As I look at the villagers moving, I don't know what to think. They believed me just like that. What is going on here?
I go back inside my hut and take out a copper coin from under the bed. It turns out that I did have coins but did not check properly yesterday.
"How much can I get for a copper coin?" I wonder.
I go out to the nearby bread shop. The shop owner is another lady. Even though she is not as beautiful as Betty, she has her own charms. Or maybe I have seen more of Betty. I shake my head and move ahead.
"Can I get a bread?" I ask.
"Oh, Rohan, here you go," she says as she hands over a loaf of bread to me.
Before I could give her the coin, another person comes and asks for a bread.
"Susan, give me a loaf of bread."
"Here you go," Susan gives him a loaf of bread as well.
After taking the bread, the man just walks away without paying her.
I get confused and look at Susan. But she does not give me another look and takes care of her business.
So... do I just go home with the bread? Don't I have to pay? How the heck does this world work?
I get back into my hut and chew on the bread.
"Man, this sucks. Imagine living in another world with just a loaf of bread every day. And where are the parents of this body? Are they dead? Now I can't go around asking the villagers for it, can I?"
"But something does not seem right with the villagers. Why does it make sense to the villagers that I don't know farming? And why did Agnes not get angry when I interrupted him during sex? And there are those bandits as well. Just what the heck is going on with these people?"
I keep trying to come up with some reason behind it as I chew on my bread when suddenly I hear a commotion outside.
"I said I will pay later..." a fox-like man shouts at Susan as he takes a bread and tries to get away with it.
"But you haven't paid for the ones you took before. Please pay for the bread," Susan retorts.
"You bitch, I said I will pay later!" he shouts as he tries to slap the woman.
But before he could do anything, his hands are grabbed by the person who had taken the bread for free earlier. "That is enough, Milo. If you do not pay now, you will not be getting anything either."
"Honey..." Susan says as she moves towards the man.
"Honey?" So that's why he did not pay for the bread earlier. Wait, then why did she let me go with the bread?
The fox-like and sly man Milo looks at the other man with frustration. "You guys just wait, you will pay for this," and he walks away without returning the bread.
"That's such an old line by some evil character. Can't he think of something else?" I think to myself, trying not to dwell on it.
No, not that again.
I look at Susan and her husband as I try to figure out why I got the bread for free.
Susan looks at me and says, "Rohan, you are back. Do you need more bread?"
"Yeah... Yes, I need more bread. Please give me one more," I say as I look at her peculiarly.
She goes back to her shop and brings me another piece of bread. And then starts moving back to the shop.
"What, so I don't have to pay again? Am I special?"
First Agnes, then the villagers, and now Susan... the way they treat me is weird. Is there a reason behind it? It seems that I am different... somehow.
