Chapter 7 - To Not Die

"Ah, I will be damned," Licht said as his body started tensing up.

His hands were sweaty enough that the sword could just slip away if he didn't hold it tightly.

The weight of the sword was too much for him in a nutshell. He didn't know if it was his strength that was compared to a regular human or if was it just the sword that was too heavy.

He reckoned that if he swung this more than ten to twenty times, his arms would literally fall off. Ignoring the pain, he focused on the situation at hand.

Looking at the rat kinda creature in front of him, he couldn't come to any conclusions. Its body looked frail and weak, the lines of bones visible on its back. But the two shocking things were that the bones in its legs were clearly visible as if the flesh was removed out just to show the tendons and bones.

The second was that the Rat was too big. It was about one meter in length and around arm's length in width.

Readying the sword in his hands, Licht wanted to take advantage in this fight that's why he took the initiative to start the battle.

Moving his legs on the cold damp floor he ran forward, looking quite amateur but still moving with vigor. His steps echoed in the sewers.

But as he had expected, the Rat also didn't stay still, it rushed forward with twice the speed of Licht and left a scratch mark on his bare leg.

'Ugh,' A disgruntling noise came from his mouth as he ignored the bleeding on his legs.

'It is too fast!' Licht tried to think of possible ways to defeat the damn creature but how could he tackle something that was faster than him.

The ground, the walls, and even the roof were made from dirt suspended in the water that seemed mushy and gooey, making moving difficult. He had to push harder every time he wanted to step forward.

While adapting to this new environment, he also had to deal with an unfamiliar creature and survive.

The Rat gave him no time to rest. It charged again and again. Tearing down Licht's defense every time. As time went by, his stamina started to decrease while the Rat was still full of vigor, as if it wasn't even living…

Only then did a realization dawn upon Licht, the zone he had chosen was the undead one.

There were many and he had thought that what he had chosen was some dark environment zone.

But it was not!

All the zones were divided by their affinities. If the Rat was an undead, then it didn't have some of the senses like eyes from his observation.

And as it was undead, its stamina was obviously endless!

But Licht finally started to find a pattern for the attacks.

'I can do this! I just need the perfect timing.'

'It is either that damn calamity or me'

'IT WON'T BE OVER TILL I WIN'

And he finally did come up with a way to defeat it. With the pattern of Rat's attacking in his mind, Licht had to do some simple actions.

Even before his brain could register what was happening, his hand just swung forward. His muscles felt extreme tension from the sudden moment. Explosive power is hidden in that blow.

The Rat ultimately dodged the blow as the sword lodged in the ground. It followed its instincts and got back, waiting for another moment to attack.

Licht's sword was still vibrating from impact, indicating the power behind it. He had taken advantage of gravity and just forced it through the ground, leaving it before his hand could get any impact from the vibration.

He knew for a fact that neither his muscles nor his bones were developed to recklessly swing such a heavy sword. Dislodging the sword, he waited for the wariness of the creature.

He was in complete defense mode, not moving an inch from his place.

He couldn't extend the fight nor could he sustain more injuries. If he had to survive, he had to come out alive with minimal injuries.

Without even giving another second to Licht, the creature sprinted again, going for another round with him. But the result was the same as last time.

Both of his eyes tracked the Rat and blocked its path with the sword.

In the course of the battle, Licht did the same thing again and again, aiming for that one moment, and that one moment certainly came.

The Rat finally made an impulsive, it did stop this time as well before the sword, but jumped up to get his hands instead of the legs.

Licht knew this. A beast at the end of the day would follow its hunger more than instinct. Just as the Rat's teeth were gonna come in contact with Licht's hand.

A change has happened.

His body moved backward, missing the sharp-edged teeth by a hair's length but the fight didn't end here.

The rat's head turned in confusion while a sense of foreboding doom came from its side. Licht was rushing into it.

Crashing into the beast, he overturned its body, making it flail its legs around while being on its back.

The human had tricked it!

Licht had made the Rat take an impulsive decision and left his sword while following up with his tackle. It was a gamble for his life and it had certainly paid off.

Licht grabbed the sword from the ground, dragging it with one hand, still holding down onto the ant. He dropped the sword on its body, again and again.

Swing it again and again until big cuts started forming on the skin. The Rat's shriek started as small but grew bigger with each hit. It flailed around. Trying to get out of death's hands.

But there was a hint of madness in Licht's head and eyes. "I will kill you! Let me give you a flavor of the same medicine," he said in a low voice as a grin formed on his face.

Under the constant barrage of his sword, the Rat finally died. Only a gruesome and gore display was left to see. Standing up, he went to the opposite wall with slow steps. Resting his back on the wall, he finally breathed a sigh of relief.

And as if it was waiting for him, a message could be seen in his vision now.
