Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Two beasts killed

The two beasts stared fiercely and intensely at each other as they prepared to go head on. Suddenly, they both shot out at the same time; intending to inflict fatal damage. The bear beast pushed out it's paw in its attack, while the wolf shaped beast dived headfirst with its mouth as it's means of attack.

'The bear is clearly going to win this offensive. The wolf has a strong jaw, but its attack is not guaranteed to hit. The bear, however, can adjust its aim to hit anywhere on the wolf's body.' While thinking this, though, the wolf twisted its body in a strange manner while it was still in the air.

Its surprise assault caught me, and apparently, the bear unawares. Said bear received the full brunt of its bite after the paw missed. The bear's shoulder was separated from a very good chunk, causing its right arm to remain dangling. The loud wail from the bear also signified that it had clearly been badly injured.

The wolf didn't pass up on this chance to inflict even more damage. It pounced right off the bat with its jaws wide open once again. The bear seeing this, still retained some kind of instinct. It sidestepped the wolf and, using its left hand, clawed viciously at the wolf's side. The wolf, which wasn't expecting such a move, fell for the trap and obtained a few deep claw marks on its left side.

The wolf fell on its side and yowled in pain. The bear used this chance to smash at the already weakened wolf. Compared to the bear, the wolf clearly had the advantage of speed - clearly, it IS a wolf, no? The bear however, had the upper hand when it came to brute strength. Hence, if this punch were to land on the wolf, there was the chance the wolf would not like the outcome.

But what did I know? They were after all, animals. Who knew what they could like and what they could not like? Moreover, if one were to die while the other came out seriously injured, that would benefit my plan, right? I mean, it would certainly give me an easier time finishing off the survivor.

During the time I took to think of all this, the punch from the bear landed. The wolf whimpered and managed to get up amid that frightening force that threatened to tear even the rocks in the cave. It sprung to its feet in a mighty energetic manner and immediately bolted, aiming to make its escape. Seemed like its survival instincts had finally kicked in.

However, the bear wasn't stupid enough to let its prey walk out free. It pounced on the wolf fiercely and began to unleash a flurry of punches. Clearly, it knew that a little slip-up would be unacceptable, so it had subdued the wolf with its superior and terrifying strength.

The wolf, seeing that it had clearly lost this round and it was unlikely for it to keep its little life after this, became mad and rabid. It began to clip away with its teeth, uncaring what it was clipping at. It would, at some point, get a part of the bear's body and refuse to let go; causing the bear to temporarily divert its attention. However, it was not able to keep up its little act for too long.

Eventually, the wolf saw that it had been completely overwhelmed with absolutely nothing it could do, so it gave out its last howl, its snout pointed in the direction of the sky. The bear, having obtained victory, fell to its stomach and closed its eyes. I could tell it was still alive by the ragged breathing emitted from its nostrils with a tremendous amount of force.

I waited about thirty minutes to be sure the bear was asleep before walking out stealthily to observe the situation. Blood was splattered everywhere. I moved slowly and sneakily towards the battle arena where both magical beasts currently lay, steeling my resolve and renewing my determination as I went.

'This is a perfectly good chance. I must kill the magical beast with this chance that was clearly a gift.' I thought to myself.

New quest received.

Two low-level magical beasts have had a big fight that have brought them both to the brink of death. Stealthily end their lives.

Reward: ???

Penalty upon failure: Death.

'A new quest?' It seemed as though anytime I wanted to do something extra significant, this system always gave it to me as a quest. Why this was, I had no idea. I knit my brows as I read the rest part of the quest info. 'Both to the brink... end their lives... Does this mean that the both of them are still alive? Oh, crap. This is still going to be troublesome.'

Having already steeled my resolve, and walked in between both magical beasts, it would be a waste to go back now. Plus, I had to risk in order to get rewards, right? I quietly unsheathed a dagger I had bought while leaving the marketplace today. It was nothing fancy, just a couple intricate designs and all. This not-so-fancy dagger however was quite expensive. It was reasonable seeing as it had a magical beast core embedded in it. Don't know what that is? I'll fill you in later.

Anyway, because of the beast core, the weapon gained a basic special skill - Vampire. It had the ability to drain the blood of whomever was stabbed with it - all the blood - thereby killing said person, or whatever else as long as the skill was activated. It however required a lot of magic essence to use - a lot for me anyway.

I moved toward the more energetic bear-like beast and hacked at its neck while activating the skill on the dagger. The crystal on it gave off a cold glint for a split-second and the dagger went through the bear's neck like butter. As it moved however, the blood from the bear agglomerated and moved into the crystal on the dagger.

Skill Vampire used.

This was why I didn't want to use the skill on the dagger so easily. It consumed 70% of all my magic essence in one go. Losing all of one's magic essence would make a person faint. I certainly didn't wish for such a fate in such a place.

Without wasting anymore time, I turned to the barely alive wolf-like beast and hacked at its neck without joy, never stopping until I saw the familiar system screen pop up again.
