I cover my mouth stiffening a yawn as I walk into Honey's room. She beams immediately her eyes land on me and I smile.
"Morning Honey, how was your night?"
"It was great, I had a pleasant dream," she says and I take a seat on the chair.
"Really? Were you a princess in a beautiful castle?"
She clasps her hand over her mouth in shock and eyes me," How did you know?"
"Someone as beautiful as you? It's certain you dream about royalty," I say and she pouts her lips playfully.
"Hey doc, can I ask you something?" she asks and her serious tone has me on edge and I slowly nod my head.
"Of course Honey, what do you want to ask?"
"Do I have any family members? All the kids in the play room are always visited by their family members while you're the only who visits me."
I gulp uneasily and hold her hands in mine squeezing them reassuringly.
"Do you miss them?"
"What's there to miss? I don't have any memory of any of them," she says and I smile warmly.
"Honey, your parents went on a trip and left you under my care," I say and she smiles.
"You're the best, you always act like my big sister and am happy that you're here with me," she says as tears roll down her cheeks.
I raise my hand to her cheek gently wiping the tears with my thumb.
"Don't cry Honey, you'll ruin your beautiful face," I say and she chuckles.
"Okay," she replies and wipes the remaining tears from her eyes.
I gently pat her head and her eyelids close shut as she drifts off to sleep. After a quick kiss on her forehead and tucking her in, I stand and walk out of the door silently closing the door behind me.
"There you are Nine, I've been looking for you everywhere," Luna says walking up to me.
"Hi Luna, what happened?"
"There's an emergency out front, you need to hurry up."
Before she can say more, a group of junior nurses rush towards our direction pushing a hospital bed. Automatically, we dash towards the group of junior nurses.
"Case report."
"Ten year old, had an asthma attack on her way to school."
"Please, save my daughter.. she's the only one I have left," a guy shouts as the nurses push her into the operation room.
Luna nods her head and disappears through the doors leaving me with the feeble man.
"Please sir, you should take a seat first."
I lead him to the nearby benches and smile. As I turn to leave, he grabs my hand and I look at him
"Please... save my child... she's the only one I have left..."
His words trail off as he cries his shoulders shaking and trembling as he sobs. Unsure of what to do, I place a hand on his shoulder and smile encouragingly.
"We'll try our best. Now if you'll excuse me."
I walk through the doors leaving the man to his thoughts. I immediately get dressed and walk into the chamber. After a long examination, the child's chest moves up and I let out a silent sigh of relief.
"You did it Nine, she's out of danger."
"Take her to the wards and we'll keep an eye on her conditions in case the symptoms appear again."
The nurses nod and push her out of the room. Luna and I walk out and the child's father immediately runs up to us.
"How is she? Is she okay?"
I turn to Luna who nods and walks away as I turn to the man.
"Rest assured sir, she's out of danger."
The man's shoulders slump in relief as a sigh escapes his lips.
"Thank you. Thank you so much doctor, I don't know how I can repay you for saving my princess' life."
"Don't worry sir but we will have her admitted so that I can watch over her incase something like this happens again."
"Admitted? Won't that be expensive?"
"Sir?"
"Can you just prescribe her some medicine that'll help her?"
"Am afraid I can't do that. I need to watch over her and make sure her condition has stabilized before I prescribe her some medicine."
The man reluctantly nods, thanks me and walks away. I head to the cafeteria.
"After a nerve racking operation, some coffee and sweets is what my body needs at the moment," I say to myself as I head to the counter to pick my quick snack.
"Oh Nine, what will you have?"
"Same as usual Abryl" I say and a smile spreads across his lips.
"Coming right up my lady," he says and turns away fixing my order.
After a few minutes, he places the tray on the counter and I take it.
"Thanks."
He waves me farewell as I head out of the café sipping from my cup. Once at my desk, I take the cake and put it in my mouth.
"Mmh..." my hand finds its way to my cheek as I close my eyes savouring the delight.
"Is it that good?" Luna asks and my eyes snap open in surprise.
"Oh Luna. It's just you."
"Were you expecting someone else?"
She comes and stands behind me picking my spoon and cutting the cake. She brings it to her mouth and a grin forms on her lips.
"Not bad," she says and takes the entire dessert and I chuckle.
The rest of the day passes by in a flash flurry of events and soon am on my way home. The cold night air blows and I look up to the sky smiling to myself. Once I arrive home, I quickly shower and sit at my desk reading from my book. A loud howl echoes through the silent night and I look up from my book. My gaze is strangely drawn to the window and a strange sensation fills me as I walk towards the window. I slowly draw my curtains open and peer out into the darkness.
