Chapter 3 - Treasure Trove

"Survive"

"Countdown: 24:36"

Breathing out heavily, Enyo staggered onto his two feet. He had mentally recovered from the traumatizing ordeal involving the corrupted creature and that vile river.

At this moment he was slowly becoming more anxious as he had heard some very suspicious sounds coming from the forest only thirty meters behind him.

He knew he had to make a decision before past events repeated themselves. Only this time it might be an actually powerful creature that set their eyes on him. Luckily, he had run into such a weak corrupted before or he believed his chances of survival wouldn't have been just slim.

It would have been zero.

Looking towards the protruding cave his face became resolute. He had to.

Making this heavy decision, Enyo walked towards the lake and began to swim at an average pace towards it. As he grew closer water started to sprinkle onto his head until he seemed to be bombarded by it completely.

Ignoring the sting from the water he reached the cave entrance and pulled himself up. Moving the hair from his face he peered into the dark cave trying to analyze if it possessed any potential danger.

Coming to the conclusion that it didn't pose any risk to him, or at least not for now. He slowly took a step forward until he turned his head back after hearing an ear-piercing screech from behind.

'Seems I made the right decision.' He reassured himself as he witnessed three creatures begin to make their way to the rocky shore.

Their slithering bodies were covered in scales, they seemed to resemble a type of python snake, they were as thick as a grown man's arm and each of them would reach at least two meters in length.

Watching the corrupted slither down the rocky shore Enyo began to wonder if they were here to drink some water. As that thought came to mind, he watched as the three snakes continued to slither straight into the water.

It seemed that these menacing creatures could glide on water. Or at least it looked like that to him.

Exhaling a deep sigh, he turned around and began his descent into the cave. At least the unknown was safer than trying to avoid those things.

As he travelled through the treacherous cave, light seemed to fade away the further he went. In his pocket was his pathetically empty wallet and an old phone he owned, he pulled it from his pocket anxiously and used the light that the phone omitted as a makeshift flashlight.

This was probably the only time that Enyo was glad of his time spent in poverty. Older phones just happened to be waterproof and pretty much a lot more reliable than the new models.

'I will never understand why rich snobs seem to like having their stuff become more fragile with every new release of the same old gadget.' He comforted himself.

Well, if he was rich he'd probably buy all this useless stuff too. Being in poverty for so long will make you consider a lot of things. Enyo had definitely considered what he'd be buying if he mysteriously ended up with lots of money one day.

'I'd definitely be living in an actual house. With an actual bed. Yeah, a nice big luxurious bed that's even longer than me.' He smiled to himself.

Focusing on the situation at hand he realized that whilst he had been caught up in his useless thoughts he had passed through various tunnels in the cave. It seemed this cave had a complex network of tunnels running through it.

Only a few meters in front of him the light from his phone finally lit up an entrance to a small chamber in the cave.

Slowing his pace to only a crawl, he began to enter the suddenly small chamber but stopped when he heard a small crushing sound under his foot.

Slowly moving his phone anxiously towards the ground where his foot stood, he was startled by a sudden message in his head.

"You have slain a scaled serpent."

Looking at these words dumbfounded, he realized that the crunch he heard moments ago was an actual egg that he had crushed under his foot! Suddenly he became aware of the dozens of eggs that lay all over the chamber!

A quick count would number the total eggs to forty-three if he didn't include the one he had just heartlessly crushed under his foot.

Coming to another sudden realization a wicked smile crept across his face. He had heard that killing a corrupted beast would help you gain strength and possibly give you a soul card if you had enough luck. Normally no person would get the chance to do so in their first visit here. It seemed as if he had encountered a treasure trove.

Although he didn't seem to feel as if he had received any strength, he couldn't be bothered to think about it. What mattered right now was the chance to receive a soul card. He was definitely aware that these things sold for quite a sum in the real world.

Not even needing to give a second thought to the current situation he began to kick his feet about wildly and destroy everything in his sight.

"You have slain a scaled serpent."

"You have slain a scaled serpent."

"You have slain a scaled serpent."

"You have slain a scaled ser..."

These words continued to ring out in his head as he thoughtlessly destroyed every egg he lay his cold eyes upon. Finally, he received a special notification.

"You have slain a scaled serpent."

"You have received a soul card."

"Yes!" He yelled out in triumph. Looking towards the system though he realized no change had occurred though.

"Where is it? Can I not access it until I Ignite my soul?"

His timely conjecture was correct. When first being thrown into this world even he had recalled that the system did not help him in any way whatsoever upon a person's first entry into the plane.

"Fine I'll just continue destroying the eggs for now."

As he finished off the last egg, he had a sad expression plaguing his face. Getting a soul card during someone's first entry was basically unheard of already! Though it seemed Enyo was quite the greedy one and wasn't happy with just the singular soul card.

"I need more money." He said to himself. His entry to this plane should have been a disastrous thing for someone like Enyo but he seemed to suddenly consider it as an opportunity.

An opportunity to make some good money for once in his life. Legally of course.

Sporting an excited expression, he quickly paced through a new tunnel in the cave system looking for more of these amazing eggs.

To his disappointment though he couldn't find any more and time was slowly running out.

"Survive"

"Countdown 14:19"

It seems he had wasted quite some time wondering about in this dark cave.

'I only have around fourteen minutes until I get pushed out of this world by the system. I need to make the most of it since I'm not in any danger whilst I'm in here.'

He relentlessly continued his search for more of the eggs as time passed by seemingly faster than he would have liked.

After countless time spent searching, he finally found another chamber in the cave system. This one was different though, there were no eggs to be found. Only a small altar stood there with a mysterious shiny circular stone with a dark purple hue, lodged into the top of the altar that seemed to sparkle a little when the light he held up came into contact with it.

Looking at the stone on the altar his eyes gleamed with greed. He had absolutely no clue what it was, but it definitely meant some more money for him.

"This thing is so shiny it's got to be worth something!" He yelled ecstatically.

As the words left his mouth they seemed to abruptly get caught in his throat. Behind him, an infuriated hiss reverberated into his eardrums like a tolling bell. Turning his eyes towards his back he looked on in horror as he witnessed a three-meter-long snake slithering towards him in an angry manner.

This scaled serpent must have been more powerful than the others he had seen before. It was much bigger, and its body seemed nearly as thick as Enyo's own thin body.

"This guy must be some kind of king to those others!" He said as his thoughts flew through his lips unobstructed due to the fear he was currently feeling being caught in such an epidemic.

In only a second or two that beast had slithered more than a few meters towards Enyo.

If he didn't move right now, he'd be receiving quite an unfriendly greeting from this serpent and its two deadly fangs. He didn't feel like meeting God today.

Thrusting himself forwards he rushed to the altar and swiped the stone as quickly as possible. Only, the shiny specimen seemed to disintegrate in a flash of white particles when he made contact with it.

Enyo heard something ring off in his head at that moment. He had no time to think about it though.

That stunt had just cost him some crucial time that he was meant to be using to escape. Ignoring the weird occurrence that just took place he lunged towards a new entrance in the side of the room and ran as if his life depended on it.

His life did depend on it.
