Chapter 139 - A Call from the Past

In the midst of the charged atmosphere, Jack's eyes flickered with a frigid glint, and he spoke in a voice that bore the weight of unresolved issues, "I'll talk about it another day."

He sensed her determination, her unwavering spirit, and knew that confessing now would be futile. If he revealed his true intentions at this moment, she would undoubtedly refuse to donate a kidney, a critical decision that could affect Ye Wan'er's life.

With each step he took toward the stairway, Georgia's heart grew colder. Her fear wasn't solely about what he might be hiding; it was the thought that he was keeping everything from her, even as his wife. She believed she had the right to know.

Georgia couldn't bear the uncertainty any longer. She reached out and grasped his arm, her voice trembling with frustration, "Why can't you tell me now?"

If they were going to have this conversation eventually, why delay it any longer?

Jack halted in his tracks, his brows knitted in a frown, and his eyes smoldered with suppressed anger. The demands of Ye Wan'er's surgery, coupled with the pressing issues at his company, had left him drained and irritable. He opened his mouth, and his words seemed to rumble in his throat, "Do you have to demand an answer today?"

Georgia clenched her fists, determination in her eyes. Through gritted teeth, she declared, "Yes."

She wanted answers from him, and she wanted them now.

Jack's gaze darkened further, and his lips formed a tight line. After a moment of contemplation, he spoke with an air of resignation, "If that's how you feel, so be it."

With those words hanging in the air, he released her arm and walked away, leaving Georgia standing alone in the wake of their confrontation.

As the reality of the situation sank in, the chill in her heart spread. Numbness crept into her limbs, and she took a deep breath, needing time to process it all.

She had initially believed she had married a perfect man, and even though their union lacked a foundation of love, they had worked towards building a good life together. However, the harsh reality before her was like a cold bucket of water, brutally awakening her.

Throughout the night, Georgia tossed and turned, unable to find rest.

By morning, the sun had already risen, and Georgia rubbed her tired eyes. Her emotions were still in turmoil, and she struggled to find peace. With Jack forbidding her from going to the company, she was left with nothing to occupy her time, which only led her to dwell on her worries even more.

Then, out of the blue, her phone on the table vibrated.

Startled, Georgia picked it up and saw an unfamiliar number on the screen. She took a deep breath and answered the call absentmindedly, "Hello?"

A pleasant male voice, tinged with a hint of mischief, greeted her, "Do you miss me?"

Georgia blinked in bewilderment, momentarily thinking it was a prank call. Yet, the next sentence from the caller threw her off completely.

"Who is this?" she inquired, her guard up.

Could harassing phone calls have taken such a sophisticated turn?

The voice on the other end exuded a playful tone as it responded, "Assistant Ruan, you've truly forgotten me?"

Georgia's mind raced for a moment, and then a face flashed before her eyes. She realized with a start, "Cheng Cheng Zixiao."

"I knew you wouldn't forget me." Cheng Zixiao's tone remained as frivolous as ever. "You still owe me a meal, remember?"

Taking a deep breath, Georgia felt a semblance of composure returning. "I remember."

"Come out this evening. I've made a reservation at a restaurant."

Georgia hesitated her thoughts in turmoil. "I..."
