunt down the zombies nearby.
Reward: A Beginner's Lucky Draw. "
He was again in his room lying on the floor when the system quest was issued.
After reading the quest, James was utterly disappointed, as he had already been sick with those quest issuing RPG games in his youth.
He opened the door at 3:00 a.m. and noticed his parents were in their room sleeping peacefully.
"In my past life, the apocalypse started already when our neighbor came at 3:10 a.m. to ask for bandages to cover her hand, mother offered her food and water, but she refused aggressively. She didn't even tell us how she got bit or what bit her, but she was in despair as if she had seen a monster. But this time, I am not going to let her enter and wait until she gets bit."
