Evelyn was glad that the night was finally over. Her father still had not shown up, but it was now acceptable for her and Peggy to leave the party. They had danced twice, but no one seemed to notice that the girls barely left their chairs. Even Lacey, who usually begged them to join her was far too busy dealing with potential suitors to notice. The girls exited the ballroom and as they made their way up the staircase they spotted their father just ahead of them.
"Father," Evelyn called out.
Her father turned around to take in the sight of his daughters behind him. He stopped on the stairs, " Evelyn, follow me to my room," he said and then continued to climb the stairs.
Peggy gave Evelyn a look and she just shrugged her shoulders in response. It would appear that her suspicion that the meeting tonight was about her was correct if her father was asking for her this late in the evening.
