Chapter 3 - Secure The Road

Oscana Mansion.

In the dimly lit study of Oscana Mansion, Ren reviews the reports detailing the effects of Mayor Eldric's actions on the barony. The room is filled with a tense energy as he absorbs the information.

"Tsk."

"Lowering taxes was a necessary step, but it seems the mayor is using every trick in the book to undermine my efforts."

Frustration crosses Ren's face as he reads about the manipulated prices of essential goods, the spreading fear of dangers on the roads, and the orchestrated smear campaign.

"These machinations are designed to turn the people against me. But I won't let this stand. The citizens deserve better."

Ren takes a deep breath, contemplating his next moves. The weight of responsibility is evident in his eyes as he considers the challenges posed by Mayor Eldric, the Knight, and the Merchant.

"I must act decisively to counter the mayor's plans. Words alone won't move the people now. Actions will speak louder."

"Sir William gathers our loyal soldiers outside."

Ren stands and heads towards the gathering of loyal soldiers. The courtyard is filled with men and women, soldiers who have proven their loyalty to Oscana and its rightful ruler.

"Milord Gareth," Sir William greets with a nod. "These are the units composed of independent soldiers who remain steadfast in their allegiance to Oscana. They await your orders."

Ren addresses the assembled soldiers, a determined expression on his face. "Soldiers of Oscana, I stand before you not just as your lord but as someone who seeks to lead with honor and integrity. The challenges we face are not just external threats, but internal discord sown by those who would seek to undermine the well-being of our people."

He continues, "I ask for your loyalty, not to me as an individual, but to the ideals and principles that make Oscana a prosperous and just land. We must counteract the false narratives being spread by those who wish to exploit our people and maintain control for their own gain."

The soldiers, recognizing the sincerity in Ren's words, nod in agreement. Ren turns to Sir William. "Organize patrols along the roads to ensure the safety of our citizens. We will prove that their fears are unfounded and that Oscana stands united against any threat."

Sir William salutes. "It shall be done, Milord. Our soldiers are ready to serve."

As the soldiers disperse to carry out their orders, Ren's thoughts turn to the other aspects of the conspiracy. He decides to address the rising prices of essential goods and the smear campaign directly.

Market Square.

Ren, accompanied by a few trusted soldiers, enters the bustling market square. The citizens pause in their activities, casting curious glances toward the Baron who has chosen to walk among them.

Ren raises his hand, signaling for attention. "People of Oscana, I stand before you not as a distant lord but as someone who shares the same streets and breathes the same air. I have heard your concerns, and I am here to address them directly."

He continues, "I am aware of the rising prices of essential goods, and I assure you that it is not my intention to burden you further. Together, we will investigate the root causes of this issue and work towards a fair and just resolution."

Ren turns his attention to the smear campaign. "Rumors have been spread questioning my ability to lead, but actions speak louder than words. I have taken steps to lower taxes, and now I will go to the village to make sure the road between the city and the village is safe, so that the people of the village can sell their products in our city at a reasonable price."

The citizens exchange glances, and some nod in acknowledgment. Ren's direct approach resonates with those who appreciate a leader who listens and takes action. The atmosphere in the market square begins to shift, and murmurs of support ripple through the crowd.

Ren concludes, "Oscana is not just a land ruled by titles and positions; it is a community of people striving for a better future. Let us work together to overcome the challenges we face and build a prosperous and united Barony."

As Ren exits the market square, he knows that the battle for the hearts and minds of the people is far from over. The conspirators will not yield easily, and Ren must navigate the intricate web of politics and deception to reclaim Oscana and ensure a just rule for its citizens.

___

City Hall.

News of Baron Gareth's unexpected appearance in the market square reaches Mayor Eldric in City Hall. A servant rushes in, breathless and anxious, to deliver the report.

Servant bow to mayor and deliver the message: "Milord Mayor Eldric, Baron Gareth has just made an appearance in the market square. He addressed the people directly, speaking of lower taxes and addressing their concerns. The citizens seemed receptive to his words."

Mayor Eldric, seated at his desk, clenches his fists in frustration. The news is not what he wanted to hear, and the situation is quickly slipping out of his control.

Mayor Eldric: "What? He dares to show his face and play the benevolent lord? This changes things. We cannot let him sway the people with his empty promises. We must counteract this immediately."

The Knight and the Merchant, who have been awaiting updates in Mayor Eldric's office, exchange uneasy glances.

Knight: "Milord Mayor, what do you suggest we do? Baron Gareth's direct interaction with the citizens complicates matters."

Merchant: "And his talk of investigating rising prices and ensuring road safety undermines our efforts to control the narrative."

Mayor Eldric takes a moment to compose himself before formulating a response.

"Looks like we'll have to use the option to ally with the bandits."

"What bandits!" both the knight and the merchant were shocked.

Mayor Eldric smirks, revealing a darker side of his intentions. "There are certain elements outside the city that can help us create a scenario that justifies our actions. We'll make it appear as if Baron Gareth's policies are attracting the attention of bandits, creating chaos and endangering the very citizens he claims to protect."

The Knight frowns but sees the tactical advantage in Mayor Eldric's suggestion. "Using bandits to create a threat? It's risky, but if done discreetly, it could shift public opinion in our favor."

The Merchant, although uneasy, chimes in, "It will also distract the people from the rising prices issue and focus their concerns on security. If they believe their safety is at risk, they might turn to us for a solution."

Mayor Eldric nods. "Exactly. We'll use this situation to portray Baron Gareth as unable to maintain order, thereby justifying our continued influence and control. I'll arrange a meeting with the bandits and make a deal to create a sense of urgency."

The Knight raises a skeptical eyebrow. "And what if this plan backfires? If the people discover we orchestrated a threat for our own political gain, it could lead to a rebellion."

Mayor Eldric smirks confidently. "We'll ensure that the bandit attacks are minor and can be easily thwarted. Just enough to sow fear and doubt."

The Merchant still appears uneasy but understands the necessity of maintaining control. "Very well, Mayor Eldric. We'll trust your judgment in handling this situation. But we must tread carefully. If the people sense manipulation, our positions will be at risk."

Mayor Eldric leans back in his chair, a sinister glint in his eyes. "Rest assured, we'll play this carefully. Baron Gareth won't know what hit him."

___

Road.

The sun begins to dip below the horizon as Ren, accompanied by a group of loyal soldiers, sets out to patrol the road that connects the village to the city. The air is crisp, and the fading sunlight casts long shadows on the path ahead.

Ren, dressed in his noble attire with a determined expression, addresses his soldiers. "Our presence here is not just to secure the road but to show the people that Oscana stands united against any threats. We must dispel the fear that has been spread and assure the citizens that their safety is our top priority."

The soldiers, armed and equipped for the patrol, nod in acknowledgment. Sir William, ever loyal to his lord, stands by Ren's side.

"Milord, we have received reports of bandit activity in the area. It seems they've been emboldened by recent rumors and are targeting travelers on this road," one of the soldier's reports.

Ren clenches his jaw, realizing that the conspirators are already moving to execute their plan. "Very well, Sir William. Let's proceed with caution. We will confront these bandits and demonstrate that Oscana will not succumb to threats."

The group continues down the winding road, the quiet of the evening broken only by the rustling of leaves and the soft footfalls of the soldiers. As they approach a wooded area, Ren senses a heightened tension in the air.

"Awoooo" The sound of a pack of wolves howling.

"Wolf Pack!" Ren draws his sword and prepares for battle.
