Chapter 20πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯

I kept turning and tossing, trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in, but it was fruitless. There is no comfort in sleeping on the bare floor.

I managed to close my eyes and forced myself to sleep.

After some hours, I opened up my eyes and everywhere was suddenly bright.

I guess it was morning already.

I took my time stretching out my legs before deciding to get up and head back to my dorm.

I just hope Madeline isn't angry anymore. I really don't want her to hate me. I don't know anyone here but her.

I stood up with my pillow in my hands and went to the balcony to look at everywhere one more time before leaving.

After some time of receiving the early morning fresh air, I decided it was time to leave.

I was caught off guard by someone that was standing close to the door near the balcony when I turned back.

I shrieked in fear which made me almost throw my pillow off from my hands in fear but luckily I hustled to catch it before it fell to the ground.

That was close.

"Why do you keep doing that?" I say in aspiration to Jake who was leaning on the door with his arms crossed while looking at me.

"Doing what?" He replied with a cheeky smile on his face.

"Appearing out of nowhere like some sort of ghost or something." I say to him still recovering from the shock.

"It's not my intention to scare you." He said to me and I finally looked up at him.

"What are you doing here anyway?" I asked him and he suddenly furrowed his eyebrows.

"I could ask you the same thing." He said to me.

In the short moment of silence, I noticed him assessing me up and down with his brows still furrowed.

"Did you sleep here?" He asked me after assessing what I was putting on.

"What? Me? No no no. No. Infact I just got here. I like waking up early and just enjoying the early morning fresh look and smell. Something like that." I said nervously.

I couldn't tell him I slept here. What would he think of me.

"Are you sure about that?" He asked me.

"Yes. Ofcourse." I said and did a nervous small laugh.

"So Why did you sleep here? Don't you have a dorm? I know you're new here but you should know that it isn't safe for a girl to sleep in an almost abandoned place like this."

"Yeah so what if I did sleep here. What's it to you? You made it clear that we shouldn't and can't be friends. So I don't think you have the right to ask me Why I slept here. I mean unless you want us to be friends?" I said to him.

"Hmm. So if I agree to be your friend, you'll tell me why you slept here?" He asked me and raised his eyebrow at me.

"Yes." I replied and smiled at him.

"Okay. I'll be your friend. So tell me why you spent the night here." He said to me.

I smiled cheekily at him.

"So all it took to be your friend was to sleep in an abandoned building with a balcony." I said and chuckled.

I looked at him and saw he was looking dead serious. I quickly cleared my throat and put on a serious face as well.

"I had a fight with my roommate. So I decided to give her some space for the night." I said to him.

"Hm. Madeline." He said.

"You know her?" I asked him.

"Ofcourse. We all practically grew up together. Although I'm a tad bit older than she is." He said to me.

"The older the better." I said and chuckled.

I looked at him and saw he wasn't amused by my statement and went back into serious mode.

"You shouldn't take whatever she said to you to heart. She's a good girl." He said to me.

"I know." I replied and gave him a small smile.

"And you should get back to your dorm. Everyone isn't up yet. If you head out now, not much people will see you." He said to me.

"Right. Okay. I guess I'll get going now." I said to him and he nodded.

I walked passed him with my head down and reached for the door that leads outside.

Before I pushed open the door, I got a one last look at him and asked him, "Are we really friends now?"

"I guess we'll see." He said and gave me a small smile before turning his back to me.

I pushed open the door and walked back straight to my dorm with my head bent all through the way.

I knocked on the door to our room, waiting for Madeline to open up.

I waited for a while before the door was opened for me.

I looked over to the other corner and saw Sage coming out of a room very close to mine.

I didn't know her room was that close by.

She locked her door with the key she was holding and turned to look at me.

She looked at me and gave me a 'do we have a problem' look.

I slowly looked away but when I noticed her walking away I quickly looked back at her and watched as she left.

I remembered what I witnessed the other day, her mom slapping her.

