The alarm sound rings across the quiet room and I stretch my hand and fumble my way to the bedside table in an attempt to quiet the annoying sound. Once I turn it off, I roll over in bed and pull the covers over my shoulder. My phone vibrates violently on the table and I groan and pick it up.
"Don't tell me you're still in bed Nine," the voice sounds and I stifle a yawn.
"It's still early Luna, let me rest for a few minutes."
"Rest? Nine, you need to be at the hospital in less than an hour," she says and hangs up the phone.
I turn onto my back and look at the black screen.
"Well there goes my extra nap time."
Reluctantly, I get down from the bed and get ready. After a few minutes, am on my way to the hospital.
"Look who decided to grace us with her presence," Luna says and I roll my eyes at her comment.
"Morning to you too Luna."
I walk past her and into the reception Luna trailing a few steps behind me.
"Anything new happen?"
"Nothing that I know of," she replies and hands me my record file which I take with a small smile.
"Well then, I'll check on my patients first. See you soon."
She nods and I walk away heading down the East wing and into the first ward.
"Good morning Doc," Honey greets me with her normal joy.
"Morning Honey. How are you feeling today?" I ask checking her heart beat.
"Much better," she replies and I busy myself examining her body for any injuries and abnormalities.
I straighten up from her bed and smile," Well, looks like our brave girl is recovering quite fast."
"It's because you take great care of me," she says and I slowly pet her head.
"I'll be sure to bring you a gift for being a strong and brave girl," I say and she claps her hands excitedly.
"Really? You're the best."
I smile and look through her details on my file ticking and recording . With a quick nod, I wave her goodbye and walk out sliding the door shut behind me. I keep up with my routine checking in on every patient registered under my care. After a successful routine, I take my seat beside Luna's desk and lean over my desk.
"How are the kids?"
"They're recovering really fast," I reply head still on my desk.
"What's wrong with you? Are you tired after a short patient check in?"
"I didn't say that, did I?"
"You didn't but it's written all over your posture."
"Hello Nine and Luna, I need your help in the operation theatre."
I groan and slowly sit up.
"We'll be right there," Luna says and the senior doctor nods and walks away.
"Well then, let's get to it," she says and pulls me to my feet dragging me along with her.
With a slight nod, we walk towards the operation room and walk in. We each put on our protective clothing and proceed into the room.
"Am glad you could make it you two."
Luna nods and I glance at the kid on the operating table.
"What seems to be the case?"
"This girl suffers from a heart disease?"
"Heart disease? Isn't she a bit too young?" I ask my eyes finding their way back to the unconscious body in front of me.
The senior doctor lets out a low sigh and his eyes roam over the two of us.
"What specific disease is she suffering from?"
"Arrhythmias," he replies and a soft gasp escapes my lips.
"Did you find a donor?"
"Not at the time but we are keeping her under close observation."
"Did you call us to carry on with the surgery?"
"You two are the best paediatricians in the entire building."
Luna and I exchange knowing looks but we bite our tongues waiting for him to continue.
"I need you two to monitor her conditions and report to me on a daily basis."
"But.."
"You can count on us," Luna says cutting me off and I eye her sceptically.
"Perfect. I knew you would be the right doctors for the job," he says and waves a dismissive hand at us.
We nod slowly and walk out of the room. Once we are back to our posts, I turn to Luna hands on my hips.
"What?"
"You..."
"Excuse me doctors."
I turn around and come face to face with a junior nurse.
"Yes?"
"Am sorry to disturb you but there's a patient Dr.Nine needs to tend to," she says and Luna smiles.
"Of course she's all yours. Talk to you later Nine," she says and disappears out of sight.
I look from her back to the nurse and nod.
"Lead the way."
The nurse nods and I follow behind her as she walks down the hall ways and into a ward. I open the door and head inside.
"Thank goodness you're here doctor. Something's wrong with my daughter," the guy says and I nod and walk towards the girl lying on the bed.
"Mind explaining what happened?" I ask as I run a few tests on her.
"Well she was fine when I walked in but after a few minutes of talking and laughing, she started coughing."
I nod my head in understanding and feel her pulse.
"It's nothing serious," I say and turn my attention to the guy," but she should rest. Am afraid your visit will be cut short."
"It's okay. I can come visit when she's in a better condition."
"Thank you for understanding. If you please, I'll walk you out," I say and the guy smiles warmly in return," watch over her."
The nurse nods and together we walk out with the guy.
"I'll leave my daughter's health in your care," he says turning to face me and I nod.
"She's in the best hands sir, you can count on me."
The guy nods and walks out and I turn and continue my rounds .
