…
It's been five days already and they still haven't returned, Justin said with a solemn look. If it was just a random scout team, he would have reported them as dead but, this was no ordinary scout team, his daughter was part of the team in question.
"Adams, why don't we create a search party, that way we can find them faster," Sophie's father asked.
(Adams was the other man in the tent when Kai met Sophie's father.)
"Right now, we have limited amount of manpower besides, the king ordered us to deal with that overlord within the next two months else, we can forget about leaving this damned place," Adams replied, "For now, we can't do anything to help them so let's try to defeat the overlord as soon as possible."
"So, you're suggesting that I should allow my daughter to die?"
"I never said so. All I said was most of our men are injured and we gave to allocate our resources wisely besides, Sophie is quite talented so I'm sure she would come back but as for the boy, I can't say the same," Adams replied.
"I never cared about the boy, as long as my daughter comes back, I have no problems," Justin replied, "besides if the boy died the only thing that would happen is just the royal army compensating his family and just reprimand us for not looking after our men properly."
Besides, I feel it will be better if that boy ends up dying. Heat way he would save so many people from experiencing future embarrassment, Justin muttered "alright Adams, let get back to work," Justin said as he continued his preparations for the battle against the soul beast's overlord.
…
Alright, let's split the soul shards we've gotten so far. I have 23 soul shards, how about you? I asked Sophie.
"I have 31 soul shards."
"Hand over 4 soul shards, don't forget you were the one who said we were going to share our lots equally," I said with a smirk.
"Tsk, you're not just shameless but you're greedy as well", Sophie snorted as she passed me 4 soul shards.
In this world, making use of soul shards to improve one's cultivation was a very common thing. Although a person could cultivate normally by absorbing the mana in the air into one's soul, most still preferred using soul shards since they contained pure mana that had been refined by soul beasts.
But not just anyone could get their hands on a soul shard since they were monopolized by the royal family and the nobles so to get soul shards, some people would go out into the soul beast's mountain zone to hunt soul beasts.
(A soul shard is gotten when a soul beast is dead, all the mana within the soul of the soul beasts copulates and form the soul shards the instant they die.)
And even though the royal family didn't complain about this, they made a law that no one was allowed to sell the soul shards to others, only the royal family could sell the soul shards not even the nobles.
~And she's calling me shameless and greedy, I snorted as I glanced d at Sophie.
Although Sophie was born as a commoner, she managed to join a noble family after she shocked everyone in the kingdom with her extraordinary talent and although her talent was not as monstrous as that of the children of the nobles who were constantly being fed with soul shards, her talent was still very impressive. She was the only commoner to have become an expert stage cultivator at the age of 21.
If only she didn't become proud and arrogant after joining the nobles, I muttered with a sigh.
"Let's start moving back to the camp we've stayed in this place for a while now," I said. After completing our mission, we decided to hunt down some soul beasts with weaker cultivation since we didn't have to worry about the soul beast overlord attacking the camp.
"We should have taken the soul shards of those soul beasts we killed with the overlord," Sophie grumbled as she packed her things.
"If you really want it, you can go back to get it but, you'll have to go on your own," I suggested "I don't see the reason we should collect soul shards if we won't be alive to use them."
After killing the soul beasts' overlord, we had to quickly leave the area quickly so, we didn't get to pick a lot of soul shards.
Although a soul beasts' overlord is not really one of the most powerful soul beasts, it was still often targeted by powerful soul beasts who needed a new domain or subordinates.
But it's not like I regret leaving those soul shards behind. Besides, I got quite a good amount of Exp, and system point from this mission already so I was already satisfied.
…
"Hey, I heard you and Sophie went on a 'mission' together," a boy who looked older than I was asked as we walked into the camp.
"Maverick, calm down. We just went to scout the area together and ended up getting lost," Sophie said "besides it's not like you're in charge of me or something so I don't think you should be bothered with what I do "
"You heard her," I said, "there's no reason she would ever talk to trash like you so shoo."
"Hey boy, you better mind the way you speak to me," he replied angrily "how can someone like you speak to me rudely, people like you should be taught a lesson."
"Sophie, is he one of my love rivals?" I whispered into Sophie's ear "because I can't possibly think of another reason as to why someone would be angry that you and I spent quality time together."
"You," Sophie stammered as her face turned beet red "don't go around saying stuff like that, people can easily misunderstand what you are trying to say."
"Maverick, stop creating a scene," I said with a suppressive aura "we were only assigned a mission which you aren't capable of handling besides I don't think you have any right to speak to me like that except you've become the commander of this mission and by then I'll still be above you."
"You can only talk big because we weren't there to see you begging Sophie to protect you," Maverick retorted.
"Hey, don't talk about Sophie at all besides did you ask for my permission before staring at her," I said.
"Sophie how come almost all the boys here are in love with you?" I asked, "I feel as if you've been cheating on me."
To be honest, I couldn't really blame anyone. Sophie was already very beautiful and with her outstanding cultivation talent, there was no way most people wouldn't fall in love with her, even the previous user of my body and the current me is still in love with her.
"Maverick, if you really want to be with her all the time, why don't you become my butler instead, that way you'll be around me when I see Sophie and if I don't like your attitude I can give you some days off," I teased him as everyone around burst out laughing. Even Sophie couldn't hold back her laughter.
"You bastard," Maverick yelled as he prepared to launch an attack on me. Although Maverick was also an advance stage cultivator like me, I knew he had zero chance of defeating me besides, this was a good opportunity for me to show off my strength as they say using the monkey to teach the chickens besides, everyone could testify that I only beat him up for self-defense.
"Enough," Sophie's father roared as he used his aura to pin us down "boy, you know you ought to report back to your commander before playing around."
"Commander Justin, I never intended to that however, some random person who claimed to be your son-in-law, had a thing or two to tell me," I said as I pointed at Maverick.
"Just come with me boy," Commander Justin said with his face clearly twitching in anger.
…
"Alright boy, give us the report on the soul beast overlord, I want to know everything including how much time you think we have before the overlord attacks nearby cities," Commander Justin asked with a serious tone.
"What overlord?" I asked.
"Don't tell me that all those times you weren't here, you took it as an opportunity to hang out with my daughter?" Sophie's father asked angrily "if you can't give me the answers I want, I can guarantee you that you'll be sent back to recover for another 50 years."
"Oh, now I remember the overlord you are talking about," I said with a light smile "Sir, the soul beast overlord you're talking about is already dead."
WHAT!!!
