Chapter 4 - {4} The Xiao Family 1.2

A few hours earlier...

Zhao Ling gazed at the ailing young miss with a profound sense of sympathy, her heart heavy with empathy. "I can't help but feel for that young lady. Imagine being struck down by such a deadly illness, her youth stolen from her," she sighed, her gaze fixed on the frail figure before her.

In her past life on Earth, Zhao Ling had battled sicknesses too, often having to take leaves from school. Being an orphan from birth, she had no one to care for her during those times. She recalled a close call, nearly succumbing to a high fever and unconsciousness after a head injury. It was only her kind old neighbor's intervention that saved her from certain death.

"If it weren't for that couple, I might not be here," Zhao Ling mused, her thoughts wandering into the past. "This young lady is fortunate to have a loving family, but fate has dealt her a cruel hand with this disease."

Suddenly, an unexpected message flashed before her: [Wheel of fortune time! Get lucky awards and spin the wheel now!]

"What on Earth is this 'wheel of fortune'?" Zhao Ling exclaimed, caught off guard.

The system explained, [When you accomplish a set of missions quickly, it rewards you with a chance to spin the wheel of fortune.]

Realization dawned, "So, you're not entirely useless, huh? But is it free?"

The system replied, [No, it costs 30 points, and you currently have 60 points.]

Annoyed but desperate, Zhao Ling grumbled, "Fine, deduct the points, then."

With an irritable sigh, she pressed "Spin!" The wheel whirled before landing on "Above Average Loot Box."

"Alright, open it," she demanded.

As the rewards were revealed—1,000-year-old Red Ginseng, a space-utilizing purple ring, luminous pearls, a name tag, a token of mind control, a golden chicken wing, Wallmart chips, deathly scissors, a bag of herbs, and colorful moonlit pebbles—Zhao Ling felt her anger rise. "What kind of useless loot is this? Except for the space ring and the ginseng, everything's absurd! What am I going to do with a golden chicken wing or chips from WALLMART?"

Frustration bubbled within her, and she absentmindedly reached for the ginseng, but instead, her hand grasped the name tag. "Useless piece of junk," she muttered.

The system interjected, [Host, don't just throw it away. The name tag has a vital role, especially now that you need a title to enter and treat Miss Xiao for your mission.]

Curiosity piqued, Zhao Ling inquired, "Explain the importance of this name tag."

[The legendary name tag can bestow any title other than a powerful Immortal or Emperor. Once you inscribe the desired title, it's acknowledged throughout this world. It wields great power, so you must wield it responsibly, Host.]

"Such power in a simple wooden tag?" she marveled. "Should I make myself a high-class doctor, then?"

The system left the choice to her, and she pondered for a moment. A memory surfaced of the 'Spirit Doctor,' a legendary healer in one of her favorite books who could cure any ailment, even resurrecting the dead. "What if I become the 'Spirit Doctor'? I'm sure the real one won't mind."

And with a grin, she declared, "I want to be a Spirit Doctor."

The plain wooden tag transformed into jade, inscribed with 'Spirit Doctor' on the front and 'Doctor Zhao Ling' on the back. "Doctor Zhao Ling," she read aloud with satisfaction.

Feeling empowered, she looked at the system, teasing, "You were saying something, Fufu?"

The system, momentarily at a loss for words, eventually replied, "Nothing."

Now armed with her newfound title, Zhao Ling was ready to fulfill her mission. She approached one of the guards of the residence and presented her gleaming jade token, which emitted a celestial glow under the moonlight. "Tell your master that I'm here to heal Miss Xiao Xiu. I've been divinely appointed to attend to her," she declared calmly.

Unable to resist the aura of the woman or the allure of the jade token, the guard quickly informed his superior.

Soon, footsteps approached, and Zhao Ling was welcomed into the residence.

As they made their way to Miss Xiao's room, Zhao Ling sensed a presence following her. She stopped and inquired, "Is someone following me, Fufu?"

The system revealed, [Host is currently being watched by the hidden guards of the Xiao Family and the Black Hidden Knights of the Demon's Gate Cult.]

"Is that man responsible for this?" Zhao Ling wondered.

"I suspect so," the system responded.

Zhao Ling inwardly chuckled, plotting to confront him about the price of saving his life, or perhaps, latch onto his "golden thigh."

Before long, they arrived at Miss Xiao's opulent courtyard. The meticulously arranged plants, the crystal-clear pond fountain, and the luxurious decor spoke of a beloved owner. However, the atmosphere held a hint of melancholy, aware of the impending tragedy that could befall its mistress.

Zhao Ling, determined to find a way to cure the ailing young miss, was interrupted by a servant who rushed out of the room, panic-stricken. "Master! The miss has stopped breathing!"

"What?!"

She turned to the system for guidance, muttering, "Fufu, can you help me with this, please?"

The system assured her, [I will do everything within my power to assist you, Host.]
