"Karlmine."
The princess called to him.
"Yes princess."
"You have been quiet for a while is everything okay? Could it be that this walk is troublesome and your body has not fully recuperated?"
She sounded worried.
"No princess, I am well rested and I have you to thank for that. Its just that the sun seems exceptionally bright I don't know what happened to me before you found me but my body feels like it is mine yet not mine_____ I have no idea what I am saying pay it no heed."
The princess however seemed to take what he said to heart the reason was, when Karlmine was unconscious she had taken it upon herself to examine him and find the reason for his memory loss and in doing that she sensed something in Karlmine, a power that seemed dormant but very ancient but not only that it was also malevolent.
"Say princess, what was that about?"
"What do you mean?"
"Me being your betrothed."
"Oh that well it is complicated."
She became bashful and seemingly guilty at the same time.
"The thing is I have not been forth coming with you."
She explained.
"Yes I figured as much."
"You knew?"
The princess frowned.
"It is only natural princess after all I am a stranger here and you are in the midst of war yet despite that you snuck out to find me which was dangerous but not only that you brought me to your camp which could compromise your security if I were a spy and I must daresay you have been overly too nice towards me."
(His senses are still as astute as ever I see.)
"But princess I am still interested in how you managed to find me."
"Oh it was through divination, I occasionally happen to have visions about certain things sometimes I can control the visions sometimes they hijack me yours was the latter."
She explained.
"Okay I understand so what exactly do you expect from an amnesiac like me?"
It was difficult even for the princess to read what he was thinking.
"The war is going poorly and at this rate I fear we are going to lose that is why I need a strong soldier and commander like you."
She decided to be honest about everything.
"That is a bold move but wont it yield negative results, I have realised that not everyone is happy about my presence here and giving an outsider the right to command will not bode well with the others."
What he pointed out were all valid points and he was not lying by people not being very welcoming to his presence. Putting the sexually active ladies aside the males which were the majority in the fort had been giving him the stinky eye and the malice oozing from them was difficult to miss.
"That is true and that is what leads to the betrothal part, if you are engaged to me then by marital status you have a higher rank and every elf by law and honour is bound to follow you."
(So she has thought this through huh.)
"Then what about your happiness princess but isn't tying yourself to someone you don't love inconvenient to you?"
"How adorable my young prince but that is not a problem for me, you are adorable after all."
She smiled coyly and started blushing.
"So do you agree?"
"I do not like to be indebted, from my point of view I owe you a life debt so I have no problem but there is one last problem."
"What is it?"
"So far whenever people here my name they become on guard I take it I once fought against the elves before and many lost their loved ones because of me."
"T-That is regrettable but the truth, we once lost severely to the humans and you were the prince that led the humans in that battle."
"Okay then I will just have to fight that much harder to make sure I placate their anger but princess be warned if any should try to attack me or cause harm to me in some shady way I will kill them."
All this while Karlmine's expression remained stoic with no trace of emotions. She truly was vexed by the fact that she could not make head or tails what was happening in that guy's head but what he said just now she was sure that it was not just an empty threat he really meant if any of the other guys tried anything aloof he would not hesitate to strike them down.
