Alex and I walked side by side as we climbed the stairs to class.
"Are you listening?" he asked me, causing me to startle. Of course, I wasn't listening; my mind had wandered back to Jake. He had a stern look on his face as he walked out of the car. Could something have happened? I wondered.
"Piper?"
"Yeah?" I said, my tone flat.
Alex paused. His eyes examined my face before he let out a sigh and said, "What really happened?" he asked, and I looked at him confused. "It must have been something serious for you to look this bothered."
He was talking about the assumed fight, and I wanted to roll my eyes. "It's nothing serious," I said instead.
I could feel his gaze on me once again; something about the way he stared at me felt like he knew I was lying. "Okay, if you say so," he said with a shrug, and I could feel my shoulders fall to the side.
