Chapter 43 - Mystery

"They were drawings of a city.

Not just any city, it was enormous, and, most importantly,

I had no idea which city it was.

It looked like London, but it had details of New York.

In addition to not having either the Big Bang or the Statue of Liberty.

There were some skyscrapers like those in New York, but there were also classical features like those of London.

This intrigued me, what city was this, and more importantly, who drew it.

"Boss, what do we do now?"

"Now we continue exploring and, if possible, discover the origin of this smell."

We started exploring the place, and in no time, we managed to illuminate a good part of the hole.

And we found the origin of the smell.

It wasn't a natural gas or an animal.

It was a plant.

Or rather, flowers, hundreds of them.

They looked like night-blooming jasmine, a very beautiful flower, but these were black instead of white.

They emitted the smell we were experiencing.

But the part that intrigued me the most was that.

How are they alive?

There is no light or water; how can they be alive here!

Whether it's the flowers or the drawings on the wall, everything here is a mystery to me.

And that makes me wonder, did I really go back in time?

...

"Mr. Cornelius, is this right?"

"Uhmm, if you press here and here, it will be fine."

"Like this?"

"That's right, now continue."

"Yes, sir."

Uhmm, it's been a few days since the boss and the others crossed these waters; I hope nothing has happened.

"Cornelius! You're late."

"I'm sorry, had to settle some matters with the artisans."

"So, how's it going?"

"The same, I bet two pieces of meat it'll be just like the other times."

"Joe, are you sure? Don't forget we're low on meat."

"Why the certainty? It's always the same; I just don't understand why you always think it's going to change."

"I can always get a piece of meat, but not everyone can create something new."

"I see, I see, you always say that and always lose."

"We'll see."

Ah, I really hope not to lose more meat this time, I'm counting on you, John.

"Can you stop betting on my success or failure?"

"No, it's fun, hahaha!"

"You'll see, especially you, Joe, today is the day you lose."

"Okay, you've said that before too, forgot?"

"No, no, I didn't forget, but this time I know what I did wrong."

"Behold our future homes!"

"Wow, it's so small, I think the only thing that can live there is ants."

"That's why you're the leader of many muscles and little brain."

"It's just a test, and look, it didn't fall, it's firm. Now I just have to make a version for us."

"Uhmm, I understand, if you build something like this for us, we won't have to worry about the cold at night or predators all the time."

"I still don't see anything special; I know the boss told you to create this with Fred's drawing, but I still think tents are enough."

"I doubt you'll keep saying that when I build the real thing."

"Well, when are you going to build this?"

"When the boss returns."

"I see, and what's the name of this?"

"The boss calls it Egyptian houses."

"Egyptian houses? What does 'Egyptian' mean?"

"I have no idea; the boss gave it that name."

"Uhmm, could it be the name of the tribe?"

"The name of the tribe? What do you mean?"

"The boss has a name for everything; it would be normal for him to give a name to the tribe, to refer to us as something, and that something might be Egyptian."

"So are we Egyptians?"

"Well, that's a maybe."

"Egyptian sounds like a good name."

"I agree. I hope the boss doesn't take much longer; otherwise, we can only speculate."
