Chapter 3 - Deception [1] - Immortal

"In the middle of the desert oasis, I felt as if I had died. I was sure of it."

The intense heat from the flames Sado had cast upon me seemed to be melt my body away to mere atoms, causing unbearable agony. But then, something miraculous occurred. I could feel my body slowly reforming, as if all of my cells were being reconstructed like some kind of liquid.

My eyes shot open and I felt a surge of energy radiating through my body, the intense heat gone in an instant. My body had regenerated itself from the smallest particles.

I surveyed my hands and body in disbelief, wondering if it was really true. "I'm alive!" I exclaimed in amazement. "This Immortality thing actually worked?"

Even though my body had been burned beyond recognition, I found that I was somehow regenerated. Moreover, I felt an unprecedented surge of stamina and energy coursing through me; this was strange because I had always been physically weak in my past life. The blazing sunlight shone down on me, yet I felt no heat emanating from it. "This is incredible!" I exclaimed.

I was reminded of the agony I experienced when I was being set on fire. I thought to myself, "It appears that I am still capable of feeling pain. That's not a good thing and I need to be careful of it."

I clenched my fists as I silently vowed to myself, "Sado, you better be on your guard. I swear with this newfound power, I will hunt you down and make sure I get my revenge." My expression became intense and focused.

I surveyed my surroundings, noticing that due to my Immortality my bodily health seems to be at it's peak. My vision was sharp, my hearing, smell, and other senses seemed to be extraordinarily acute.

But there is only one slight problem, "Where the hell am I?", I shouted out in confusion, my voice reverberating in the desert oasis. Everywhere I looked I saw nothing but sand and I had no idea which way to go in order to reach Fuvolius. I was hesitant to continue on in that direction, realizing that it might be wiser to choose a different route.

"AHHHHH"

I heard a sudden loud shriek coming from a short distance away. "What was that?" I wondered.

"SOMEBODY HELP ME!!"

I heard the voice of a young girl and I hollered in response, "I'm on my way!" I began to sprint in the direction from which I had heard her cries.

I completely overlooked the fact that my well-intentioned actions and heroic acts would come back to haunt me. Choosing to help this girl is likely to be just the beginning of the missteps I make upon entering this world. I'm certain that I will soon discover that everyone here is malevolent.

I only sprinted for a short time before I saw a camp with two men, both with swords and wearing clothes of a mercenary. They were tall and intimidating and were taking advantage of a young girl who was begging for help.

I was taken aback as I saw a girl with dark hair, a tail, furry ears and curvy body proportions. "Could this be real? Are there really animal people in this world?!" I thought in shock. I quickly regained my composure and reminded myself, "As a 'hero' summoned here, it is my duty to save the innocent." With that, I dashed off in the direction of their location.

It looked as if they had set up a camp, with two tents, barrels, logs and campfires. There were also a few cooking pots lying around, a few bags of food and a couple of horses grazing nearby. The area was well lit by the light of the campfire, and the smell of smoke was in the air. It seemed like they had been here for a while.

I yelled out to the two men as I saw them attempting to undress her. I shouted, "Hey, stop it right now!" They both paused and looked at me, their eyes full of menace. The man on the left asked in a gruff and deep tone, "Who the hell are you?"

I hadn't considered what I would do if I were to actually get their attention. After a few uneasy blinks, the burlier man on the right said coolly, "Just get rid of him before he causes any trouble." The other man, on the left, strode towards me with a sword in his hand, and an evil smile spread across his face when he said, "I'm already doing that."

I was desperate to leave, yet my body was frozen in fear; my body was shaking and my legs were unsteady. "Am I going to be a loser even in this world?" I thought to myself as the man approached. "Don't move, kid. This won't take long," he said.

The man thrust his glistening silver blade into my chest, undoubtedly piercing my heart. I screamed in excruciating anguish as a stream of blood poured from my mouth and nose. Abruptly, my screams stopped and he was certain I was no longer alive.

The man behind him yelled, "Get rid of the corpse in the sand, it won't make much of a difference!" The one who had stabbed me glanced back and said, "Yea, okay!"

As the man's head revolved in my direction, the sharp blade still embedded in my chest, I felt the ache and anguish ebbing away as the blood which had been spilling from my nose and mouth started to stream back into me.

The man turned to face me, his eyes widening in shock at the sight before him. "How are you alive?!", he yelled. I met his gaze, my face contorted in a deadly scowl. It was the first time I had ever experienced such intense malice, and I wondered if it was due to the reincarnation or my immortality, I did not know.

The man let out a small groan of effort as he attempted to yank the sword from my torso. However, it was stuck, and he pulled harder and harder to no avail. It was almost as if my body had regenerated around the sword, trapping it securely inside.

He stumbled backwards, exclaiming in horror, "What are you?" The man and girl behind him were also taken aback by the scene in front of them.

I yanked the sword from my chest with a shout of agony. The deep gash the sword left behind was evident to everyone present but soon, the wound began to heal until it was as if it had never been there in the first place.

The man tumbled to the ground and trembled in terror.

I gripped the sword tightly and swung it wildly at the man in front of me while screaming maniacally. "Die!" I shouted as the blade cut cleanly through the man's neck and his head flew off and landed on the floor.

Everyone fell silent as the man's lifeless body slumped to the ground, his head still rolling on the sand. Blood pooled around the body, staining the sand and my face a deep crimson. Everyone was in shock, unable to comprehend what had just happened.

I gave the other man a menacing stare as he was taken aback by my sudden glance. He immediately grabbed the girl and put his blade against her throat, causing her to emit an agonizing cry. He shouted, "Come any closer and I'll take her life!"

I suddenly began to sprint towards him at a pace I wouldn't have thought I was capable of as he yelled out again, "Can't you hear me? I said move and she's dead-" Before he finished his last word, my sword had cut through his body, causing his blood to splatter on my hands as his two halves dropped to the ground.

I took in my surroundings, surveying the killing I had just perpetrated. How had I become so powerful? Could it because I had been reincarnated? Why was I not experiencing any regret or remorse for what I had done?

It was as if an outside force had infiltrated my brain when the attacker stabbed me. All I could feel was an intense malice and the desire to end his life. I thought to myself, "There is no other explanation, this must be happening because of my immortality."

The thing that has been sustaining me is gradually eroding my feelings. This is understandable as having an immortal life is equivalent to having an optimal human life. My brain will deem such negative sentiments such as remorse, sorrow, unhappiness or grief as unecessities and remove such feelings.

As I quietly thought to myself, "It's just a speculation though, I may be wrong," I absently rubbed my chin. Then I remembered why I had taken the lives of those men - to save a girl

I glanced over to her and saw that she looked fearful and bewildered. I could sense her shaking. I gently asked her, "Are you all right?"
