Chereads / Survivors of The Second World / Chapter 9 - Green Blood

Chapter 9 - Green Blood

Karen woke up with the sound of rain hitting the roof of the house. The rain was so heavy that one had to shout at someone to be heard. Although this town suffered because of radiation, it was receiving heavy rain for an unknown reason. It did not have anything special because there wasn't much human habitation here, but the locals called it the 'Dessert of Rain'. Because of the nuclear effect of its flora was very little despite this much rainfall.

Karen had heard from a traveler he met in 2nd city that there was an untouched library in an abandoned city here. He had changed continents just for this rumor. The group, who learned that Karen was going to a new place, gathered, and followed him, even those in the organization...

"At this rate, the dam will overflow," said James (Karen's best friend who rivaled on speed in first chapter.). As they descended the hill opposite the dam, the other eight turned to look at it. They decided to wait for a while where they were. If something unusual would happen, they might need to help the villagers.

Nina "I heard from the locals that the dam is almost two hundred and fifty years old. I hope it carries the water." said and broke the silence. The village was one of three settlements here and was the closest to the aforementioned abandoned city. So, the group was staying here.

According to the old map in Karen's hand, their destination was about ten kilometers away. If they kept going on before the rain stopped, they might not be able to help the village if something bad happened. However, according to what villagers heard, the rains this year broke records and it had been raining continuously for ninety-six days.

Monro (Guy got punched by Amy in first chapter) was observing the dam with his binoculars to check its state. He predicted that if the rain continued like this, the dam would overflow in two days at the latest if the dam did not collapse.

A maniac and his nine crazy friends who came to find a book from the old world in this rain decided to wait for a while on this little desert hill. They could not be seen far from the color of their raincoats and the weight of the air. In fact, they all looked like rocks.

After a while, the silence was broken by Monro, who got up excitedly with his binoculars. He excitedly said that the dam was leaking water and was about to collapse. To confirm Monro, Jessica bereaved the binoculars from his hand and began to look at the dam. "Yeah, the dam is collapsing, we better do something guys, or else the village will be flooded."

Abraham (Guy who took Amy to Gonzales's castle and told the story to Karen.) asked Jessica for the binoculars. Jessica did not want to hand over the binoculars. The two fought for a while, but Michael, who did not need binoculars with his eyes that could be sharpened up to a few kilometers, when necessary, said, "At least don't fight in this situation."

Abraham was the winner. While he was watching the dam, he was talking about what could be done: He had to get someone here who could fix the dam with his secondar specialties, right there. To him, it had to be Nina because she could use the metal and build the dam again.

Hearing the plan, Cindy opposed Abraham. Building a large dam would drain Nina's energy. For Nina, this could be fatal. Alaeddin said that one cannot know without trying. Besides, there was no other choice since there was no time to waste. The village was in danger. It would not be nice if something bad happened to the village while they were here.

They tried to find a solution for the dam for a while. Michael "Let Karen evaporate water then boil the villagers in it." When he tried to lighten the mood by making a joke, he was pinched by Cindy. Cindy hated her boyfriend's inappropriate behavior, and that was how she took her anger out on him.

"Our help is no longer needed. Apparently, there was already a secondar in the village," said Abraham. His eyes were still on the binoculars. Everyone looked at the dam. Although they could not see its owner, they saw a giant green thing wrapping around the dam's wall. The wall seemed to be reinforced and the cracks on the dam were sealed with it.

Michael narrowed his eyes a little more and said, "I think the one who prevented the destruction is an organization soldier. I saw the symbol of the organization on their raincoat."

Abraham took a good look at where Michael was pointing, with his binoculars . Because of the soldier's raincoat, their face was not visible. Then the soldier must have wanted to check the repair they had made, as their gaze swept up the dam and the hood of their raincoat fell off.

Abraham grimaced and without showing his face to those behind him said, "I don't know that soldier." Louis, the other soldier in the group like Abraham asked for the binoculars. Abraham thought that Louis would not recognize who they are, so he handed over the binoculars without hesitation. After looking for a while Louis said, "Oh I know her!"

