Dark shadows clutched at Rachael's legs like arms. They did not allow her to move a single inch. Rachael was stuck in place and then dragged toward Terry's body.

Rook sounded annoyed but satisfied at the same time. He finally had Rachael where he wanted her to be. And this time, he would not let Racheal go this easily.
He placed a hand on Rachael's face and started his initial magic-absorption.
It was slow, most likely because Rachael did not have enough magic inside her. She had not awakened, so most of her magic was sealed. To extract it, Rook needed to break the seal on her magic.
The reason most humans awakened around 11-12 years of age was that their bodies were only able to handle the intensity of their magic once they were old enough.
Prematurely awakening magic could have dire consequences as well as stunned growth. But Rook did not care about that.
