Chapter 2 - Eleven Year Old Betrayal

***

Mmakwena Nkwana

JOHANNESBURG, SAPS HEADQUARTERS.

One month later…

"Tell me you found their location." I asked.

"It's not showing on the grid, it's like they have completely vanished from the world," the man replied.

"What?" I questioned, half surprised by the revelation on the computer.

"That doesn't make sense, they can't just disappear!" I let out angrily.

I walked out angrily before my phone started ringing, it was Thato.

"Did YOU find them?" I asked.

"She was telling the truth, Mmakwena," Thato responded.

"I know, where are they!?" I screamed over the phone frustrated.

It's been a month... She vanished into thin air. I should have never doubted her. I shouldn't have believed that my best friend was ' just' tired. I should have believed her when she said she saw her. I should have tried harder and not just given up.

"They are in Cape Town." Thato answered after a while before sighing.

"Where in Cape Town?" I asked, anxiously.

He couldn't just tell me that they are in Cape Town and not be specific about it. Cape Town was not a good enough answer for me.

"That's the thing, their location is everywhere in Cape Town." Thato answered.

"Thato, I'm going to need more that." I stated trying my best not to scream at him.

"We can't pinpoint their location because it's everywhere in Cape Town. It's like they are invisible and stuff." He explained.

"Look, I'll try my best but I have to go now." he tells me before hanging up.

"Thalia, where are you?" I whispered, talking to myself.

"Alia? Are you okay?" I asked worriedly.

"Mmakwena, something crazy happened." Thalia said, speaking fast.

"What's wrong?" I asked, confused.

"I saw me," Thalia answered, hugging her knees.

"You saw yourself?" I asked, confused.

"Yes, She said she's been waiting for this for a long time." Thalia answered, frantically looking to her sides.

"She's watching me." Thalia added, crying.

"Alia, were you at this cafe?" I asked her, showing her a video of her at Delight Cafe.

"I didn't do anything Mmakwena." Thalia cried, shaking her head.

"What happened?" I asked, crouching down to her level.

For the last month, that day kept replaying in her head like a cursed record player that just could not be turned off or broken.

"Detective Ank-wana?" a fierce voice called.

"It's Nkwana." I said, turning and staring at the tall man in front of me.

My heart stopped beating for a moment. What was he doing here? He…He…He couldn't be here. I closed my eyes and opened them again.

"I am Detective Thomas Wilson from America." he introduced himself, staring down at me.

I snapped out of my thoughts as I stared at him shocked. Don't lose focus! Ignore him! Ignore him! Ignore him!

"Okay? " I answered confused as to why an American Detective was here.

"We will be taking over this case." he stated when he saw my confused face.

I stared at him for a good minute before I laughed. He was the one who was now staring at me bewildered. He sounds so crazy saying things like that. I looked up at him to see him looking all serious and amused.

"Excuse me, what did you say? " I questioned as I stopped laughing.

I was so flabbergasted by what he had just said that laughing was the only reaction I could give him.

"I hope you do know that this is South Africa, and here you do not have authority. " I reminded him feeling proud that I could use these words on someone.

He stared at me before he laughed at me. I felt like kicking him where the sun never shone. I had to be professional so no kicking even if I knew him. Why was he still a fucking cocky bastard?

"I would not have authority if one of them were not American. " he said, showing me the legal documents.

Snapping out of my thoughts I stared down at the documents before looking back at him. This could not be happening. It couldn't be. I grabbed the documents and walked to my boss's office fuming. I was not and I refuse to work with that douchebag. I knocked before I stormed into his office.

"Sir, what is this?" I asked as I slammed down the documents on his table.

He looked at the paper that I had slammed on his desk. A smile lit up his face as he read the paper.

"Did Detective Thomas Wilson finally arrive?" he asked me.

The excitement in his voice was ticking me off. I wanted to slap him into 2024. How dare he!? He is excited because that bastard is here! He never told me about this arrangement yet his excited!

For an entire God damn month, I have been working alone on this case! ALONE! And he smiles excitedly talking about that bastard!

"You knew?" I asked, stunned.

How could he not tell me such an important thing? Was he crazy? Did he smoke Nyoape or sum?

"I was going to tell you soon." he spoke in a dismissive tone.

"I don't want to work with him." She voiced.

I refuse to work with him, especially after what he did. I would be damned to be working with him. I cannot work with him. I...I cannot!

"Who said I wanted to work with you?" a voice asked from the door.

I turned to see his obnoxious face. He was leaning against the door staring at me.

"If you did not want to work with me, you would not be here." She stated angrily.

"I'm here because it involves an AMERICAN CITIZEN." he raised his voice emphasizing the words American citizen.

I scoffed at him. He was fucking hilarious. He had the audacity to come here and be a pain in the ass to me?

"Well, Detective Nkwana, you and Detective Wilson will be working together." My Boss let out in a dismissive tone.

He leaned close to my ears before he whispered.

"You know, You are not supposed to be on the case since it involves someone close to you. So if you don't want me to take you off this case, You will work with Detective Wilson."

I couldn't believe this! I didn't want this. I didn't want to see him. I didn't ever want to cross paths with him ever again. I promised myself that I would get over him. It's been eleven years and I... I...

04 July 2010

Dear Diary

I am finally leaving…I don't have to remember him or miss him. I am going to forget about a scumbag like you, Thomas Wilson. I will forget you. This is the promise I'm making to myself.

P.S. I'll find someone an infinity times better.

Mmakwena Nkwana <3

I'll do this just once. Just once for her. For my best friend, I'll tolerate him whatever it is.

"So I have to work with you." I let out, frowning.

"No, you're off the case." he said.

"Again, this is not the United States of America. " I remind him rolling my eyes.

Detective Wilson was slowly getting on my nerves. I wanted to kick him even more than before.

I sighed as I stormed out of the office. He followed behind me and I stopped.

"We're going to Cape Town," we both said at the same time.

"I guess I don't have to speed you up to date with the situation." I said walking out of the SAPS Headquarters.

Detective Wilson followed me to my car. I stopped and stared at him.

"And then?" I questioned, shocked by his presence.

"I'm riding with you," he said, getting in the car.

"Where's your car?" I asked annoyed yet shocked.

"Back in the States, get in so we can leave," he said buckling himself.

So much for being a detective from America, I thought. I sighed as I got in the car. I started my car and drove.

Nothing! Absolutely Nothing could have prepared me for this kind of situation. My car broke down before we could even reach the exit. It was so freaking embarrassing for me. I wanted to fall into a deep hole and never get out but I couldn't. Composing myself and ignoring his laughter, I called my car insurance company and waited for them to arrive. They finally arrived and they took my car. We then took an Uber to Park Station, where we bought bus tickets.

"What time will we arrive in Cape Town?" Detective Wilson inquired curiously.

I stared at him and my entire mood became foul. I didn't like the thought of spending twelve hours on a bus with him. Twelve hours seemed like torture to me, I felt as though I would suffocate.

"Twelve hours." I responded.

"What!" he exclaimed, astonished by the revelation.

"Yeah, so sit down because this is going to be a long drive." I said sighing.

"This is one heck of a day." I whispered to myself.
