Chapter 49 - A Walk Down Memory Lane

Juan's POV

I stared at the large photo frame of my mom, feeling a knot tighten in my chest. Trying to mimic her patience, I attempted to knot my tie using the reflection, but it proved too challenging for my ten-year-old fingers. Frustrated, I tossed the tie to the floor, wishing Mom was there to help me like she always did. Just then, a soft knock sounded at my door, and Rosa, my stepsister, entered the room.

"How are you doing, little man?" she asked, her voice gentle. It was odd to see her being nice to me, considering our usual dynamic.

"We've been waiting for you downstairs, but it looks like you're having some trouble," she said, picking up my tie and helping me with the knot.

"Why are you being nice to me?" I couldn't help but ask, curious about her sudden kindness.

"Well, you're the kid with a dead mom. You deserve a little kindness today," she replied, her tone softening.
