Chapter 7 - sympathy

Tiffany patted Char on the shoulder, and she still treated him like a child.

"It didn't look like they were having a good conversation, so I chose to stay out of it... Because I expected this to happen. Demon hunters are scattered, and not everyone is strong-willed or well-trained, so if you had any misconceptions about demon hunters, now you've seen something to correct them."

Charles stared intently in the direction of the campstone, and he saw Dalton angrily walk away from Master Frederic and his family, passing Charles and Tiffany without even saying hello.

Dalton wouldn't talk to Tiffany, but Tiffany was trying to stop him.

"Hey, where are you going?" Jaffe lunged up to Dalton, older and more commanding, forcing him to stop.

"I want to go home." Dalton repeated.

That made Char think he was a coward, through and through. Every one of us, leaving everything behind, gathering in the Twilight Forest to hunt down the Blade Demon, and you want to leave?

"You don't know how dangerous it is out there." Tiffany counseled kindly.

"It's the same here, being here makes me all hairy, and I shouldn't have come here!" 'cried Dalton.

"We're demon hunters, and we have a job to do." Char could not help saying. Is there anything more regrettable than giving up halfway through one's career?

"Don't fucking lecture me, stupid." 'snapped Dalton.' You take yourself seriously? Tiffany's a hunter, and you're a bird, a recruit."

Shire was scolded in the face, but his face did not change. He is sure that the other party is just purely to vent and scold, the Shire looks down on such a vulgar person, will not take these words to heart.

Seeing Char's face did not change, Tiffany nodded.

"I am a fellow demon hunter with you, and we have sworn to the Loman Godwish in the same chapel, and we have had some good holidays, and celebrated some successful hunts, and you know, Dalton, that my counsel is always reliable. I advise you for the last time -- don't leave alone." Tiffany did what she could to bring Dalton back into their business.

"It's all nonsense, this place... It's all nonsense..." Dalton was sweating a lot. "It's daylight, and I can find my way out in a day with all my strength."

"You know how big and primitive the twilight forest is, and you can get lost." "Tiffany said.

"Aren't we lost now? We've proven that Varun bears the marks of the devil, but Frederic refuses to arrest him! You -- you can't all be trusted! It was Warren who suggested that we split up, and you want to get us killed when you can't see through such a plain scheme?" 'cried Dalton.' Get out of here! '

Tiffany avoids Dalton and lets him storm off.

"Is Warren really the devil?" Char looked in the direction of the campstone.

"There are similar rumors that Wallen stared too long at the form of a demon during an operation and suffered a degree of spiritual destruction... But I believe he can control himself." Tiffany whispered confessions.

There is a demon among us! The thought made Charles shudder, thinking that the night before, they had rested with Valen just a stone's throw away, Valen had choked me, perhaps Valen really wanted to kill me.

He was frowning and worried.

Tiffany sighed and led Charles back to the campstone, where Frederic and Valen were talking very closely, as if they were both trying to control their emotions, and Etienne would occasionally intercede without saying much to them.

'Dalton's gone! Jeffery announced, "Look at you guys. Thanks to our wonderful teamwork attitude, we're down to four hunters and one recruit."

"Are you really the devil?" Charles dared to ask Valen. He was desperate for an answer. He wanted someone to tell him that they were still a team of humans, intent on hunting demons.

Warren smiled a terrible smile at Charles, and made no reply.

"Well, we'll talk about you when we get back to the Chapel." Master Frederic waved his hand to stop the discussion. "I will say that the spell I used to hunt the demon has responded. We have finally located the Blade Demon and are ready to attack."

"So the plan worked." "Tiffany said.

"That's right." Frederick nodded. "The Blade Demon didn't get away in time."

A series of different theories arose in Shire's mind, and these thoughts ran through him with a shudder.

And so on... The Blade Demon didn't escape. Why? Because it stopped, it was slowed down.

Why was it slow to escape the demon hunters' net? Because he meets the demon hunter, because he has to stop for a moment to fight the demon hunter, he has to set a trap and kill the hunter. It succeeded, it did kill the hunters, but it also suffered a decisive defeat, because it did not escape the hunters' net, it stayed so long that we could capture it directly with a locator spell...

Char's breathing became rapid.

