Dad and Carlos run into the kitchen standing behind me, seeing the scene unfold in front of their eyes with me.
"Sophia!"
Dad cried out, running towards Mum.
"Dad, no!"
I called out, trying to stop him but it was no use as he continued to bolt over toward her and the stranger on top of her, still digging into her flesh like a dog eating.
Dad grabbed the first thing he saw on the kitchen counter which was a cutting board. He then ran outside and smashed the corner of the board against the person's head multiple times, portions of their skull visible and blood streaming out of the open wound in his head. I don't think that guy is gonna come back after that! 'Euck!'
"Dad, we have to go!"
I cried out, Loona stood at the front door barking and whimpering in fear and stress as she scratched the front door, not daring to go anywhere near Mum.
Dad silently mourned Mum's death, giving her a kiss on her forehead before getting up and running inside, chucking the cutting board to the side.
I hear the terrified screeches of Tiki as she flies around in her cage, her wings hitting the walls of the cage as she panics, knowing that we're all in distress.
"Quickly grab whatever you can, I'm gonna start the car, then we get the hell out of here."
Dad ordered, grabbing the keys to our car parked in the street in front of our house.
I grabbed Loona's collar and quickly put it on her before running to my room, snatching my bag off the hook, and throwing my shoes on as fast as I could. I grab a homemade bead decoration that I made with my Dad a few weeks ago. I quickly tie it to my hair, wanting to keep every memory I could of my life before all this and my family.
"Hurry up, we gotta get the hell out of here!"
Carlos shouted from downstairs.
"Coming!"
I jump up and run down the stairs and outside. The whole area was chaos with people yelling, running, and others getting in their cars racing to get out of the state, maybe even the country if they all wanted to.
"Let's go, now!"
Dad said, helping, me, Carlos, and Loona in the car.
"Wait- I have one thing I need to do!"
I say, looking back at the house and back towards Dad.
"We don't have time, come on!"
I ignore Dad and run out of the car and into the house again. I spot Tiki's cage in the corner and I rush over, unlock the cage door, and push her to step up on my finger, not caring if it was right or not, I can't leave Tiki to die in here, living off seeds and water which will run out in no time and get dirty!
"I'm sorry Tiki, but it's not safe here anymore... You have to fly, get out of this bad place!"
I desperately say to her, hoping that Tiki understands. I put my hand outside the window and watch as Tiki chirps loudly before flying away into the distance. I look around quickly to make sure there are none of those zombies around, but I pause for a moment, realizing something.
"Where's Mum..?"
I quietly ask myself, looking down at where she had been mauled to death in front of my eyes, she wasn't there anymore, only a trail of blood remained and the dead person Dad had murdered laid on the ground, unmoving.

I hear the floor squeak and creak behind me and I turn around, seeing her mutilated corpse reanimated and limping towards me from in the kitchen on the ground. I thought she was supposed to be dead-dead when bitten like that, how is she right there?!
I let out a scream at the sight, seeing blood still pouring from the missing chunk in her throat, human 'claw' marks on her yellow shirt along with the blood-soaked into its soft fabric, and just as I thought things couldn't get worse, it just did. Mum tried to say something, or perhaps just make a sound, but all that came out was a gurgle and more blood spitting out from her open throat and mouth.
Not having time to react properly, I ran past Mum and out of the house then I quickly jumped into the car, screaming at Dad to drive as I stared back at the house.
As Dad starts to drive I can't stop thinking about seeing Mum crawling on the ground like that, looking as if a bear with rabies just attacked her, and she got the rabies! One side of me was glad that Dad didn't come inside when I screamed, but the other side of me thought that it was terrifying to be there alone seeing Mum like that, and it was.
Dad slams his foot on the gas, not giving me enough time to put my seatbelt on.
"The news wasn't lying! We're all going to fucking die–"
Carlos said, interrupted by Dad.
"Don't start! We are getting out of this city before they bomb the whole place or we get our ass bit by one of them."
I look outside the window as we drive, my hands shaking and my eyes wide as If I had witnessed a ghost walking by. Well, I suppose I sort of did. I stayed silent, a lump in my throat as the memory of Mum being mauled to death in front of my eyes repeats in my head over and over, I just can't shake that feeling off!
"What are we going to do?"
I ask, my eyes still wide in shock and fear as I turn my head to face Carlos and Dad.
"Why did this have to happen? Everything was fine just an hour ago, now look at this shit of a town!"
Carlos whined, clearly in a state of panic and frustration, surprisingly worse than me.
"You need to relax alright? I'm driving here unless you wanna take the wheel?"
Dad hissed, turning his head around. My eyes widen at the sight not so far away, I see on the highway a bunch of cars piled around, some stacked on top of each other at an angle, and others with massive dents and scratches, the highway was blocked off completely!
"Dad, the road!"
I screamed, pointing at the blockage in front, but it was already too late to warn him. I hold Loona as tight as I can as Dad crashes into a car, our vehicle spinning out of control before flying off the highway and into the environment below.