And I kinda felt bad for her.

Madeline finally opened up the door.

We looked at each other for some seconds, and next thing I knew she hugged me.

"I'm so sorry Cassie. I didn't mean to take out my anger on you. I hope you don't hold yesterday against me, and where the hell did you go to? You got me worried." Madeline said when she released me from the hug.

"I'm so glad you aren't angry anymore." I said to her and smiled.

"Would you come in already." Madeline said and dragged me inside the room.

After I took my shower, I wore something nice for the day.

"I just can't believe my mom, nothing I do is ever good enough for her. It's like she doesn't want to acknowledge that I'm a good daughter, do you know she scolded me about the fight I had with Cara like it was my fault. I mean Cara started it all. Why was I the one that ended up being blamed." Madeline said in one take.

Wow she can talk.

"You know a similar thing happened with sage and her mom too. Is it like a norm here for moms to be overly strick with their kids?" I said to Madeline.

"Don't even get me started with Sage. I think she has it worse than me though. Her mom is the principal and she's cold as ice. One time she asked her two kids to stay underwater for a whole week as punishment for something they did." Madeline said to me.

"Underwater? How's that even possible?" I asked.

"Are you forgetting they have water magic flowing in their blood. They're like one with the water as I am one with the earth." Madeline said to me.

I suddenly remembered what I wanted to tell her Last night.

"Speaking of magic and powers. There's something I need to tell you, but you have to swear you won't tell anyone else." I said to her.

She suddenly sat up from her bed and focused her attention on me.

"I'm all ears and I swear." She replied.

"Well..... I think Mr Ken Griffey and I have figured out what my power is." I said to her and her mouth flew open.

"What! Really? thats great news! what is it?" Madeline asked me excitedly.

"Mind control." I said to her and wiggled my eyebrows.

"No way! Are you serious?" Madeline asked not believing what she heard.

"Yep. We even experimented on some people. And you should have seen what I was able to do." I said feeling excited myself.

"Wow. Mind control. I would have never thought that. Do you have any idea what you could do with that kind of power." She said to me.

"Not really. But I do feel pretty powerful now." I said to her.

"As you should. I'm happy for you. Now you truly do belong here with us." Madeline said to me and smiled. And I returned the smile.

When Madeline and I got to class, we took our seats close to each other.

The teacher came in right on time.

"Students, In today's lesson, we'll be learning how to work together so I'll be grouping you all in twos. The main event will take place on the field where there is enough space." The teacher said aloud.

The students suddenly started pairing themselves with their friends but the teacher interfered.

"Actually, you'll be pairing yourselves with someone who does not have the same element as you." The teacher said and the whole class started murmuring in disapproval.

"That is the only way this lesson will make any sense. Don't murmur and start pairing. Unless you want me to do the pairing for you." The teacher said.

Everyone was silent.

"Okay then. I take it your silence means I should do the honors. Then so shall I."

The teacher said and randomly started pairing up everyone.

Madeline was paired with that air girl that had a duel with Sage the other day, Phoebe I think.

Cara was paired with Stacy. Stacy didn't look too happy about it.

Everyone was already paired up, leaving Sage who hasn't been paired yet.

The teacher looked at me and gave me sympathizing smile.

"Cassie, you haven't discovered your powers yet, so it'll be tricky to pair you with someone and Sage, you're not paired with anyone yet. Well then I guess you two are the last pair. Sage you'll have to work with Cassie like that. I'm sure you both will do great as a team." The teacher said to sage and I.

I turned back to look at sage who was seating all the way at the back seat.

She wasn't giving off any emotions on her face so I didn't know what she was thinking.

I turned back to the teacher.

Madeline gave me a little encouragement nudge.

"Don't let her intimidate you. Remember what you can do." Madeline whispered to me and gave me a mischievous smile.

I chuckled and nodded at her.

Later on, the teacher asked us all to move to the field for our briefing on the rules of the lesson.
