Chapter 15 - The Grotto

Once again Fenrir endured the strange sensation of passing through nothingness before he stepped out of the portal into a dark damp cave illuminated by glowing moss and mushrooms covering the walls. Fenrir was by himself with a wall of stone behind him only leaving one way forward. A screen then appeared in front of his eyes and Fenrir quickly read through the information on display.

Closing out the window Fenrir took a deep breath and let the stale air of the cave fill his lungs. The air was damp and earthy but Fenrir's sensitive nose could pick up the sour note of sweat and even fire.

Holding his dagger in one hand Fenrir crouched low to the ground as he ventured further into the cave. Starting slow at first Fenrir took care to check around every nook and cranny as he stalked through the winding tunnels of the underground domain.

But then Fenrir stopped mid stride as he heard the sound of bare feet slapping against the cold stone floor followed by high pitch chittering of something. Tightening his grip around his knife Fenrir could feel his heartbeat pound against his chest like an internal war drum.

'It's about time,' Fenrir's lips twitched in a smirk as he exploded from his crouched position around yet another bend in the tunnel. Fenrir was no more than a blur as he turned the corner and entered a wide section of the tunnel compared to the relatively narrow parts previously.

The tunnel was also occupied by a group of five squat bipedal creatures with oblong heads, sickly green skin, beak-like mouths with fangs jutting from both their bottom and upper lips. Instead of noses they had two diagonal slits and their four fingered hands all ended in black talons. Each wore a dirt loincloth around their waist with a crude stone knife strapped to their hip.

The moment the monsters came into view Fenrir triggered his Focus using the device to identify each creature.

The Goblins were simply walking around occasionally; one would get too close to another and they would snarl at each other in their high pitched chirping. But none of them noticed Fenrir who swept into the room like a flickering shadow unseen and without a sound. In a matter of seconds Fenrir was behind the nearest goblin and he pounced.

There was not a moment of hesitation as Fenrir plunged his knife into the goblin's side at an angle. He felt the blade scrape past the creature's rib cage and into the vulnerable organs inside.

The goblin let out a shrill squawk of pain that cut off into a wet gurgle as Fenrir twisted the knife, turning the monster's insides to pulp.

A fountain of black blood burst from the creature's mouth as it went limp and Fenrir roughly shoved the goblin to the ground with a thud as he wrenched his knife out causing more putrid blood to spray into the air in a fine mist.

The remaining four goblins all froze as they stared at Fenrir who flicked his blade to the side, cleaning the metal of the viscous monster ichor and making the blade gleam in the fluorescent light from the bioluminescent moss.

Then a chittering cry echoed out from a goblin to Fenrir's right that was quickly taken up by the rest of the group as they charged. Waiting for the mash of monsters to reach him Fenrir crouched, placing the majority of his weight on the balls of his feet and flipping his knife around so it was in a reverse grip.

Then the Goblins were on him, the first of which leapt into the air, its fangs dripping with thick saliva and its knife angled to stab down at Fenrir with all of the monster's weight behind the blow.

Jumping up to meet the Goblin, Fenrir grappled it in mid air, grabbed its twig like wrist with his off hand and squeezed. There was a quiet snap like a branch breaking under foot followed by a shrill Goblin cry as its hand went limp dropping its crude knife to the ground. Snarling as the high pitch note assaulted his sensitive ears Fenir silenced the Goblin slashing through its wind pipe with his knife.

They hit the ground a second later with a bone breaking crunch as Fenrir cushioned his fall with the dying goblin. Still Fenrir barely paused as he rolled to his feet before tilting his head sharply to avoid the stone blade aimed at severing his neck.

Going with the momentum of his dodge Fenrir flipped over onto his hands while bracing his legs. Still despite his best efforts the impact when his feet slammed into the Goblin's chin was still jarring.

Completing his back handspring Fenrir landed in a crouch, knife still in hand. The goblin he had kicked was lying dazed on the ground, its fingers twitching, either it was concussed or suffering from a broken neck. Either or it left Fenrir facing down two charging goblins.

The pair of monsters reached him almost simultaneously but Fenrir only smiled as his eyes flickered with a gray light as his pupils became vertical slits.

Tilting his head to the side Fenrir let the first goblin's knife miss him by a hair's breadth before slicing the monster from groin to shoulder leaving a brutal diagonal gash across the Goblin's torso.

Unbothered by the shower of black ichor that rained down on him, Fenrir's foot lashed out, kicking the already dead goblin into his companion. The last goblin squealed as it was sent tumbling to the ground by the corpse of its companion.

As the Goblin struggled to free itself a shadow loomed over it as Fenrir's knife plunged down and through its skinny neck only pausing briefly as it severed the monster's spine.

Watching the goblin's eyes fog over Fenrir was still for a moment as he slowly stood up. Hearing the faint shuffle of feet behind him Fenrir spun around as he pulled out one of the small throwing knives from his bandolier.

Fenrir's slitted eyes locked onto the goblin he had kicked who had just managed to stand back up. Cocking back his arm Fenrir let the knife fly and watched as it hurtled through the air flipping end over end.

Only for the knife to fly far over the goblins head and clatter off the stone out of sight. The Goblin looked over it shoulder at the knife before turning around to face Fenrir with a snarl.

For a long moment Fenrir didn't move until a short chuckle broke the silence as he stood up, "I guess I need to practice."

Pulling out another throwing knife Fenrir's smile was anything but friendly, "Luckily I should have plenty of targets."
