Chereads / Reincarnation As Support / Chapter 2 - The Baron Plan

Chapter 2 - The Baron Plan

Oscana Mansion.

Ren, now aware of the potential threats and political intricacies surrounding Oscana, decided to take a proactive approach. If the mayor had the support of the knights and merchants, then he had the support of the people.

The first step he will take is to reduce taxes, the second is to interact with the people and ask about their problem, and the last is security in both cities and villages.

But if he lowered the tax, the Knights would be unhappy with that policy, which is probably why they support the mayor, because they want a high salary.

As for the Merchant's Guild, they want a Major to lead the Oscana so that he can implement policies that benefit the Merchant's Guild.

Ren went to Sir William's office.

Sir William looks up as Ren enters the room, his expression a mix of surprise and relief. "Milord Gareth, I didn't expect to see you so soon. How may I assist you?"

Ren takes a seat, his mind focused on the upcoming challenges. "Sir William, I've decided to take a more hands-on approach to the affairs of Oscana. I need your assistance in implementing a few changes."

Sir William, loyal to his lord, nods. "Of course, Milord. What changes do you have in mind?"

Ren leans forward, outlining his plans. "First and foremost, I want to lower the taxes imposed on the people. It's clear that the arbitrary tax increases were causing unrest, and I believe a fair and reasonable tax policy will not only alleviate the burden on the citizens but also garner their support."

Sir William raises an eyebrow but nods in agreement. "A wise decision, Milord. Lowering taxes will undoubtedly earn the favor of the people."

Ren continues, "Secondly, I want to engage with the people directly. I'll visit the towns and villages within the Barony, listen to their concerns, and assure them that their well-being is my top priority. This will not only strengthen my connection with the people but also help me understand the challenges they face."

Sir William approves of the idea. "An excellent approach, Milord. The people will appreciate your presence and concern for their welfare."

Ren concludes, "Lastly, I need to address the issue of security. I want a thorough review of the current state of our defenses, both in the cities and villages. We need to ensure the safety of our citizens and be prepared for any external threats."

Sir William stands, ready to execute Ren's directives. "Consider it done, Milord. I'll begin the preparations immediately. Is there anything else you would like to discuss?"

Ren shakes his head. "That will be all for now, Sir William. Inform the people of the upcoming changes, and let them know that I am fully committed to the well-being of Oscana."

As Sir William leaves to carry out Ren's instructions, Ren reflects on the challenges ahead. The support of the people is crucial in reclaiming his rightful position, and by addressing their concerns and improving their lives, he aims to weaken the foundation of Mayor Eldric's support.

___

City Hall.

Meanwhile, in City Hall, Mayor Eldric is in a heated discussion with the Knight and the Merchant, devising a counter strategy to maintain control and thwart Ren's efforts to regain power.

Mayor Eldric speaks in an angry tone "Ladies and gentlemen, you already know that that son of a bitch Gareth has regained consciousness, and he immediately called out to me. "

"He intends to lower taxes and interact with the people directly. We cannot allow him to sway the public in his favor. We need a united front to maintain control over Oscana," Mayor Eldric declares, his frustration evident.

The Knight, a stern figure clads in armor, nods in agreement. "Mayor, we have supported you for a reason. If this Gareth aims to disrupt the order we've established, we must act decisively. What's your plan?"

The Merchant, a shrewd individual with a calculating demeanor, adds, "Indeed, Mayor Eldric. We cannot afford to let Oscana slip from our grasp. If lowering taxes is his first move, we need a countermeasure to maintain our influence."

Mayor Eldric leans back in his chair, a malicious glint in his eyes. "We'll start a smear campaign against Gareth. Spread rumors of incompetence, instability, and weakness. We need the people to doubt his ability to lead. Meanwhile, we'll use our influence to ensure that the changes he proposes face resistance. We can't let him gain momentum."

The Merchant made the suggestion, "How can we raise the price of staple foods?"

Mayor Eldric smirks at the Merchant's suggestion. "Excellent idea. If we control the prices of essential goods, we can create dissatisfaction among the people, making them question Gareth's ability to improve their lives."

