Chapter 8 - I ruined our anniversary

The dinner date was set for seven o'clock, it's almost five o'clock and he still has a lot of files on his desk that need his attention. "I can't blow it, this is our first dinner date after the divorce, I might lose my chance of getting her back if I blow today's date." He mumbled to himself.

His secretary entered, his heels clicking on the marble flow in his office, "Boss it's almost time for your dinner meeting with Mr Pattinson's son, they want to know your final say on the proposal."

Maxwell slumped into his seat, he forgot about his CEO act in the company, right now he is in a dilemma. "That meeting was today?"

"Yes sir, don't tell me you forgot about it?" His secretary asked with raised eyebrows.

"What do you think Sasha? I forgot. Cancel it, I have something far more important to handle than this meeting."

"But we can't cancel, you are the one who called this meeting boss, I'm even surprised that you forgot about it. You've been waiting for this and it's here now." Sasha said.

"Tell him I decided to have a second look at the proposal, I'll give him my reply next week. Leave Sasha else you'll be doing the pile of work on this desk."

Sasha humph, he turned, he took angry steps out of the office, the clicking sound of his heels told Maxwell how angry he was. Sasha is the only person who can talk to him how he likes and gets away with it in this office. He is the son of a distant relative, they are close.

"I work my sexy butt every day, I set the meetings but yet you don't honour them, how rude. You are lucky you are my boss and brother and I love you." He dialled the number.

"Ugh, good evening Mr. Pattinson, umm my boss won't be able to make it to today's meeting. You see he decided to give the proposal a second look.... No no no, there's nothing to be worried about, he just wants to make sure that he got everything right... Yes of course.... Right....Okay.... and I'm sorry for cancelling last minute." He slammed the office phone and puffed.

At around six thirty, the door to Maxwell's office opened, "Sasha send the files I'm yet to work on to the house, I'll finish the work at home." He left without giving Sasha the chance to comment on what he said.

By the time he arrived at Morgana's, it was already ten past seven thanks to the traffic jam. He had to call the restaurant to keep their reservation.

"I'm sorry I'm late." He apologized the moment he saw Morgana, she smiled at him.

"I knew you were going to be late, I gave you a watch on our anniversary as a gift. You are never on time."

"I don't know what to say at this point." He mumbled.

She shook her head, typical Maxwell. He is good with business relationships but when it comes to romantic relationships, he is as stiff as a wood. He didn't even compliment her looks, she put in a lot of work to look pretty but he didn't notice it.

"Let's just go."

They got to the restaurant, and a waiter ushered them to their table, "why do we have to come to a fancy restaurant?" She whispered.

"No reason, I just want to have a good meal with you."

A waiter came in and interrupted their conversation, "Have you decided on what you want?"

They placed their orders, and a few minutes later they were served. The meal was great but what made it special was the fact that they were eating together.

"It's too early to go home don't you think?" Maxwell asked.

"It is, what do you have in mind?" Morgana replied.

"Let's take a walk."

Maxwell locked their hands together, they walked down the streets of New York City under the street lights and cold air. Maxwell took off his suit and placed it on her shoulders. "What did you do while you were in Seattle?"

"Nothing, all I did was work. It was hard to get a decent job because I was pregnant but a mall hired me because they needed staff. It was hard to work at first but I got the hang of it, I was one of the best employees. But then my boss decided to send me back to New York, I guess being too good at times isn't good." She laughed.

"I didn't want to come back here because I was scared that you'd take my baby away from me, she is the only family I have left I didn't want to lose her. But I stayed here for five months and not once did I run into you, it was perfect. Not until that brat decided to make a scene."

"So you weren't planning on coming back here?" He asked.

"I wasn't, I wanted a life away from you." She replied honestly.

They were silent for a while but didn't stop walking. "What were you doing at the mall by the way?" Morgana breaks the silence.

"I was going through the mall's reviews, and I saw a picture of your back, so I decided to confirm if it was you. When I got there I heard you talking to Miss Anderson and then she pushed you, I rushed and caught you on time and that's when I noticed that you were heavily gone."

"It came as a shock to me honestly and I felt a span of guilt too, I didn't just send you out of the house that night but I sent our baby out too." His face formed into a frown, with distress lines on his forehead.

Morgana stopped him, she stood in front of him and soothed his face with her thumb, "There's no reason to be sad, it's not your fault Max, you were overwhelmed with the information you received. You were blinded by the evidence."

"That doesn't change the fact that I ruined our anniversary, I divorced you on our fucking anniversary M. What if something bad had happened to you that night? I wouldn't be able to forgive myself." He hung his head in shame and sadness.