When Abraham realized he knew who she was he tried to cover Louis' mouth, but Louis said, "She is one of General's soldiers and her nickname was something with green. Even though I do not remember her nickname, we have been on the same mission a couple of times." He lowered the binoculars and saw Abraham's panicked face... it was too late.

Karen took the binocular in with super speed. Standing closest to Karen a few seconds ago, Nina didn't realize what had happened at first. As soon as Karen heard what Louis said, he threw his map, which he had focused on tremendously, and took the binoculars.

When Karen started to look with binoculars, he did not see the soldier immediately. Then he saw the stirrings of people who looked like ants at the bottom of the dam. Then he saw the woman's blue raincoat. Under the heavy rain, with her wet hair and naive yet strong stance, the woman was checking the walls of the dam that she had just repaired.

Like she sensed that someone was watching her, she immediately turned her face where Karen was. Karen stood still for a moment. Then he smiled. He handed the binoculars to Monro and returned to where he had left his map and said, "Let's go now."

While some of the group members were chasing after Karen, Monro picked up the binoculars out of his curiosity and looked where the others had been looking. Actually, he thought that Karen had returned the binoculars which were belonged to him, but Karen's smile seemed to mean something else. A few seconds later, after he saw it, shouted "No, you've got to be kidding me!"

Karen laughed as he continued walking. Thanks to his deep ties with the organization, he had learned a lot about the soldier nicknamed Green Blood but could not find a picture of her or a document describing her physical appearance. He thought, "Instead of using my secret connections, I'd better ask Louis."

....

The virus called TCV, which had changed the history and future of humanity, could be picked up from a plant, a bug, a bird, a human.... Anything that humans can imagine. The virus was even able to affect bacteria.

The fertility of people who had such a variety of genetic mutations, also named secondar, was almost non-existent. Of course, there were some methods for the two secondar to have a child, and who knew the methods would be successful. For example, Miler family had four children.

But the fact was that a secondar and primar can't have a child. This fact also created a myth about a hybrid. According to the myth, there was only one hybrid and the organization had taken them under their protection.

At the beginning of the epidemic, the family was brought to Europe and settled there to study a family thought to be immune to the virus in North Asia. One of the married women of this family had fallen in love with another married secondar and a hybrid was born into the world. This part of the myth had more innocent or more immoral details according to the narrator, but the rest of the story never changed.

When this forbidden love was unveiled, that primar family had slaughtered by anti-primar mutants. Karen had heard this story when he was still a soldier, but he did not care because he thought it was a myth. Now he knew that General Oliver Miler did indeed was holding the only hybrid in the world, and they called that hybrid 'Green Blood'.

Despite the information acquired from his secret and trustworthy ties, Karen did not believe that the hybrid woman could sense the energies of all the living creatures. But when he saw 'Green Blood', or if she had said her real name, Amy, he got excited as soon as he saw Amy and the hybrid turned to look where he was. That was a justifier for him.

He could not leave the book he was looking for and follow her because he was with his friends at that moment. He hoped to meet her again someday elsewhere. Then he was taken back by his thoughts. He did not want to remember the last time he wanted to follow a person but not a book.

...

After Amy repaired the dam, she looked across it to check how strong her patches were. She was a little tired from the repair. She felt it, her energy was waning.

She had come here to find a nuclear-protected plant. If she could find this plant, she would take advantage of the well-being discount and commute some of her disciplinary action.

It was the most likely guess to find this plant here, as that place was radioactive and was taking plenty of rainfall, and it did worth... She saw this village by chance and when she realized that the dam was about to collapse, she repaired the dam using her power.

When she was satisfied with the outcome of what she did, she descended below the dam. She told the villagers that the dam would stay like this for a while, but that they should ask for help before it was too late.

The villagers did not want to let her kindness go unrequited. So, they invited her to the village. Amy could not break their heart and she decided to go to the village to be hosted for a couple of hours, but she immediately sensed something. She involuntarily turned her head towards the opposite hills.

She could not see anything, but something was there. She felt like she was being watched. A little nervously, she walked towards the waiting villagers with her head still turned towards the hills.