The Merchant nods in agreement. "I'll use my connections within the Merchant's Guild to manipulate the market. We can gradually raise prices, blaming it on external factors like shortages or increased demand. The people will direct their frustration towards Gareth."

The knight added, "We tell the people that the road from the village to the city is very dangerous, not only bandits but also wolf packs.

Mayor Eldric approves of the knight's suggestion. "Yes, emphasize the dangers of travel. We'll instill fear and insecurity, making Gareth's promise of improved security seem empty. With our combined efforts, we'll create a narrative that undermines his credibility."

The three conspirators continue to discuss and plan their strategy to counter Ren's efforts. Meanwhile, Ren, unaware of the brewing plot against him, focuses on implementing the changes he believes will win the support of the people.

___

Oscana Mansion.

"Sir William, how many soldiers are loyal and have no connection to the Knights?" Ren asked.

Sir William, standing before Ren, takes a moment to consider the question. "Milord, while the majority of our forces have some affiliation with the Knights, there are a few units composed of loyal and independent soldiers. They may not be as numerous, but their loyalty lies directly with Oscana, and they can be trusted to follow your orders without external influence."

Ren nods, contemplating the strategic use of these loyal soldiers. "I need a list of these independent units, their strengths, and their locations. It's crucial that we have a force we can rely on without the interference of external factions."

Sir William bows. "Of course, Milord. I'll gather the information immediately and provide you with a detailed report."

As Sir William leaves to carry out the task, Ren realizes the importance of having a force that is truly loyal to him. The conspiracy against him is becoming more apparent, and having a reliable military presence will be essential in countering any attempts to undermine his authority.

In the meantime, Ren decides to focus on his plans to lower taxes, engage with the people, and address the security concerns within Oscana. He knows that winning the support of both the citizens and the military is key to reclaiming control and thwarting the schemes of Mayor Eldric, the Knight, and the Merchant.

Days pass, and Ren's initiatives begin to take effect. The tax reduction brings relief to the citizens, and Ren's presence in the towns and villages creates a positive buzz. The people appreciate the lord's direct involvement and concern for their well-being.

However, the conspirators are not idle. The Merchant, using his connections, subtly manipulates the prices of essential goods, creating a sense of discontent among the people. The Knight spreads exaggerated tales of dangers on the roads, sowing fear and doubt about Ren's ability to provide security.

Simultaneously, Mayor Eldric orchestrates a smear campaign, painting Ren as an inexperienced and incompetent leader. Rumors circulate, questioning Ren's legitimacy and ability to govern, casting a shadow over his efforts to win the support of the people.

In the bustling market square of Oscana, citizens gather to discuss the recent actions of Baron Gareth. The atmosphere is charged with a mix of curiosity, hope, and a hint of skepticism.

Citizen A: "Did you hear? Baron Gareth lowered the taxes! Maybe things are finally looking up for us."

Citizen B: "Lowered taxes? Is this some kind of trick? I can't believe a noble would willingly give up their gold."

Citizen C: "I saw him in the village last week. He talked to us, asked about our concerns. Seems like he genuinely cares about the people."

Citizen D: "Care? Ha! Don't be fooled. It's probably just a show to cover up his incompetence. The mayor was doing just fine."

Citizen E: "Speaking of the Mayor, did you hear the rumors? They say Baron Gareth is too weak to lead. That he's just a puppet."

Citizen A: "A puppet? Come on! I met him, and he seemed sincere. Maybe the Mayor's just trying to tarnish his image."

Citizen B: "But what about the rising prices in the market? I can barely afford basic goods now. Is this Gareth's doing too?"

Citizen C: "I don't know, but I hope he can fix it. He promised to improve security on the roads too. That would be a relief."

As the citizens exchange opinions and rumors, the diversity of perspectives highlights the complexity of the situation. Some are cautiously optimistic, while others remain skeptical and question Baron Gareth's motives. The market square becomes a melting pot of discussions, reflecting the uncertainty and tension within Oscana.
