Chapter 9 - Attendant

"Are you alright?" I asked her, seeing she was back to shaking again. Frankly I wondered how that black cat she was still holding was able to bear it.

"C-can we see him s-some other t-time…" Luna said, back to violent stuttering.

"Why?" I asked bluntly. She wanted to come here and get a job but kept trying to chicken out, as lazy as I was in my current and past lives I at least had a backbone. Though it often went unused.

"W-Well I…" As Luna tried to come up with an excuse my fathers voice pierced through the door like a banshee.

"I've waited for you two to come in for five minutes now! Hurry up!"

"Ah. His senses are pretty strong…" I couldn't help but comment as I pushed open the door and dragged Luna in by the hand.

"So my son. I trust you have a reason for dragging a random child here." My father spoke as soon as we entered, his hands resting in front of him as he scrutinized us both under his gaze.

"I just found her. She said she was looking for a job. Then she said that she heard nobles would hire anyone who activates their core before the age of ten. She's activated her core, and she's under 10. So. I brought her here." I summarized.

"I see. Then step outside for a moment while I speak to her." My father answered and I felt Luna's grip on my hand tighten.

"You can try but she's reached new heights of timidness in this world so I don't think you'll be very productive." I argued.

"So she's useless?" My father asked.

"Honestly… yes." I admitted.

"You're not putting up a strong argument here." My father said blankly.

"You've already made a decision so I'm not bothering with the argument." I said.

"Why do you say that?"

"My guts."

"Elaborate."

"No."

"..." My fathers eye was visibly twitching and a vein vaguely seemed to pop on his forehead.

"Well, I'm willing to hire her as your attendant."

"No."

"..." The vein that was slightly popping out of my fathers forehead suddenly became more pronounced.

"Dammit! Listen to your father!" My father yelled as he threw a massive book at me, with acceleration I was able to catch it pretty easily with my free hand… I wasn't able to do the same for the one person sofa that came a moment later though.

"Ah!" Luna yelped as we were suddenly separated as I was hit across the room from the force of the sofa.

"I'm okay." I said a moment later from under the sofa, raising my hand and giving a thumbs up.

"Kid, are you willing to take the job?" I heard my father ask as I used physical enhancement to throw off the sofa and get to my feet.

"A-uh-um. Y-yes…" Luna quickly said after a few moments.

I sighed. Even if she was timid, from what I knew she could still be trained into an exceptionally powerful knight or even a mage if she had the talent. Why waste it by making her my attendant, or did my father just judge she would be useless at fighting.

Hopefully, this wouldn't affect my sleep at all.

"What a horrible day." I complained.

"Is it?" Luna asked from beside me, wearing a black and white maids uniform with a short skirt for the summer heat. Thinking about it I kinda regretted it now that I was outside since I was wearing a white shirt under a red and gold coat with long gray pants that didn't help with the weather.

The black cat that used to stick with Luna was nowhere to be seen as of recently, though I didn't worry since she never brought it up.

"Any day I have to go out is a bad day. Any day I have to do work is a worse day." I responded as I dragged my feet through town.

"You must have a lot of bad days." Luna responded uninterestedly. She wasn't fully confident, but at least with me she had started getting sassy and generally harder to deal with. I wondered if it was too late to fire her since she would become rather troublesome to shoo away if she kept going at this rate.

"Don't you know it…" I responded as we neared our destination.

"Perhaps it would be better if you took off the coat?"

"No. It's my favorite coat. I won't take it off even if I have a stroke."

"For someone whose goal in life is to sleep all day you sure have some strange goals."

"Not as strange as a girl who wears thigh highs in summer."

"I don't like the breeze."

"Wear tights."

"My salary can't afford them."

"Aren't they the same thing?"

"No. The thigh highs are made of the same fabric as everything else and go for 40 to 60 iron. Tights are made of stretchy silk from plants native to the west which require intensive amounts of hard labor. Since the nation's against slavery, plus the transport cost, it drives the price to about 8 mythril."

"Isn't your salary like 10 mythril a month?"

"I have other things I need to buy. A bottle of ink costs 1 mythril and lasts me about 8 days of writing in my diary. So each month I spend up to 4 mythril on ink alone. More if I want to take notes on magic formations and spells, which I do a lot."

"When was ink so expensive?"

"You don't write much and just get it handed to you by someone when you do, of course you don't know how expensive it is."

"Well still, you get food and accommodations provided, you can just save up for two or three months right?"

"I have better things to buy. Like mana stones to help increase my core capacity. 3 mythril each. Also, the fabric is difficult to wash, so I can't be bothered."

"..." Today, I learnt a lot about Luna and random clothes… I should probably talk to her more… Eh… If I need to know something I'll just ask her. Who can be bothered talking.
