Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Vow

I stood there, surrounded by the triumphant mages, my newfound strength dwindling as their wicked smiles grew wider. I had struck down their leader, Hans, but their collective power still overwhelmed me. The threat of their dark magic clawed at the edges of my mind, and I realized that the odds were not in my favor.

As the older squad member raised his hand, crackling with the same sinister energy that had once enslaved me, my heart sank. It was as if a looming darkness threatened to snuff out the last glimmers of my defiance. He wore a sinister grin, anticipating my inevitable defeat.

But then, something extraordinary happened. It was as if a bolt of lightning struck my mind, sending shivers through my very being. An inexplicable force reached out and touched my consciousness, bypassing spoken words and transmitting directly to my thoughts.

My eyes widened in surprise, and I clenched my fists in confusion and disbelief. The mages surrounding me paused for a brief moment, as if they sensed a change in the air, their wicked smiles faltering.

Jason, if you wish to survive and claim the power you deserve, you must remember to honor your vow. With it, you can become more powerful than you've ever imagined.

The voice echoed in my mind, leaving me both startled and intrigued. There was an uncanny familiarity to it, like a long-lost memory resurfacing. Yet, it held an undeniable allure, a promise of strength beyond my wildest dreams.

If I had gone mad, I didn't know. This was naturally impossible. For one to just immediately begin hearing voices in their head. But I'd heard - oh, what I hadn't heard - that the gods could surely do  impossible things. If this was one of the gods providing me help, thank my lucky stars. But if this wasn't a god, I mean, who else could it be anyway? Who would have an allure for what I had vowed to give up?

Inwardly, I hesitated. There was an enigmatic promise concealed in those words, one that could alter my fate. The vow I had made during my momentary empowerment remained shrouded in mystery, but it had come at a price.

"Hey, are you all right?" Geoffrey's voice cut through the tumult of my thoughts. He observed the conflict playing out on my face, clearly baffled by my sudden change in demeanor.

"Shut up, why would you worry about the enemy?!" The old man from before angrily scolded him.

In response, I took a deep breath and made a quick, secret decision. It was a leap of faith into the unknown, driven by my yearning for power and the desperate need for survival. In the depth of my thoughts, I silently agreed with the mysterious telepathic voice.

"I remember. I will honor the vow.'

A surge of energy rippled through me, reigniting the flame of power within. My entire being felt electrified, and the world around me seemed to slow down. Colors intensified, and sounds sharpened. I sensed a newfound strength building within me, as if a dormant part of my essence had awakened.

With my determination ablaze, I unleashed this newfound power. An aura of light enveloped me, a radiant brilliance that cast aside the darkness that had once imprisoned me. The mages recoiled, shielding their eyes from the overwhelming radiance.

"He's... he's changed," one of the squad members stammered, struggling to comprehend the sudden transformation.

Geoffrey, who had been mid-incantation, was thrown backward by a surge of energy. He gasped in awe, realizing that I was now on a different plane of power.

With newfound resolve and strengthened abilities, I moved with astonishing swiftness, attacking the mages one by one. The landscape blurred as I struck them down, one after another. They had little time to react, their earlier arrogance replaced by expressions of terror and confusion.

Geoffrey attempted to stand his ground, launching rocks with his earth gift. Yet, I effortlessly shattered the projectiles with my empowered fists. I closed the distance between us and delivered a resounding punch that sent him crashing into a tree, rendering him unconscious.

The remaining squad members quickly grasped that they were outmatched. Panic and desperation consumed them as they fled in disarray, disappearing into the depths of the forest. I had achieved victory, not through brute force alone but by unlocking a reservoir of power beyond my comprehension.

I stood alone amidst the aftermath of my triumph, my body pulsating with energy. As I gazed at my hands, I marveled at the brilliant light that enveloped me. I had made a silent commitment, remembered a vow, and in return, I had become something extraordinary.

Although I didn't fully comprehend the nature of the power I now possessed, it was evident that I had evolved into something far greater than a mere mage. My transformation was both exhilarating and daunting, as I sensed the untapped depths of my potential.

The telepathic voice returned, gently echoing in my thoughts, You've made the right choice, Jason. Embrace your newfound power, and you will achieve great things. Now, it is time to leave.

Guided by the telepathic presence, I knew that I was not alone. An enigmatic force had awakened within me, and the path to my escape had become clear. With renewed determination, I ventured deeper into the forest, leaving behind the remnants of the battle and the limitations of my old self.

Looking around me, the forest seemed to resonate with my feelings as the trees swayed happily and the leaves danced to the tune of the wind in an extremely gentle manner. Finally, I was free, and I would remain free. But some worry still lingered a the back of my mind. It was about the vow I had made. This unknown entity wanted me to honour my vow, which meant they had something to gain from it.

'Which powerful being wouldn't... ' I laughed at myself, 'when I vowed to give up my very soul on a platter of gold?'
