"How are you, Henry?" the foreman asked.
Henry and Felicia were at the entrance of the mine's job site. The miners had stopped working and stood some distance behind the foreman and Dunzel.
"I'm already fine." Henry nodded his head.
"Is that so? Then, you two… take care. The world is a big place. May we meet again!"
The miners behind raised their voices and chanted at the same time, "May we meet again!"
Their words turned into a rumbling sound.
Henry nodded his head at them while Felicia bowed. They turned their heads and left.
The silhouettes of the two left the vision of the people in the mines. It was a scene they would never forget. The two only spent eight days, but they left a deep mark in their minds.
One was a great cook, and the other was a great worker. Additionally, they were also mother and son.
Henry didn't look back. Felicia, on the other hand, kept looking back. A sad look was on her face.
"I thought you didn't want to work there?" Henry joked, seeing the look on her face.
"I only cooked!" Felicia answered poutingly.
"Hahahahaha!"
The duo ignored the blazing sun. Unlike before, they now had the means to cool themselves. They returned to the city center, and the people were still the same.
They entered the City Hall and walked to the guild hall where the City Guild was located.
A familiar face was behind the registration desk. She looked up instinctively and saw the silhouette of the duo.
A smile formed on her face. She knew the two had become miners, so she wasn't surprised they had returned safely. Indeed, as long as they didn't pick dangerous requests, they would not die.
Henry didn't look at her. He and Felicia went to the requests board and picked a new request.
"Protecting people?" Felicia read the paper out loud.
"Yes. Look at who we're protecting."
Henry pointed at the requester.
"Royal Magic Academy!"
Felicia was surprised.
There was also a requirement in the fine print. Only magi could accept the request.
Magi would rarely appear in this city, so the request was not accepted by anyone.
They walked to the requests desk and submitted the form saying they completed their previous one and then handed the new one while at the same time having to cast a simple spell to prove they were magi.
After a while, Henry received a new folder containing the next request. This time, they had to wait for two days when the group would leave.
The person also gave them a small bag filled with gold coins.
He passed it to Felicia, who opened it and smiled widely.
"We have money!"
"Mm. We can splurge a bit," Henry replied.
The foreman properly compensated Henry and Felicia. He was a good man, and Henry's impression of him became even better.
Felicia didn't disagree. The two found a hotel and booked a room.
The days quickly passed.
During the day, Henry would give her magic lessons, and at night, he would make her create shapes with her mana in order to help her become better at controlling it.
Those casual days ended, and early in the morning, they arrived at the meeting place for the job. A caravan was waiting for them.
There were also other magi there. All of them had solemn looks on their faces.
When they saw the two approaching, they all turned in surprise.
"You're so young? Are you really a magus?" one of them asked.
It was incredible seeing such a young magus.
Henry didn't waste any time with them and waved his hand. A bright flame formed and subtly faded away.
"You didn't chant too! What is a talented freak doing here…"
The others were similarly startled.
"Is it that hard?" Henry asked with furrowed eyebrows.
He ignored them and looked around.
"Ah, right! You're here to help protect the new recruits??" a middle-aged man asked frantically.
He was among the startled, and he hurriedly walked up to them.
Henry passed him the paper. The man read it for a bit then looked up. He glanced at Felicia behind Henry.
"She's a magus too?"
"Yes," Felicia replied, waving her hand, imitating Henry's previous spell.
Her flame was much smaller and lasted shorter, but it still caused a ruckus among the other magi.
"What the fuck?" one of them said.
"I-I'm Gratus. It seems like you two are talented."
Gratus looked them up and down. Their clothing was casual and appeared like they were villagers.
When Henry's clothing was burnt, he got a new one from Dunzel, who was more than happy to give him spare clothing. Unsurprisingly, that clothing was what villagers wore.
Gratus immediately felt that these two were hiding themselves. They must be powerful figures from a foreign land.
After all, it was complicated to cast a spell without chanting. Only those of a higher class could manage it as easily as they did.
Gratus respectfully led them to a carriage behind the three leading ones. He lowered his head and didn't dare look into Henry's and Felicia's eyes. He feared that he would cause a misunderstanding.
Henry was a bit stunned inwardly when he realized that these people were reacting so much for such a casual thing. In his previous life, even little kids could wave their hands to cast spells.
It was the norm of that era. The rarity were those who would chant. And most of the time, those people had easily lost to their opponents.
Henry took note of this event. Next time, he would chant in order not to attract attention. After all, he was from the past. He didn't know this world anymore. What he knew couldn't be applied to the present.
Meanwhile, Felicia was grinning widely. A feeling of success spread over her body. She kept it at the minimum because she still remembered that she had more to learn, but it was impossible for her to stop her happiness from overspilling.
She led a life of misery and struggle. Being successful naturally filled her with joy.
"We're leaving!" Gratus shouted outside, and the carriages moved forward with the help of the horses.
