We approach the gates of my school, the whole school is protected by the large metal gate and the tall fence stretched around to make sure nobody could sneak out or get in, almost like a prison. I guess that'll be really useful in this situation.
"Here, I'll give you a boost up."
Carlos offered. I accept, wiping the tears from my eyes and cheek.
"Okay."
I step on his hand and jump up as he lifts me up and over the fence. I grab onto the top of the fence, carefully climbing up and jumping down. I walk towards the gate and shake it roughly. Seeing it still won't open I look back to Carlos.
"Go look for something to break the lock on it."
I nod and begin to scout around the area outside the front of the school for anything. I manage to find a brick and I carry it back with both hands. Once I reach the gate I raise the brick and start hammering down on the lock before it breaks apart, unlocking the gate and it opens with a deafening screech.
"Tada!"
I say, throwing the brick into the grass as I spread my arms out as if I had just done a magic trick.
"Alright, alright, good job, you did something good in life."
I narrowed my eyes at Carlos, crossing my arms before sighing and continuing to follow him. As we open the door to the office, two kids spring out of the corner with a green marker drawn on their faces, stickers, and in their hands some sort of sling-shot item made from paddle pop sticks and a lastic.
"Freeze!"
One of them shouted, aiming his slingshot at Carlos, a small paper ball ready to be launched. I watch as the boy fires the slingshot at him, the paper ball raging through the air, fire blazing behind it as it zooms through the air and punches him in the chest.
Alright, maybe it wasn't that awesome, but that's how I imagined it!
As the paper ball flies out of the slingshot, it lands in front of Carlos's shoes, barely making it past the open doors.
Carlos stares at the young boy disappointedly and unamused before he closes the door behind him, walking inside.
"Daniel?"
I say, looking at the other boy on the right. I recognize him from earlier today in class. At least there's one familiar face out here.
"Come on, stop playing with your toys. Violet, you know these guys, get them to... I don't know, man."
Carlos paused briefly, not exactly having a plan on what to do. Loud banging can be heard outside as a zombie attempts to break into the school through the fence, their hands clawing the metal bars and face rubbing against it uselessly. They must've heard the gate. The saddest part is that I can still reconsige the people who have been converted into those 'creatures', and one day I'll probably have to kill people who I know...
"Aha, we need to re-enforce this place. I know we're moving quickly, but I've seen enough movies to know that we have to build a fortress or at least upgrade this place so they can't get in."
Carlos declared. I guess his stupid games were actually pretty useful.
"But Miss told us to stay in the classroom and lock the doors!"
"Listen, you do as I say unless you want to end up like one of them. I know that this is difficult for you two, but-"
The two boys looked at each other before sprinting down the hall and upstairs. I sigh and look back at Carlos, waiting for his response.
"Let's just go, it's not worth trying to run after them."
Carlos says to me, shaking his head slightly.
"You know this school better than I do, lead the way to er, wherever we could find something useful for boarding this place up I suppose. Haven't been here in years."
Carlos says his last sentence guietly, glancing around at all the pictures on the walls. I accept and begin to walk Carlos to the outdoor shed in the playground. Large spiderwebs blocked our path, the shed being attacked by flies and other insects. I look back to Carlos, silently begging he doesn't make me go.
"Well, it's only fit for one person."
He states, looking down at me and back at the shed.
"You!"
I say to him, lightly pushing his arm toward the shed, however, he doesn't budge.
"Nuh-uh, I'm not going there! You're small and... Clever, I guess."
Carlos excused, pushing me towards the shed forcefully.
I groan and get down on my knees, slowly and carefully crawling my way to the Shed, avoiding the spiderwebs and any insects I come across.
I pause, feeling something slimy and cold on my hand. I look down, seeing a slug making its way onto my finger.
"Eugh! get it off, get it off!"
I shrieked, flicking my hand and the slug being sent flying before landing in a grass patch nearby. I could hear Carlos laughing already, such a jerk!
"Don't laugh! I'll throw it at you."
I threatened jokingly, reaching my hand out towards the slug, gently scooping it up from the ground and I aimed in his direction, however, I didn't throw it, even if I did it probably wouldn't get so far before turning into a pancake as it hits the ground.
"Right, remind me to never make fun of you again when you're crawling through the dirt with slugs."
I roll my eyes and flick the slug off my hand, continuing to crawl through before standing up, finally in front of the shed. I pry open the doors with my hands, loud screeching and creaking emitting from the door as it slows revealing what's inside the shed.
I go inside, though it is quite dark. I spot some cricket bats which will probably be useful for defense, some bouncy balls, a net, hoops, a rake, and those poles you run through like in those dog shows you see on TV. I start to reel it out of the shed, putting it all in a pile. I pick up the bat and look towards Carlos, an idea sparking in my mind of getting to him quicker.
"Stand back!"
I call out, grabbing the cricket bat and holding it up as if I were about to hit a ball. Carlos takes a few steps to the side, watching me. I squint my eyes as I run through the path I took, throwing the bat around in the air, the bat taking down any webs and spiders in the way with ease.
I make it to Carlos before quickly throwing the bat on the ground a few feet away, a bunch of spiders crawling around it on what used to be their webs. I quickly wipe my hands on my jumper, making sure that no spiders got to me.
"Well, that's one way to get through I guess."
