Chapter 37 - Unexpected Guest

Deep within the labyrinthine woods, Xavier moved stealthily, a shadow amidst shadows. His steps were silent, treading lightly on the forest floor as he sought the elusive trail of the Shadowfang Serpent. The canopy above cast a dappled mosaic of moonlight and shadow, creating an ethereal yet ominous ambiance.

Expertly crafted traps lay scattered strategically, each one a testament to Xavier's meticulous planning. Concealed under fallen foliage and woven from vines, the traps were designed with precision, sophisticated mechanisms poised to ensnare the serpent without inflicting immediate harm.

The night air crackled with an anticipatory energy as Xavier worked, his movements precise and deliberate. Each trap was carefully positioned, taking advantage of the serpent's stealthy approach, intended to trigger upon the slightest disturbance.

As the moments stretched into hours, Xavier's senses remained on high alert, attuned to the subtlest of sounds and the faintest of movements. The forest seemed to hold its breath, waiting for the inevitable clash between hunter and hunted.

The serpentine hiss that sliced through the stillness alerted Xavier to the serpent's presence. A carefully set trap, woven from supple vines and disguised under a layer of leaves, caught the creature by surprise. The mechanism, engineered with finesse, sprang into action, ensnaring the serpent in a web of tangled vines, holding it in place.

The Shadowfang Serpent thrashed wildly, its scales glistening in the moonlight as it attempted to break free from the cleverly devised trap. Xavier moved swiftly, closing the distance with calculated caution, mindful of the serpent's lethal fangs.

Dancing on the edge of danger, Xavier maneuvered around the serpent's entangled form. With nimble precision, he delivered a calculated series of strikes, aiming for the creature's weak spots while avoiding the venomous threats posed by its snapping jaws.

The serpent's furious struggles weakened, its movements growing sluggish as Xavier's calculated attacks took their toll. With practiced skill, he exploited every opportunity, each strike weakening the serpent further.

In a swift and fluid motion, Xavier seized the pivotal moment. Drawing upon his agility and precision, he orchestrated a final assault. The keen edge of his short swords found purchase, slicing through the air with lethal intent as he targeted the serpent's vulnerable spot.

The forest reverberated with the serpent's agonized roar as Xavier's decisive strike landed true. He plunged his blade deep into the creature's underbelly, delivering a final, fatal blow. The serpent convulsed, its thrashes growing feeble until a solemn silence fell over the woods.

The moon cast an ethereal glow upon the clearing where Xavier stood, his figure illuminated by its soft, silvery light. As he stared at the lifeless remains of the Shadowfang Serpent, a heavy sigh escaped his lips. Thoughts whirled in his mind, pondering the battle that had just transpired.

"Why didn't I just attack head-on?" Xavier muttered softly to himself, a tinge of frustration in his voice. His mind drifted to his past life as a handyman, a time when he had learned to navigate challenges with cunning and strategy rather than brute force. Despite gaining incredible powers through the system, that ingrained habit persisted, almost as an instinct he couldn't shake off.

Even with the strength of a rank two hunter now at his disposal, Xavier found himself hesitating to confront foes directly. It was an internal conflict, a clash between the instincts of his former life and the newfound abilities granted by the system. He knew he could overpower many adversaries with sheer strength, yet his inclination to rely on cunning and tactics persisted, a remnant of his past.

His reverie was abruptly interrupted by the telltale sound of a twig snapping nearby. Xavier's head snapped in the direction of the noise, his senses instantly alert. Emerging from the darkened embrace of the forest, Aric Von Caelum materialized, his presence casting a foreboding shadow upon the moonlit clearing.

A cruel grin adorned Aric's face, the glint in his eyes betraying a malevolent intent.

"Fancy meeting you here, Xavier," Aric's voice sliced through the stillness, each syllable laced with a calculated edge.

Xavier's muscles tensed as he met Aric's gaze, a mixture of wariness and defiance in his eyes. He knew there was no coincidence in Aric's sudden appearance, a sense of foreboding tingling at the edges of his consciousness.

"Didn't expect to see you lurking in the shadows," Xavier retorted evenly, his voice tinged with caution.

Aric's grin widened, a predatory glint dancing in his eyes.

"Oh, I do have a knack for timing," he quipped, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "And I've been quite eager to have a little chat with you, Xavier."

These words brought upon them a short silence, leaving both sides peering deep into each other's eyes as if they were contemplating their next move.

"Are you here to kill me, Aric?" Xavier's voice cut through the tense silence, his tone firm and direct.

Aric's laughter rang out, a chilling sound that seemed to echo through the night.

"Ah, Xavier, always the astute one," Aric chuckled, a sinister glint in his eyes. "Perhaps killing you is one option, but I'm offering you a chance here."

He leaned in slightly, his voice lowering to a menacing whisper. "Hand over that secret artifact you're hiding, and maybe, just maybe, I'll let you walk out of here alive."

Xavier's expression twisted into a disdainful snort. He gestured towards the lifeless form of the Shadowfang Serpent at his feet.

"You've seen me fight. I don't have any secret artifact," he retorted, his voice tinged with defiance. "Why insist on something that has no evidence?"

Aric's grin widened, a twisted amusement dancing in his eyes. "Because I can," he replied cryptically, his tone dripping with arrogance. "And perhaps I enjoy the thrill of the chase more than the prize itself."

"I see..." Xavier's tone hardened as he responded.

The air crackled with tension, the moon overhead casting elongated shadows that seemed to dance around the two figures. Xavier's hand instinctively hovered near his weapon, ready for whatever confrontation Aric had brought upon him.

As Xavier faced Aric's imposing presence, a battle not just of strength but of wit and will seemed inevitable, looming like a storm on the horizon.