He looked to Etienne for help. "Denver... Denver is dead because we're delaying... Blade demon?"

Etienne nodded coldly, acknowledging Charles's conjecture.

"He was armed when he died. He fought valiantly. He was a good man, as you say."

Char turned to Master Frederic, looking terrified. Frederic is our powerful leader. How could he make such a cold decision? He should

Frederic did not avoid Char's eyes, but simply replied, "Son, you should know that sacrifice is a virtue."

Char looked at the others again, hoping for a reassuring answer.

"Yes, yes." Warren intoned, "We will do anything to succeed in hunting the devil." Isn't that who we are? This is your first time finding out? The blade demon is also a powerful demon of high rank in hell, and when we catch it, the poet will write many songs praising our martial arts! Countless people of later generations should be grateful for our contribution, in contrast, ah! What's two dead people?"

Jaffney looked into Char's pained and confused eyes and comforted him, "Char, we are at a disadvantage in chasing demons, and hunters in other regions have inherited spells suitable for tracking and hunting, but we don't." We can't ride horses, you know, animals can be possessed by demons in an instant, and we have to rely on humans, on us hunters. The battle proved to be a success. We delayed the Blade Demon's escape. As long as we succeeded in bringing it back to the Chapel after the battle, Denver and Julius will not have died in vain."

"Did you know that from the beginning?" Charles looked back at Etienne, his master, the man who had brought him into the hunter trade.

"Julius and their luck is terrible." Etienne's voice shriveled, as if he did not want to face his apprentice. "They happen to be the least suited group to fight the Blade Demon, Julius has limited skills, and Denver... Denver is so much worse than you. If the Blade Demon meets the two of us, meets Frederic, meets Tiffany, Varun, even Dalton... There's no way a blade demon could deliver a kill like that."

It's luck... Is it providence, or are the hunters extreme in their methods? They made a secret plan from the start, sacrificing the weaker among us to stall the Blade Demon. Now that I think about it, maybe half of us didn't know.

Shire felt absurd at the thought.

"Look at that look in your eyes." Warren glanced at Shire and shook his head disdainfully, "What is this, a sense of justice?" Save it. It's disgusting. Frederic, use a locator spell and let's go."

"The Hunt begins!" Frederic called out the Hunter's Spell, and a blue arrow flew out of his hand toward the eastern side of the forest, dragging a thin thread at the end of the arrow, linking Frederic to his target.

The thread wobbled violently at first, but after ten seconds, it gradually settled down.

"Right now, our Church of the Grey Tree will be the most famous hunter's church in the kingdom." Frederick saw the thread fixed and nodded contentedly, "All the other churches, the West Coast Branch, the Green River Area, Lower Loman... Look up to our legendary achievements. 'Blade demon', a really powerful demon, the main symbol of sharp blades, sharp things, and many weapons with sharp edge also belong to its jurisdiction, such a broad coverage concept, can dominate tens of thousands of sharp weapons, the strength of the demon, fell into our net. Many wizards would pay a lot of money for its shards of power."

Frederick took a deep breath.

"Let's go, Warren, Tiffany, Etienne, all the hard work and hard work has paid off today." He was fired up and ready to start.

'Shire can't stay here alone.' Etienne said suddenly, "I want to stay."

"... Suit yourself, old man, but I'll remember." Frederic shook his head impatiently. "You'd better know what you're doing."

Tiffany gave Char an apologetic look, and soon they were all gone.

The sky was cloudy and seemed to be raining, and though it was day, the visibility was not high, there was a faint moisture in the air, the forest swayed in the breeze, and the branches made strange noises against each other. The whole piece of camping stone remains in the dark cloud in the autumn wind looks more pale and lonely, the ancient people built two ring stone walls seem fragile, a blow will fall.

Char saw the others slip into the woods and disappear.

"Char, why are you acting so strange?" Etienne asked. "You look scared."

"Afraid... I feel for him and I feel for Denver." In fact, Charles felt cold.

"' Sympathy. '" Etienne seemed lost in thought. "Speaking of 'sympathy'... That was probably the first emotion I lost."

'Why?

"Maybe because. Of all emotions, this is the least useful." The corners of Etienne's mouth slowly curled, and the muscles of his face twitched slightly, very strange.

You could see that the old hunter was trying and failing to smile.
