Chapter 2 - 2: The Finding

She turned back into the lady in her mid fifties, with just her limbs that of a wolf, and walked towards me with the most dreadful eyes I had ever seen.

Fear made my heart beat so fast, and I feared it would burst out of its cavity. I walked backwards, getting ready to run as fast as I could. Suddenly, I heard a voice announcing that the external guests should leave the venue.

"I should leave Ma," I said, knowing fully well how unnecessary it was to say that. There was no way she would let me leave.

"We can't allow you to leave. You saw what you shouldn't have ever seen." Her voice was so cold. One could tell it intended evil.

But "who are they?" I whispered, but no reasonable answer came to my head.

As she walked closer to me, I saw her face changed and transformed into that of a wolf.

I pulled out one of my shoes and threw at her, plugging it to one of her legs, then I spun to the exit and ran as fast as my legs could carry.

I wanted to seek help, in fact I needed to, but who could I possibly call upon? My mind crossed ken, but was skeptical, as I was ignorant if he was part of the "we" she was talking about.

"Where are you, Adira? I have been searching for you all over the place." Ken's voice thundered when I picked my phone. He sounded concerned.

"I don't know where I am. I'm on the run as we speak and we need to leave this place Ken!!, these people are dangerous"

I shouted back, with a voice so faint and my heart racing.

He ended the call immediately, and I didn't understand why. I called back only for it to be sent to voicemail. I pulled out the remaining shoe I had on me and intensified my race.

I had run in an entirely different direction from the party venue. My instincts had informed me that the "we" she was talking about might be waiting for me at the main exit, so I decided to avoid it.

As I ran, my gaze scanned through the numerous duplexes perfectly lined in the estate.

The environment was heartwarming, just like the decorations at the party. One would not believe what I saw could ever happen here.

I sought refuge in one of the mansions, feeling it was a wise thing to do, and I tiptoed into the mansion through the back door.

The house was a large and beautifully decorated one. Family pictures were plastered perfectly on the wall that faced the exit of the living room. My eyes fell on a brown iron container placed under the stairs and I felt it was a perfect place to hide.

However, my plans were aborted by the sudden bark of an ugly pit-bull, which barked at me as soon as I opened the container.

"Woof, woof, woof!!" he barked intensively, sending vibrating sounds into the dead silence of the estate.

I shouted almost immediately, forgetting about my intention to be as discreet as possible.

"But who on earth leaves a pit-bull this way?'' I wondered. I was lucky the pit-bull was chained, or it would have torn me apart.

I quickly jammed the door to his face and was on my way out of the mansion when an old man walked into me.

"Who are you?" he asked, while pointing a walking stick towards me as defense.

"I need your help, sir. Those people out there want to kill me. Please let me hide here till the night."

I pleaded, looking as vulnerable as I could. The look on his face suddenly changed. Although I couldn't read his countenance, I could sense how hard he tried to remain calm.

After what seemed like a quick thought, he dropped the stick to the tiled floor and gestured to me to sit on a coffee brown sofa placed in the living room. As I tried to sit, he rushed and jammed the door.

"You must be one of them," I stuttered, my voice so husky and cold. I reached for his hands and pushed him out of the door and made my way to an unknown destination.

"Everyone in the estate is one of them, so the earlier you turn yourself in, the better," he shouted on top of his echoing voice. The mansion echoed unapologetically, like it was empty.

As I ran, my gaze began to fade, and I knew I needed to stop to avoid passing out. I had stopped at the field to catch some breath, when I saw some wolves racing towards me. It seemed like the old man had alerted the pack.

My fears became intense as they got closer, leaving my body soaked in sweat. I wished for the ground to open and swallow me, but it didn't. I fell to the ground and fainted.

The wind blew aggressively, casting the branches of the palm tree in various directions. I had woken up in the thick night, with my hands tied perfectly to a seat kept in the field, and my mouth sealed. All I could hear were the thick footsteps of the pack.

 "Who's that?" I whimpered.

They bathed my voice in fear and my stomach rumbled terribly. I recalled I had only had two gulps of Champagne since the day began. The footsteps became incessant, casting tremors into the dead silence. They were still dressed in black from the wedding.

They matched towards me in a single file. The old woman was their leader. She appeared to have a bandage on her leg and I suspected it emanated from the heels I threw at her. I knew that whatever my offense was; it was not a pitying one.

"This was meant to be a harmless party Adira, but we're sorry you have to end this way." Ken said, in a voice so cold to mention I'm sorry to talk more of feeling it.

They had circled my tied body, and each with a dreaded looking face that sought vengeance.

I plastered my spooked gaze on him and I believed my life would end in a matter of minutes. Everything about me screamed helplessness. I couldn't even bring myself to feel pain anymore,I felt it was just a matter of minutes before I joined my maker.

"I'm sorry friend, this wasn't the plan," he continued.

"I'll make this as less painful as attainable".

Sweats dropped from my oval face and chest and body, even though others were freezing. It was obvious that my adrenaline was overworking itself, and my sympathetic response over the board.

The old woman nodded her head, which was meant to be some sort of order. This caused Ken to pull out a small triangular blade and made his way to my throat.

He stopped when the blade suddenly changed color. The blade had turned green before our eyes, making him throw it to the floor and fidgeting vehemently. I could see the surprise on his face.

 "She is one of us"

He shouted, with the most surprised look ever as he turned towards their leader.
