Evelyn spent the remainder of the morning reading from the herbology text. She had just gotten to the letter M when there was a knock on the door of the cottage.

 

"Miss Evelyn," Alexander called out to her. "The maid has brought your lunch."

 

Evelyn opened the door and let him in. Alexander's large body felt even larger in the small space. She cleared of a section of the worktable for him to place the basket down on. She smiled politely and thanked him. 

 

Not one for many words, Alexander nodded in appreciation and left, closing the cottage door behind her. 

 

There was a small note on the basket:

Dear Evelyn, I will be out handling business with Michael. I may not make it back in time for dinner. Remember what I told you this morning.

Love, Father.
