I grabbed the black scarf mum had sent for from my drawer and I went downstairs.
"Mum" I yelled, stamping my feet and glancing at my not-so-golden wristwatch between seconds.
She walked out of the kitchen "thank you, dear" she collected it.
"And where are you going?"
"Uhmm..." I thought of a lie, very silly lie, they always help.
"Uhmm, what?"
"We've got extra lessons"
"And you're dressed like this?"
"I don't get you"
"Don't you think you should look more formal?"
How informal do I look? I wore a black skinny jeans, white long sleeved top and my favorite white slip-ons with Alexis written in black bold letters on it.
"I have to be on my best" I faked a smile " to do my best" I added.
Now I get how one lie leads to another.
"Bye mum" I raced out, pretending not to hear her call me.
.................................................................................."I've been waiting for hours now" I stated, after he came.
"I'm very sorry" he sat opposite me, outside the chocolate bar "by the way, you look adorable" he placed his elbow on the round table, cupping his cheek.
I blushed "thank...you"
"So..."
"Please, I need your face cap, fast"
"Why?"
"Please hurry"
He gave it to me with that confused look written on his face and I put it on, letting out a sigh of relief.
"What?"
"Nothing serious"
It was actually something serious. I had seen Jayden walk into the bar with his little sister, I guess. I didn't want him to see me. With Dexter. That's the worst thing that can ever happen.
And I didn't want Dexter to see him too.
"Let me go get some chocolates"
"No, it's not necessary"
"I insist" he walked away.
I drummed my finger on the table, fixing my gaze on the entrance.
Something fell on my slip-ons and I turned, looking down. I came face-to-face with the little girl I had seen with Jayden. This is not happening, someone should pinch me to wake up.
She put her fingers in her mouth, smiling. I shook my head, still staring at her.
"You won't even say sorry?" that was obviously Jayden. He crouched to pick the chocolate on my slip-ons with a tissue and sprayed something-I-don't-know on it, it sparkled again. I bit my lip hard, almost causing it to bleed. I prayed he wouldn't notice me as I shut my eyes tight.
"Alexis?" I heard him say. At first, I wondered if it was really him because this is the first time he's calling me by my name. I opened my eyes, slowly.
"Jay" I whispered.
"What are you doing here?"
"Having a quiet time? Alone?" I lied. This isn't getting any better.
"Then we could join you"
"No, thanks"
"I can't see you alone and leave you alone" he sat on the chair which Dexter stood up from.
"She's beautiful" I stroked the little girl's cheek "is she your sister?" I added.
"Yes. Eleanor"
"That's a nice name"
He smiled "she's a real trouble"
"I know right? Children are always like that" he carried her up to sit on his lap and she played with the locket that hung around his neck.
"Really?"
"Yah. And I love them"
"Wow, I don't really do"
"Are you serious?"
"Kidding" he chuckled, holding her hand. She pulled him closer so she could whisper into his ear.
"What?" He tried to hear her.
She couldn't whisper though, I could still hear what she said.
"Ah won pidsa" she whispered, loud enough for me to hear.
"Wait a little, okay?"
She nodded, bouncing on his lap.
Just then, Dexter burst in. I swear I had forgotten he ever existed.
"Seriously?" He shook his head, throwing the chocolates on the table and walking out.
I wanted to call him back but I had to choose one. Jayden or him? Obviously, it's Jayden but I looked worried now, almost taking a step forward but Jayden pulled me back.
"All he needs is to calm down. Then you'd apologize later"
"O...okay"
"Let's go to 'royal fries'? Eleanor wants pizza and I don't wanna go without you or else you'd keep this worried look on your face.
I faked a smile " can I hold Eleanor?"
"Of course, you can"
He dropped her and I held her "how are you?" I smiled at her.
She nodded.
