Chapter 13 - Maddison's Empty Promises

Anaya entered the house with Don behind her and stepped into the elevator.

"Her room is on which floor?" Anaya asked without looking at him. "Fifth" he replied. She pressed the button and they began moving upwards.

The elevator stopped and the doors opened. Don walked down the hallway and stopped at two golden doors at the end of the hallway.

He knocked and a soft replied echoed from the room. They pushed the door and entered to find a lady sitting in front of a dresser while two maids were unpacking her things into the wardrobes.

No doubt she was their Mum, she had the same blonde hair and green eyes Michael and Isabella had. She was just thicker, matured-looking and taller.

"Hi Mum!" Don greeted neutrally. "Oh hello dear!" she replied while still looking at herself in the mirror.

"Won't you at least come and give your Mum a welcome hug?" she turned around and spread her arms open for a hug.

He relunctantly went and hugged her. She smiled and released him.

"What of your siblings? I haven't seen any of them yet" "They're somewhere in the house. They probably didn't hear you have arrived"

"And who is she?" she asked skeptically while referring to Anaya.

"Anaya" she answered on cue.

"Well nice to meet you Anaya, I'm Maddison" "Nice to meet you too"

"I assume you're another friend of Isabella's" she said with a hint of contempt.

"She is my wife, Mum" Don replied. She stood up and stared at him in shock.

"Wife? You can't be serious, Don, how can you be married?" "You would know if you actually cared to spend time with your family" he said with bitterness.

"That's not even the point. How can you get married to her. You're supposed to get married to Camilla!"

Anaya didn't know this woman, but the few minutes she had spent in the room had just confirmed everything Isabella said about her.

"Well, I chose to marry Anaya instead" "You should be wise enough to not make such a careless decision" she scolded.

"You and Camilla have been friends since you were kids. You'll break her heart if you do this"

"Damage has already been done. I've already gotten married to Anaya, and Camilla knows. Besides, I never made any promise or said I was ever going to get married to her, that was all you"

"I said this countless times while you guys were younger" "That was before. I didn't say anything then because I thought she'd grow up and understand those were pointless delusions and you were just fuelling them with promises you now can't fulfill"

"Well now that she actually loves you and was hoping you'd marry her one day, what are you going to do about that?"

"That is a 'you' problem. Besides, I already told her that I'm married to Anaya. If she still resolves on believing that I promised to marry her, then that isn't my problem" he shrugged.

"But Camilla is a better match for you. You've known her longer than 'her' " she said and looked at Anaya with disgust.

She gripped Don's arms tightly. "Rethink your decision Don. Don't make this terrible mistake"

"Mum"

"Camilla is a perfect wife for you"

"Mum"

"She'll make you happier than any other person will"

"Enough mum!" he said with so much force that even the maids were shaken.

He took her hands and held them in his. "I wouldn't have married Camilla even if I didn't meet Anaya. Me and her can only be friends and that's all. My feelings for her will never change" he said in a low voice.

"Now that I'm married to Anaya, if you can't be happy for me then please don't say anything else. This should be the last time we have to talk about Camilla; I don't want to ever have this discussion again!" he said firmly and released her arms.

She kept her eyes fixed on him in anger as he walked back to Anaya. She couldn't believe her own son would disregard her opinion.

It didn't matter what he said. She knew better than he did, and she knew that Camilla would be a perfect wife for him and a suitable daughter-in-law for her. And she planned on making that a reality.

"Ma'am should we..." "Out! Both of you!" she yelled and theye scurried out of the room like frightened mice.

She scattered her bed and dresser in search of her phone. Once she found it, she quickly dialled Camilla's number.

It rung multiple times, but there was no answer. "Pick up, Camilla!" she gritted her teeth. And as though her prayers were answered, she answered the call.

Her sobs and sniffles were audible enough for Maddison to hear. "Camilla?" "Yes aunt?" she answered shakily.

"Are you okay?" "Of course not" "Tell me what happened"

"I came over today to see Don, and I met that bitch named Anaya. When I was about leaving, I sat with Isa and told Anaya to get me something to eat. She poisoned my food and caused me to vomit numerous times"

Maddison covered her mouth with her hand in shock.

"Oh my! Did you tell Don?" "I did. But instead of doing something, he scolded me for sending Anaya on errands and telling me some trash that I owed her respect because she was his wife" she cried harder.

"Camilla just calm..." "Aunt, tell me Don was lying. You promised me that he would marry me because I was the only one he loved"

"And you still are, dear. He loves you but he doesn't know that yet. But that's why I'm here. I will make him realize that" "But how?" "I can't explain over the phone. I'll come visit you tomorrow then we can talk, okay?"

Camilla sniffed. "Hmm" she hummed in agreement.

"That's better. Now wipe your tears and stop crying. Don won't love you if your eyes are red and swollen" she soothed and waited for her sniffles to die down.

"Good! Now, take care of yourself. I don't want my future daughter-in-law to be looking stressed and hagard" "Yes aunt. Bye!" "Bye, dear!" she replied and hung up.

Don wasn't going to spend the rest of his life with anybody but Camilla, and she was going to make sure of it.
