Chereads / Awakening of the Dragon God / Chapter 5 - Memories

Chapter 5 - Memories

Sam's eyes opened.

Yet, he felt like he was in complete darkness, unable to see anything around him. He attempted to take a breath, but his body wouldn't allow it, causing him to panic and flail all seven of his limbs for a brief moment. However, his limbs remained unresponsive to his commands. After a few seconds of anxiousness, he realized that he didn't have a need to breathe...

Then it finally hit him, ' Seven limbs, huh? Two wings, a tail, two front arms, and two legs. It seems like I have indeed become a dragon.'

' If I'm not mistaken, the only reason why everything around me is filled with darkness despite opening my eyes, and my inability to move any of my limbs, is because I'm still an egg.' Sam quickly deduced as he took some time to think about his situation, taking this chance of free and safe time as an opportunity to get a hold of himself and his new reality.

He calmed down and recalled everything, placing the whole picture in front of him,' I'm no more a human, that's something I can never change, and even if somehow existed a method for it, the Dragon God will surely get rid of me the moment I even think about it. But then again, I have no reason to do such a thing, I died, and my human life was supposed to end; this is just an opportunity to live again that probably no one else got to have.'

He wasn't ignorant, despite him being a human since forever; he realized full well that thinking about such things is pointless. Plus, the Dragon God made it clear that he gonna have to show everyone the true power of dragons.

' Dragon, huh!' He was mused with his new reality and couldn't help but link it a little to his deeds in his past life.' I have killed many people to repay my parent's debts, even though I had no say in the matter, with my parent's life being at stake, I still killed many humans. Is this some kind of punishment? Turning into a dragon."

' No, Sam! You have never taken the offer of becoming an assassin for your parents. You did it because you cherished your life!'

' Your parents were constantly fighting all day long for years, yelling every night, not even caring if you got to sleep or not, betraying each other in secret, hating each other in the open. The sole reason they never divorced was their debt. You weren't even a priority to them.'

'Aghhhhhh!'

His head hurt like crazy as he attempted to suppress those memories that flooded inside his brain. Yet, he suddenly paused; he allowed them to pass through, fill his brain, and stay with him.

' No need to suppress my dark past any longer, I'm no more a human, and the Dragon God made sure that I understood that before he sent me here. These memories should be treated as remnants of the distant past, tossed away never to emerge again.'

' I have killed people to save my life, it was never for my parents' debts, which is normal for any human to do, and everyone would have done the same. But all of this doesn't matter anymore; I should now focus on my new life.'

Think, don't think. Listen, don't listen. You are too concerned with what was and what will be. There is a saying. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. But today is a gift.

' Seems like that sentence wasn't meant for that moment; he probably anticipated that I'd have a breakdown the moment I'm introduced to my new reality. Well, this is something that I should expect from a god, especially a dragon one, which is famous for being wise and superior to humans.'

' Superior to humans, huh? Are they? Maybe those fantasy books were all overestimating dragons too much, and this world proved that point. Dragons are beasts that are below humans, and no matter how strong a dragon is, he will be outsmarted, outnumbered, out strengthened.'

' Well anyway, time to get out of this egg, that's if I'm not mistaken at least.'

Even though he appeared to be talking to himself for long, only a few seconds passed in the real world. At the end of the day, thoughts are way faster than mere words, and someone can even recall their whole life in a matter of minutes, reflecting on their past actions, and that's what happened with Sam.

In the next few hours, he was trying his hardest to move his legs, but to no avail; it was like the timing was still not appropriate for him to break the egg and be born into the world.

He was still too weak, unable to control his body, unable even to lift his tail.

Surprisingly though, Sam never had any issues with the feelings of his limbs. He found it weird at first, but he easily got used to feeling and moving them. Even though they didn't, he was confident that he had the ability to do so; he was just too young for that to happen.

' Magical indeed, it's like I'm moving my hands and legs while trying to control my wings and tail; nothing is different from when I was back a human; it's like I only grew more hands and legs that I could control with the same efficiency as my usual ones.'

Hours passed.

Days passed.

Months passed.

And soon, he lost count of how long he spent inside his egg.

He lost track of time.

It appeared that time didn't matter in this few meters area specifically designed for him.

He felt like he could spend all eternity in this place, never dying, Immortal.

He thought about multiple things, and after a long time of being inside the egg, his memories grew distant. His memories of his younger days, in particular, turned blurry.

More years passed.

He didn't know how long he was supposed to stay inside this egg or why it was taking so long.

He moved his limbs from time to time, but nothing happened; he attempted to force it, but nothing occurred yet again. He was helpless.

He was bored.

All of his memories became blurry after more years passed; he didn't know what to think of this situation.

He could clearly remember his name, he remembered the fantasy books he read and all of that information related to that, but everything except that was gone. It was like his human life never existed.

It felt like all of his long-lived years were but a mere lie, fabricated by the universe to make him believe that he had once been a human, that he once lived a life.

But he quickly denied that and calmed himself down; the memories of him reading fantasy books were still vividly there; he could feel them, see them; they were proof that he once lived as a human, proof that he had a life.

But was that true?

Did he?

After a few hours of thinking about that point, a few things hit him as he finally retained his conscious from drifting away in the dark, detaching from his being, never to return again.

' The Dragon God, huh? Indeed, I once lived as a human, and he probably made those memories about those fantasy books never to be forgotten for the sole reason that they will be a huge help for me in understanding this world better and faster.'

' This world, huh? Am I really gonna reincarnate as a dragon? So much time had passed, yet I never got to hatch out of this egg. Am I even in an egg?'

More time passed.

He felt mentally tired.

He felt the need to sleep forever.

His eyes were closing on their own and he had no control over them.

' How long had it been? Maybe I should try to break free one last time?'

As he made his resolve to attempt it another time before this sleepy desire that suddenly hit him outpowered him. He tried to move his leg.
