Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: Face

Water is the most ferocious element, calm and subtle on its own, ruthless and unforgiving when joined with the wind.

The wind was beyond fierce, and the rain covered every one of our directions, making it impossible for us to see what was before and after us. We were soaking wet. No creature was out in the open aside from me and my friend.

The cold from both the rain and the wind was unbearable. Moving in any direction was pointless. The ground was muddy, if we ran or walked or walked too fast we would lose our footing and fall.

"Isn't this just like a waterfall?" Kin said. I had not fully recovered from the hit on the tree. I prayed with everything I knew for the rain to subside.

Thankfully, no zombies would come after us in the rain, they'll be distracted by the sound of water from the sky hitting the earth and the sound of thunder and lightning.

How I loved the smell of rain, the smell of it piercing the ground. I longed for me being at home with a hot cocoa sitting by a fire. How beautiful would that have been, not exposed to a very heavy downpour?

"Let's take cover under a tree, the leaves will reduce the quantity that pours on us," I said as I looked for a tree. I couldn't see anything, it felt like I was blinded by water. "Have seen a tree, follow me"

The tree we hid under, lessened the amount of water that poured on us a little bit. I was cold and my head was aching.

"After this rain stops, let's keep heading east," Kin said, but I didn't hear him clearly.

"Okay," I said, opening my mouth to drink the endless supply of water, "I don't think this rain's going to stop anytime soon. As you said we need to find shelter, no, finding shelter is impossible we have to build one"

"With what? We have no supplies" my friend said, as he drank a whole load of water.

"The good news is that we won't run out of water for some time," I said as I sat and rested my back on the tree.

"So what's the bad news?" Kin did the same.

"Well, you are aware of 'em, one being this rain and the possibility of it not dying down or stopping until after nightfall, two, one of the bad news I hate, not finding our way back to camp, and the last but not the least. Isn't it obvious ". Kin kept shut, I was sure he didn't know what to say.

After two hours or so of continuous rainfall, the rain finally subsided but did not stop.

"Let's start moving," I said, calling after my shivering friend, "I have an idea. Let's remove our clothes when the rain stops. We are going to walk in our underwear"

"Good idea but that will expose us to more cold, don't you think," Kin said softly as he shivered. I was shivering also.

Water was out of our essential league, what we now needed was food and heat.

"Let's make a fire," Kin said, wrapping his arms around his body. An idea popped into my head.

" Instead of us removing our clothes, when the rain stops, let's just squeeze our clothes dry. We'll let the wind do the rest of drying the wetness."

Kin stood from the side of the tree he rested on, he came to me and handed me his knife. "Here take. Have it, I used my last energy, to kill that zombie. I don't think I can even swing my hands now. "

"No, keep it. I'll find a good stick. And you forgot I have a knife on my shortened spear." I still had the spear I used to kill the deer, it was in my bag with its head sticking out of it.

"You can just tie your knife on a good stick and make a brand new spear" Kin insisted and advised.

"Thanks though, but I prefer using my shortened spear for now," I said, " I know you are starving. I'm sorry I lost the rabbit, I'll make it up to you, I promise... I promise I'll get you back safely to camp and before that. I'll get you a decent meal"

Kin let out a short laugh.

"You've changed this couple of weeks." Kin was smiling.

"Well if you say so, " I said, shrugging.

"Heyt is going to yearn for his title" Kin was smiling to himself.

"Yearn?" I was confused.

"You'll soon understand," Kin said giving me a pat on my back.

"I know you don't like Heyt but what do you mean he will yearn for his title."

"Ion have time to argue. Let's just keep moving."

What does Kin mean by Heyt yearning for his title? I asked myself. Well, maybe he was exhausted.

"Shh... I heard something." It wasn't the sound of the dripping rain, I did hear something.

I saw what I heard, a few zombies. Five of them were chasing after the water in the sky.

"Duck.... Duck... " I called after my friend to bend down.

The zombies weren't that far from us. If we made a sound, they would come rushing towards us.

"Not this freaks again. " Kin looked fed up and lost for what to do. He was cold and tired. It was time to protect my friend.

"Let's just turn around," I said

"No we can take 'em," Kin said holding his knife.

"Stay back let me, do this," I said collecting the knife from him.

"No wait"

"Don't worry I got this."

I must admit I felt nervous as I tipped my toes towards the zombies, Their eyes were on the sky, distracted by the dropping water and the tapping sounds it left behind.

I was very close to them, close enough for them to notice me. I slowly removed my spare from my bag. Kin's knife was in my left hand and my spear in my right.

I rushed at the closest zombie, its death was swift. My spare impaled its delicate head the others noticed me. I threw my spear at one, the face was familiar. Even though it had begun the process of decaying.

The face of the zombie was Myloe...
