Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Awakening

I had no idea what any of these messages actually meant, but from what I could infer, they seemed to be my things about me. But why did it taste that my age was twelve?

Currently, I was still in the whitespace, which was actually literally white. I looked around for some time, even bothering to walk about a little yet as expected, I could not find anything.

I took another look at the barely opaque dark red screen hovering in front of my field of perception. It had not changed since.

Age: Twelve.

Race: Human.

Power levels:

Vitality: 100

Magic Essence: 10

Strength: 3

Agility: 1

Dexterity: 1

Intelligence: 1

Stamina: 1

I took a good look at this screen and thought about it for some time. 'Vitality should be my health, right? Magic essence. How big is ten anyway? It should be pretty big, seeing as my agility and the like are only at one.'

'Strength is at three. Hold on, is this like a universal measurement of all my skills? With this I could probably know who and who not to fight. This is good, very good.'

'Alright, how do I get back now?' I questioned myself in my mind. I was surprised to actually receive an answer, though I wasn't the one who answered the question.

Do you currently wish to wake up?

Yes. No.

'Wake up? Yes.'

Confirmed. Awaking User. Success.

Immediately, my vision twirled and that white environment disappeared, leaving a blinding light which forced me to close my eyes.

The next time I opened my eyes, I was staring up at a ceiling of a luxurious building, quite unlike my cabin which I'd lived in for the past five years.

'Where am I?' I sat up slowly and took a look around the room. The room was spacious with a large door, where a young boy about twelve or thirteen years old was stood. I wasn't concerned about this boy's age, because I felt a sense of deja vu when I looked at this face.

I focused a little bit more on this face. My pupils turned vertical upon realising who exactly this person was. The shock I felt was... indescribable.

'How... How is this possible? Was all of that a dream?' After thinking this, something immediately popped up in my vision, it was a dark red colour.

A new tab has been unlocked. Do you wish to see it?

Yes. No.

I was currently a bit confused by this, and as it kept me busy, I had no idea when the person stood by the door reached me.

"Hey, Jay. Is there a problem? You are looking a bit pale this morning." he said.

"Alphonso..." I muttered softly. "Is it really you?"

For five years, my family had been dead, but I never mourned this loss. The one person I did miss though was my close friend, Alphonso - the butler's son. He was the only one who called me Jay. From this, I could tell it was likely that this was real. To finally see my childhood friend after so many years, surely I would be moved to tears.

"Huh? Why are you crying? Did I say something?" The way he still carried me like his little brother moved my heart. I did not realise how much I had missed him until now. I sniffed as I used my sleeves to clean my tears. Then I replied with a beaming smile like some little baby who just got his favourite candy.

"I'm fine. It's just... I had a bad dream." I muttered.

"Oh. Don't scare me so next time, okay?"

"Scare you? How did that scare you?"

"Doesn't matter. Just... just get dressed. Your father wouldn't like you to be late, you know?"

"Ah, yes..." We always had breakfast together every morning of every day in my home, and Father never really tolerated lateness. Said it was 'unbecoming' of a noble. I had nearly forgotten about this little detail myself. If it had not been for Alphonso reminding me, I certainly would have not recalled this bit of information.

Alphonso finally turned around and walked out of the room. I sent him off with my eyes and sighed once he had left the room and closed the door behind him. Focusing my vision once more, that dark red screen was still there. I had briefly ignored it after Alphonso came sneaking up on me.

A question lingered on the screen waiting to be answered.

A new tab has been unlocked. Do you wish to see it?

Yes. No.

'New tab, huh? Must be that Skills stuff that was unlocked a little while ago. Yes, open the new tab.' Everything on the dark red screen automatically swiped leftward to reveal a blank dark red screen with a gift symbol on it.

You have been gifted a new skill by the ImMortal System. Do you wish to open the gift?

Yes. No.

'A gift? I wonder what it would be. Yes, open it.'

Gift received.

User has acquired a new skill: Last Fortress.

'Last Fortress. What does it do?'

Last Fortress: This skill will allow the user to stand strong and keep fighting no matter how fatal his injuries are for 30 seconds.

Requirements: To use this skill, Vitality must be 10 or lower.

'Oh, so like a skill that helps me escape death narrowly. Good, good. If this system thing is really applicable in real life, then I will certainly have been blessed by the gods themselves. 'Ugh... except I'll have to stare at this wretched screen forever. Is there any way to remove this screen?'

Does User wish to overlook the System screen?

Yes. No.

'Huh. It seems you can be a blessing sometimes. Yes.' The screen soon disappeared from my view, but not before leaving a few words.

If User wishes to interact with System, all he needs to do is call for the System with his mind.

After reading this, the screen finally disappeared. I slowly stood up and stretched my bones. The cracking sounds emitted from them sounded to me as though I was hearing music, music that told me I was alive, and so was my life of luxury.

I strode to an adjoined room to take a bath. Being late to the dining table was not going to be something on my agenda anytime soon. After all, it had been a long time since I had a scrumptious meal, having lived an awful, realistic five years and whatnot. Thinking of all these would surely give me a migraine, so I put them all at the back of my mind and decided to enjoy my life. Besides, I had no idea how long it would last, no?
