Chereads / Rift Keeper / Chapter 2 - Rift Consciousness

Chapter 2 - Rift Consciousness

Michael was now within a cave like place, which were illuminated by blue crystals that hung from the ceiling. These crystals gave of subtle arcane energy, which made Michael feel comfortable. These crystal were an example of resources that were found inside of space cracks, yet hardly would one be found jumping into a space crack.

Space cracks were sub-spaces within the rift, they had failed to become complete planar realms. There were mostly field with loads of valuable resources, but the dangers involved dwarfs the rewards at most times.

Michael would never had run into a space crack on a normal day, but compared to what his physical condition at the moment was, the crack looked like heaven. Though he was still very uncertain, as a place having this sort of arcane would surely attract Rift monsters.

He decided to clear his mind of all this, he was already in a tricky situation. He would have to find a way out of this, as no one would even look for him. No one he knew before, even knows the location he went to. Not his friends, whom he grew up with. Not his family, and not his master.

All this people cared for him when he was little, but after his twelfth birthday, when his aptitude for arcane arts was shown to be far below average. That was the day it all changed. When they got to fourteen all his friends went to prestigious academies, to hone their skills, and become great rift keepers.

His father on the other hand, decided that he could not let this failure of a son go out to disgrace his name. He home schooled Michael with an incompetent idiot. His master would teach him close to nothing, and spend the remaining time narrating stories of his students that had gone to great heights.

Michael summoned courage to tell his father of this, and his father confirmed from the man. That day marked the beginning of his self-taught period. His master had lied to Michael's dad that he was trying his best, and that Michael was just unteachable. The man even swore on his arcane path. It didn't need much convincing, as Michael's father knew his son's aptitude.

This event caused Michael to be despised by his father. Though never mentioned, Michael could see it in the eyes of his father. All this led to the reason he left home a couple months back.

As he observed the cave, he felt a stronger, more pure arcane energy from the deeper parts of the cave. Against his better judgment, he decided to go in. he walked for a few minutes, before getting to a large spacious part of the cave. Crystals shown brightly from the walls of the cave, giving out powerful yet gentle arcane energy. At the center of the space was a large crystal, at least three meters tall and a meter wide. Standing there it gave off the most energy in the room, which was expected considering its size.

Michael walked to the crystal, and sat beside it. His intention was to absorb the arcane energy and use it to heal his wounds, only then would he be able to think about leaving safely. He sat down beside the crystal, and began absorbing the arcane energy.

[Hey kid]

Michael shot up as he heard a voice from nowhere. He got on his guard, ready to fight.

[Calm down kid, you are not in danger.]

Michael kept his vigilance at its peak.

"Who are you?"

[Technically, I am not a person. I am a rift consciousness within this crystal.]

"Rift consciousness, what is that?"

[Well I was created at the beginning, when the rift was born. The primordial arcane energy used in forming the rift, was also what created me. Though I do not know why it was so.]

"Damn your old" Michael remarked.

[Old your head. I do not age]

"Whatever. Michael said waving his hands. "Have you been trapped here since then?"

[Yes, since the creation, I have been within this crack. Nobody has ever been able to find nor enter this crack, you are the first being I am making contact with.]

"Wait, if that is so then how do you know I am a kid, also how are you speaking to me?"

[For your first question, every being that is alive within the rift as of now, is a kid to me. Second I am speaking directly to your consciousness, so your brain is translating my intent to words. I am using the same method to understand you]

"That is understandable." Michael ad seen all sorts of spells and arcane arts, so he had seen things like this.

[Kid, your core, something seems to be wrong with it]

The voice spoke, immediately catching Michael's interest.

"My core, what's wrong?" He asked

[It was hard to notice, but there is a natural seal on it]

"Seal? You mean someone placed a seal on my core?" Michael's anger was already spiking.

[Calm down kid. A natural seal is one placed on a person by the laws. It is done so as to stop a being that can cause major misbalance to worlds or even realms from reaching their full potential]

"So you mean that all this while, I was being bullied by the laws." Anger was evident of Michaels face.

[Calm down kid, I can help you]

"Huh, how?"

[Simple, carry me within your sea of consciousness. I will help you to suppress the seal, wearing it out.]

"Nope, I can't just let a being I just met into my sea of consciousness. You could try to take over my body." Michael outright refused.

[I wasn't asking.]

Michael suddenly heard the voice from within his consciousness.

"FUCK! HOW?"

[I possess more consciousness strength and arcane energy than you. Your defense was like a paper tissue. Don't worry, I won't try to take over you like you said, in fact I can't, seeing I don't have soul. All I want is to be able to see the outside through you, in exchange that I help you get stronger]

"Ok, I thinks it's better to take this risk, seeing I would get killed soon. Please don't go back on your words."

[Don't worry kid, your journey begins here and now].
