Chapter 26 - Lee

Xunyi called Susie for help as she wanted Deming to rest a bit more. She left a post-it note to him before she left his house. Susie agreed to meet up with Xunyi after she finished with her hospital visit. Ever since she was diagnosed with a rare disease, she was an optimist. Susie smiled as she met up with Xunyi. They met at a cafe near the Shanghai Pearl Tower. Xunyi hugged Susie since she hadn't seen her for such a long time.

As they discussed the case, Susie called one of her best friends, Lee, who was a private investigator. Lee was another accomplished, handsome young man whom Xunyi was surprised to learn about. He had a lot of previous experiences in complicated cases.

"Were you always a private investigator?" Xunyi was curious, so she asked.

"No. I used to be an officer, just like Susie. But then some personal things happened so I became a private investigator." He replied, "How about you?" Lee looked at Xunyi and he was attracted to her. Xunyi awkwardly smiled and then fixed her hair, "I'm a law intern. I'm working under Lawyer Jiang." Lee nodded.

"You're also quite accomplished, Xunyi. I heard Lawyer Jiang Deming is a highly-respected lawyer and being his intern is not an easy feat. I'm surprised." Lee replied and smiled at her.

"Thank you, I'm not as accomplished as some of my other peers." Xunyi humbly replied.

"Everyone has different path. It's useless to compare yourself to others." He replied and then looked over their files and notes. He drank his coffee so fast while Xunyi didn't even take a sip. She didn't want to burn her tongue.

After a while, Lee went over on some of the stuff then stated his opinion.

"This is a highly complicated case. If we don't have enough evidence, we cannot win against Jiang Mengshan. The files that you showed me, only some of the information were useful. We need more. I would suggest you guys find more evidence about the accident. This recording is very important but we need more. I can help you guys by tracking down Mengshan's people. I've seen them before I became a private investigator. And I have my guys to help me as well."

Xunyi didn't expect Lee to know so much. She was surprised by the amount of information he knew. She sighed, I need to work harder. Xunyi always knew that there will always be people smarter than her. Lee finished typing on his laptop and sent each one of them a copy of the stuff they talked about this morning.

Lee looked at Xunyi and he was curious about her.

"Miss. Xunyi, here's my contact information whenever you need me. Do you have yours?" He asked after he gave his business card to her.

"I actually don't have a business card. But you can always find me at J&J Law Groups." Xunyi didn't wish to get closer to Lee since she already have Deming in her heart.

"Miss. Xunyi, don't worry. I won't hurt you. I only wanted to get to know you better." Lee smiled and got up, "I got to go now. My sister is waiting for me. See you soon!" He exited the cafe then met up with his older sister, Kris. Susie looked at Xunyi and said, "Looks like someone is attracted to you." She winked at her and Xunyi focused on drinking her coffee which was still warm. Xunyi sighed and took a deep breath.

"Susie, you know I love Deming. Did you do this on purpose?" Xunyi asked her and Susie shook her head first but then nodded, "He's great at investigation. He can find more information than the two of us combined. That's why I asked him for help."

"That's all?" Xunyi asked and Susie nodded, "He's not a scam."

"Oh... then that's good. I thought you wanted us to be together." Xunyi was relieved but then Susie replied, "But I was honest, he does like you. You cannot deny that. I mean... who doesn't love a beautiful woman like you?" Susie complimented Xunyi because she couldn't deny the fact that Xunyi was very attractive.

"Then, do you like me?" Xunyi asked Susie while she was drinking water. Susie almost spat out her water and looked at Xunyi, "Of course, I like you. Who doesn't? Be more confident!"

Xunyi scolded herself, what were you thinking about?

Xunyi and Susie went to the intersection where the accident between Deming's parents and the SUV occurred. Susie was able to spot two CCTV cameras near the area so they went to the nearest security office then asked them to show the video that occurred a bit more than three years ago. After showing her ID, Susie followed the security guard while Xunyi trailed behind.

"This is what occurred on that day. I wasn't on duty at that time so I'm not sure if the video is original or it's being altered by someone. These days, I heard deep-fakes are popular." The security shook his head then letting them continue on watching.

"Wait! Go back a bit. Yes. Stop!" Susie compared the CCTV camera to the video recording given by Mr. Huo.

"The SUV are the same, I got the plate number as well." Susie told Xunyi who immediately wrote it down in her notebook. Then, they received a call from Lee.

"The plate number is a fake. It's not even registered." Lee said, "I bet there are more out there. I'll look into it more. Susie, Xunyi... if you guys are still okay with it, I got into contact with the hospital. And they said the bodies of the victims were not burned. They are still in the morgue awaiting confirmation. Apparently, this hospital has a protocol that unless the bodies had been confirmed... they will take it away otherwise they will leave it until there is confirmation."

Xunyi suddenly felt weak in her knees and nearly passed out, Susie got her and told her to breathe.

"Xunyi, if you're not okay with it. I can go alone." Susie tried to comfort Xunyi by letting her rest outside.

"No, I need to let Deming know. All he knew was that his parents got struck, he didn't even have a proper burial for them. At least I know where my parents are buried, but he don't. I'll let him know when I go back home." Xunyi was shocked and grateful at the same time. She didn't know what to say.

"Lee, thank you so much for your help. I don't know how to thank you." Xunyi was almost in tears. Lee smiled on the other end, "Treat me for a meal next time."

"Definitely. Thanks!" Xunyi replied and hugged Susie.

"Thanks, Susie. You're always a big help to me ever since we were in London." Xunyi was crying with happiness, "You're like my older sister even though we're not blood related. Thank you nevertheless."

Susie closed her eyes and smiled, "You're my younger sister, then." She was glad to meet Xunyi. Not because she was attractive but she adored her. Same with Li Xun, even though she fell in love with him, she wasn't able to love him because of her job nature. But with Xunyi, she's like her other half. Her soul mate, a person she wishes to be. Susie also teared up because her time was short. She wanted to grasp every opportunity to be with the people she loved.
